Windows NT/XP/7/8 had the POSIX subsystem and then the Interix subsystem: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interix But they deprecated it in Windows 8 and don't support it at all on Windows 10. As one of my co-workers pointed out... the MS file model is fundamentally incompatible with the linux model. Try renaming a file in windows that someone else has open... try deleting a file someone has open. There are lots and lots of linux programs that do that last trick... create a temp file, open it and then delete it... use it for scratch space and then when they close it... *poof* it's gone. Interesting but I don't see much point. Yes it may be technically interesting but from an end user perspective why use this over cygwin. I imagine any graphical application won't work. If they did make it support SDL, gtk, etc., I'd be interested. Granted on a new machine I might install it instead of cygwin if it was easier to install. LOPSA-East '16 Early Bird Registration extended

by LOPSA-East '16

The “*please fasten you seatbelt sign*” is on and LOPSA-NJ is happy to announce that registration for the 2016 LOPSA-East conference is *OPEN*. Early Bird pricing is a great deal and will be available till March 25th. We have some great classes and talks this year and we hope you all can join us. There are many discounts that you can find out about at http://lopsaeast.org/2016/lopsa-east-costs/#dis Our Friday night Keynote will be Tanya Reilly who has been a Site Reliability Engineer at Google since 2005, working on low level infrastructure like distributed locking, load balancing, bootstrapping and monitoring systems. Before Google, she worked as a Systems Administrator at eircom.net, Ireland’s largest ISP, and before that she was the entire IT Department for a small software house. She likes writing Go, building Lego spaceships, and predicting how things will break.” “Does technical debt turn your small changes into minefields? Does your production environment expect perfect humans? This talk highlights tools, configuration and documentation that set us up for failure. It advocates for removing traps, so that you don’t have to waste brain cycles on remembering where they are. And it offers practical advice for sending your future self (and future coworkers!) gifts, instead of post mortems that just say “human error :-(”. Includes stories of preventable outages. Bring your schadenfreude.” We will be announcing some new great things going on later as the conference gets closer. One of the things that was brought up in the feed back from the past few years is a get together on Thursday night for those in the area or arriving early so we will be opening up the bag stuffing party to all. More details on this will be added to the website as the time gets closer. Friday night we will have the Birds-Of-a-Feathers again this year as well as a Cards Against Humanity game for anyone who wants to join and a few more fun things that make LOPSA-East different from other area conferences. We can’t wait to see you all in May at the LOPSA-East Conference. Remember to reserve your room at the Hyatt Regency New Brunswick at the group rate of $129 single/double plus tax. When the rooms in the LOPSA-East block are sold out, requests will be handled on a space-available basis at the hotel’s standard rate. Make your reservations early! Finally. Success. It wasn't pretty and maybe I'm vulnerable to some particular types of threats but at least I have Windows and Linux installed and available. :-\ In order to get the installer to see the Windows partition I had to open a terminal and run gdisk to remove the GPT record from the disk and tell it to use MBR. I'm having an issue with the grub menu hanging when I toggle down. If I go very slow it doesn't hang. Hmmmm. On 03/25/2016 10:33 AM, Gary Hanley wrote: > Yeah, I should know better. Re: [Wlug] UEFI Blues

by Gary Hanley

Yeah, I should know better. I was beat up and frustrated at the time. Sorry. The root of my problem was that I couldn't find any options in the BIOS to manipulate the Secure Boot/UEFI/Legacy stuff. However, I found them this morning after I selected an option that I assumed to be unrelated which unlocked them. Thank you, Gigabyte. So I'm making progress now but I'm still not out of the woods yet. I've got Windows installed with space partitioned for LM but now I'm working on getting the installer to recognize the Windows partition. It thinks I have the entire disk available. Damn. Keep digging.... Thanks for the BLOG link. Looks interesting. I'll check it out. You have turned off secure boot, right? Which OS is working right now? Can you run grub manually from the UEFI prompt? Can you get to the UEFI prompt? Are you trying to install Windows second after a successful Linux install? Have you considered picking one OS, then running the other in a virtual machine? You really really really need to give more details here, otherwise no one will be able to help you. For example, can you install and boot linux Mint by itself without any problems on this board? I assume you can do the same with Windows 10 as well, right? So did you install Win10 first, then shrink it and install the new bootloader to let you choose between Win10 and Mint? But it broke both I suspect. Gary> I'm finding lots of help pages but none have worked for Gary> me. Maybe because I have a newer MB (Gigabyte GA-Z170MX with an Gary> Intel I5 6400). I'd say it's possible, but you might need to tweak your UEFI BIOS to allow non-signed keys to boot. Have you looked at ...uum.... Mathew Wilcox? UEFI Blues

by Gary Hanley

I used to build PCs for myself, family and friends as a side hobby many moons back but as it became more of a headache I fell out of it for the most part. But recently I decided to replace the PC I have had since 2007 even though it was working fine for my needs. I really wanted an SSD drive, USB 3.0 and less power consumption. So all the headaches immediately returned and I remembered why I don't like to build these any more. I was able to get the hardware issues I encountered resolved, but them I was hit with the UEFI problem when trying to install and dual-boot Windows 10 and Linux Mint. I'm finding lots of help pages but none have worked for me. Maybe because I have a newer MB (Gigabyte GA-Z170MX with an Intel I5 6400). So I wonder without burdening anyone for specific instructions, can anyone provide any general thoughts or guidelines regarding UEFI, Windows 10 and Linux? I'm thinking it might be impossible to dual-boot with my setup but I hope not. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -- Gary

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking of. Thank you, Frank!
