Next meeting February 9th

by Tim Keller

Hey Gang, Our next meeting is the 9th! I've been doing some interesting work on the clustering filesystem GFS2 if people would be interested in that... iscsi/iser infiniband using a 100gb file in tmpfs on one machine as a filesystem device on three other machines. So, I can talk cogently about setting up icsi, setting up gfs2 and about tuning such a thing. I also wrote a filesystem testing tool called "death by infinite paper cuts" to iterat I've still got my git methodology slides if people are interested in that as well. I was given a kinect to play with. Though I've got two weeks I might be able to do something interesting with that! Lastly if anybody wants to present on something cool they're working on, let me know! Later, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

expanding Europe's Linux Presentation Day to the US

by Hauke Laging

Hello, in May 2015 Berlin's Linux user group (BeLUG) has started a new type of event which has spread quickly all over Europe: the Linux Presentation Day (LPD) 2015.1: Berlin only 2016.1 & 2016.2: 120+ cities in 15 countries 2017.1: first locations outside Europe (Canada, New Zealand, probably more) I contact you because we intend to expand the LPD beyond Europe next year. The aim of the LPD towards the general public is to provide biannual and comprehensive information events about Linux for private users who would like to get a first impression of Linux. The aim towards the media is to make the event so big (both nationally and internationally) that the nationwide non-IT media cover it regularly. The aim towards the Linux community is that an LPD event can be so small and easy to organize (even without costs) that really everyone can try to organize an event with good chances of success. The local organizers decide on their own what their event shall be like; we just make suggestions and offer support. You can find a longer description of the concept here: http://www.linux-presentation-day.org/idea/ Are you as an organization interested in participating in the LPD? If not: Are any of your members interested in helping us bring the LPD to the US? This event is very useful for finding new LUG members. Best regards, (Mr.) Hauke Laging -- http://www.linux-presentation-day.org/ International phone contact for the Linux Presentation Day: tel:+49-30-55579620 (13:00–23:00, German and English) XMPP (Chat with OTR): linux-presentation-day(a)jabber.ccc.de OTR: 91626899 1C06F2BD 75EC2441 35C696CE 38F75997

Meeting Dec 8th at 7pm: Topic: Personal RPZ

by Tim Keller

Hey Gang, Long time member Eric Martin has graciously stepped up to do another talk. This time it'll be about setting up a personal RPZ server. We all know we'll be setting lots of new devices up in the coming month... RPZ is basically a "spam" filter for your DNS. It works to keep your devices from gong to sites infected with malware and "jam the lock" of any existing mailware from getting back to it's command and control. Eric will give an overview and explain a quick and dirty on how to set one up. Time: 7pm Location: Campus Center Rm 301 (Haggland Rm. It's on the same floor as the Mid Century room we're normally in, only at the top of the stairs take a right instead of a left. We're still waiting for confirmation After that we'll head down to Tech Pizza. As usual snacks and refreshments will be provided. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

I'd be willing to give a talk on Linux virtualization beyond Virtualbox if anyone's interested. I've been running a CentOS-based virtualization server for a while now, so I could talk a bit about that. -Logan On Tue, Nov 22, 2016 at 8:10 PM, John Stoffel <john(a)stoffel.org> wrote: > > Ansible/chef/puppet/salt would be all good. > > Eric> I like em all, I'm down for giving the RPZ talk whenever. > Eric> On Tue, Nov 22, 2016 at 5:30 PM Tim Keller <turbofx(a)gmail.com> > wrote: > > Eric> Hey Gang, > > Eric> After last meeting, we were sitting around and started > brainstorming some > Eric> ideas for upcoming > Eric> meetings. > > Eric> Here were some of the ideas that came up... > > Eric> - 2 factor authentication > Eric> - Full disk encryption or partition encryption with luks + ubee > token > Eric> - Personal rpz > Eric> - Home automation with Raspberry pi > Eric> - Ansible and/or other automation / configuration tools > Eric> - git methodologies, i.e. now that you've got git, how to use it > Eric> effectively > Eric> - Modern Linux kernel compiling for fun and performance! > > Eric> Suggestions? Topics for upcoming meetings!

by Tim Keller

Hey Gang, After last meeting, we were sitting around and started brainstorming some ideas for upcoming meetings. Here were some of the ideas that came up... - 2 factor authentication - Full disk encryption or partition encryption with luks + ubee token - Personal rpz - Home automation with Raspberry pi - Ansible and/or other automation / configuration tools - git methodologies, i.e. now that you've got git, how to use it effectively - Modern Linux kernel compiling for fun and performance! Suggestions? Let me know! Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".
