Great meeting last night!

Hey Everybody, Last night's meeting was fantastic! It's always great to get a full house! For those of you who were unable to make it, there were a number of fantastic mini talks. Login gave a great 15 minute rundown regarding the "audit2allow" tool to generate selinux rules. Login then proceeded to show how SElinux is running in lots of places... and then SSH'd into his phone to show that it was also run SElinux. kudos on the sshing over bluetooth from your laptop... that was cool. Greg then gave a great demo on a very lightweight security oriented linux called "Heads" (as opposed to the more well known "Tails" distribution. What was more amazing was that he was running it on a pretty old laptop and it was zippy... Though their support for mirroring displays could be a bit clearer! It was really impressive what you can do with a two core pentium laptop and a usb stick! Lastly, Chuck showed off Qubes. While the install didn't finish until we'd come back from dinner! Chuck was able to talk about the idea of separating applications into different Xen domains. It was really cool. Though we talked about this at and after dinner... I'm fearful that Xen is going the way of the dodo... I wonder if in the future the Qubes people will support other hypervisors. Thank to Login, Greg and Chuck for presenting and thanks to everybody for turning it into a lively and interesting round table discussion. I can try to get Qubes working again on my laptop. I kinda doubt it would work as a VM since it is based on Xen VMs itself. I was starting to plan to bring my tower with Kali and was wondering if a monitor would be available, but then i remembered I'd have to haul it up from the parking area. John, If I remember correctly, the equivalent of "assembly language" for the 1401 (either the IBM model or the IMB model) was "Autocoder". The IBM 1401 was introduced about 1961. By the time I started work at Aetna Life and Casualty in 1973, we had become the "Largest commercial user of IBM Equipment in the Free World". That means that maybe the government used more IBM computers, or that the Russians or the Chinese were using more IBM computers, but other than that AETNA WAS THE LARGEST. We AUTOMATICALLY ordered two of anything IBM announced. No sales person had to call us. IBM announced it: Aetna ordered two. So by that time we had lots of IBM 1401s and lots of Autocoder programmers. Then the IBM 360 line came out, and with it IBM's line of batch operating systems: MFT, MVT, VS-1, VS-2, and (finally) MVS. Next WLUG meeting! April 12th, 2018! Location: WPI Student Center, Rm 331. Topic: Secure Linux Distributions

Hey Gang, Our next meeting is April 12th, 2018! Would people be interested in talking about security oriented versions of Linux? We all know about Tails, and in consideration of the issues that Richard ran into with getting stuff installed on Kali, it might be interesting to compare / contrast the different options out there. What do people think? I'm thinking this would work best as having a couple of people each showing off a particular distribution. Just plan to test enough that I feel confident it is doable before asking them. Yesterday I took pictures of Skylanders to see at what scale they still look good. At 64 pixels wide they are a little grainy. 128 pixels wide looks pretty good. Skylanders apparently has catch phrases for characters so I would like to get each kid to record a catch phrase for their character.

RFID reader/writer

Does anyone have a recommendation for a RFID reader/writer for Linux (and Windows if possible)? I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive solution. My kids just got Skylanders Imaginators. I found some code to read the characters. I started thinking about the Game Design merit badge for Cub Scout Webelos. I'm wondering about the viability of building a "portal" device and having the kids make clay figures with rfids inside the base. Obviously the game would be as complex as Skylanders. I'm thinking 2D using pictures of the models.

I'm pretty sure it does manage to open the framebuffer; I get the mouse cursor at what looks to be the monitor's native resolution. It probably throws that error before it tries a different method, but obviously I don't know.
