Clueless about flight simulators! Can't even (barely) find and work controls on .....wow, google-earth-pro (free) with an obscure flight simulator you can get+run on linux! The fuzziness disappears or changes, if you enter Flight Simulator from here. ==== PULL DOWN MENU for "Tools" has "Enter Flight Simulator". Choose the slower plane, not the F-16 jet if you suck like I do. The mouse now flies the plane. I want to skim over my hood. I use my four arrow keys , mouse-moves work too but I flip out. I know I'm missing some kind of flight/plane control, should RTFM if there is one. I thought Flaps controlled pitch/up/down, but my Flaps stay at 40% and I crash in hilarious various mistakes every minute or so. What fun! Resume Flight brings all control back so off you go to die again....

THANKS Moderator(s)). 2 new semi-concise/stage1 questions for OP/Ron: Q1: How old is computer, do you do backups, is your HardDisk still oldschool spinning platters? (if you still use an old(er) HD, I'd rethink the concept of nightly shutdown. Platter shaft grease gets old/hard -> sticky/striction HD ...may decide not to spin up someday. But a tiny hammer on the HD during powerup could revive...I'll never forget the day TWO of my NetApp HD's on a raid5 (ONE dead disk allowed to rebuild itself, not raid6 which can survive 2 dead disks. My server room had been powered off all night due to a bldg planned night of shutdown! And the backup robot my CA boss sent me, was failing to do sane backups for my MAss/work servers for past weeks on that NetApp. A revisit to server room with sm hammer, a few taps, got one stuck HD to spin, NetApp rebuilt the raid5 ! ) Q2: if "losing my personal files" is the biggest worry (shouldn't it be?), do you have your personal data on a 2nd disk of any speed, to augment an SSD for the OS ? Secondary worries of course include nuisance of having to reload OS+me if the Update Manager makes a giant mess, which (apparently never happens) || (...not to me, ever) long as linux auto-updates have existed in/on my dwindling beasts/zoo. OS magic/behind-scenes: I do believe on instinct that the Update temporary files are stashed to LOCAL HD so you can even do your finish-update bootUP with No Freaking Network up. Hope my aging gut remains right on that.

Reboot required questions

I usually run any updates on my Linux machine after I'm done using the machine for the day. Sometimes the update the system says "reboot required" At that point I close the active window. Hit restart, let the machine start up, reboot, and then I sign in again before shutting down for the night. My question is: can I instead just shut down and wait until the next day to start up the computer? (I've read on line that I need a "proper" shut down. With all the text flashing at hyper speed I wonder if I do shut down or even start up properly) Ron

pinning Icons in Gnome

I am using Ubuntu 24.0.X, which uses Gnome by default. Whenever I pin a .desktop icon to the dashboard, it is no longer visible when I browse through the apps. Is there a way to have an icon "pinned" to the dashboard and be visible in "show apps"? (the bottom left icon with three dots and three arcs in a circle that shows the available apps) My workaround for this is to copy the .desktop file to the desktop folder for items that I want conveniently available. Obviously, this is not the ideal.

I had one a while while back and I kept an old Dell laptop (Windows USB1?) just for charging - sadly one of the kids thought it was waterproof so I no longer have it. Hope that helps. Circuit sounds very wonky. Hard power reset may get it back fully. They say 20 plus seconds of power button hold. Then release power button. Then hopefully power on normal. The following is based some very old memories of reading some articles about the charging profiles of lithium ion batteries. I expect that there are inaccuracies in my memory. Assuming that this has a lithium ion battery and this was the result of over discharging the battery, it is possible that the battery voltage is below the minimum voltage for the charging circuitry inside theSan Disk Clip. This behavior is an intentional behavior of chargers for safety reasons. If you insist on taking the risk of bypassing this safety feature, it is your risk. The unit has to be under charge for a l-o-n-g time, relying on internal leakage current to s-l-o-w-l-y charge the battery to above the minimum voltage to actually charge the battery. Several hours may not enough time to do this. I would consider "charging" this unit for several days to be sure that the unit will not take a charge. Joel/Robert/All: Thank you for the speedy replies. I am guessing that the unit is about 12 years old. I forget when I purchased it but only powered it up once or twice when I got it and it's been since sitting silently in a drawer. I am trying a different charger (just now) and will let that sit for a couple hours in case the charger was the issue. I looked on line regarding the battery replacement and it does not sound like it would be worth the effort and cost. Hopefully I the alternate charger fixes the issue. If it's the battery, I will likely move on. My intent is to use it to listen to podcasts in my car. I was previously using a 2nd generation ipod nano, but my one Windows PC that had itunes developed issues and I no longer have it. My son has used and abused one of those for around 10 years. Was a cheap way for 2rd grader to listen to music on school bus. His still works and charges every few years when he takes it out. Admittedly its use was daily until momentus day at 13 he became a teenage android cell user. Enough of my teary eyed reminicing... Back to your concern. The tiny battery on it and its battery charging circuit is internal. If it was mine I would try the following: 1) try the reset device, details belowm 2) try many USP outputs: wall charging blocks, laptop port, desktop port . 3) try many usb charging cords that fit its input port. 4) do you need this specific device (music on it, etc)? If yes consider troubleshooting internals to device. One ebay vendor sells internal batteries If no, consider another music solution The sanfisk forum page below explains how to reset device as well. Hold power button down for 15+ seconds resets. Release button. Can it charge and play at the same time? If so a battery bank might be a hacky solution. If you’re looking to fix it; I’d recommend ifixit.com. Those are my two “easy” fix solutions. SanDisk Clip Sport Question

Would anyone be knowledgeable? I have an old 8 GB SanDisk Clip Sport that I am trying to resurrect if it can be done easily. Yesterday I left it connected to my Linux Computer USB for two hours. The screen read "Low Battery" This morning, I plugged it into a house charger and left it charging for nearly three hours. The same "Low Battery' Screen appeared. If I hit the power button the MUSIC screen appears. I had music on there from tinkering years back. The unit seems to operate fine (I plugging in earplugs and listened to music) while charging, but as soon as I disconnect the charge wire no matter what the screen view, it all goes dark. On line searches have not been helpful. Any thoughts? ...fyi leaving it even longer on the charger just in case Ron

In addition to that I've been experimenting with restic. Restic is a backup system that can make use of S3/MinIO storage to create efficient backups. Remember, there are two types of people in the world.. Those who have backups and those who *wish they had!* To dovetail with this is another topic that people might find interesting, that is TrueNAS Scale. I've been using it in production and for personal fun as well. Its App stack is pretty slick for people who want to start self hosting.
