Setting up new monitor

by Richard Klein

I picked up a free monitor today, a Samsung S24C230L. The native resolution is 1920x1080, and it's connected via DVI. The existing monitor has a native resolution of 1680x1050 and is plugged into the analog VGA port. The NVIDIA X Server Settings seem to agree, so what's up with the display on the second monitor? https://photos.app.goo.gl/M1R9MQnDMCaD7qca6 When I try saving the X Configuration File, it warns me that I should use relative positioning for the second display, instead of absolute positioning. Maybe that's the problem, but I can't find that setting anywhere. Got any ideas? -- Rich

Re: PCSX2

by Dennis Payne

I started to wonder if maybe I'm not thinking about this with a eye to the future. Maintaining this will be difficult. I decided to take a look on flathub.org. It does have a flatpak for pcsx2. https://flathub.org/apps/details/net.pcsx2.PCSX2 It is listed as 1.5.0-dev. The playstation 2 bios files needed to moved to a different location. It runs about the same as the regular version. Steambot Chronicles doesn't run at full speed on my computer (about ~50% PS2 speed). The flatpak version may have been a percent or two behind but hard to say for certain. I did have problems installing it. Following the instructions on the site didn't work. The repository is added in my Gnome Software but clicking on install gave an error "Failed to install file: not supported". Not sure why that is. I ended up using the command line. flatpak install flathub net.pcsx2.PCSX2 On Sat, 2019-05-18 at 14:35 -0400, Dennis Payne via WLUG wrote: > Before the meeting on games, I tested pcsx2 thinking maybe I could > show it. PCSX2

by Dennis Payne

Before the meeting on games, I tested pcsx2 thinking maybe I could show it. However, it was removed from rpmfusion in Fedora 30. PCSX2 is playstation 2 emulator. I have a working PS2 but the He-Man game was only released in Europe and it is region locked. The emulator finally allowed me to try the game. Since I didn't like losing that ability I've rebuilt the pcsx2 package for Fedora 30. http://identicalsoftware.com/dulsi/lzma-libs-4.32.7-21.fc30.i686.rpm http://identicalsoftware.com/dulsi/pcsx2-1.4-11.fc30.i686.rpm The src rpms are exactly the same as the files from fedora and rpmfusion. I cheated a bit in compiling the pcsx2 package. It had some errors with system headers files. Rather than create a patch to make it compile, I hacked the system header files. (It was a throw away VM because pcsx2 can't compile in 64 bit.) Feel free to grab it if you want to play PS2 games. -- Dennis Payne dulsi(a)identicalsoftware.com https://social.freegamedev.net/channel/dulsi

Re: struggling w/ reliable printers on CUPS in small office

by Bradley Noyes

I thought i’d respond to this thread to circle back on my solution, which mostly works. The progression of printer connections was the following, the last one is the one that worked. imacs ——> WiFi (dhcp) ——> HP Printer imacs ——> ethernet (dhcp) ——> HP Printer imacs ——> ethernet (static IP) ——> HP Printer imacs ——> ethernet ——> Linux Cups Server ——> ethernet ——> HP Printer imacs ——> ethernet ——> Linux Cups Server ——> USB (over rj45) ——> HP Printer imacs ——> ethernat ——> Linux Cups Server on Raspberry PI ——> USB ——> HP Printer As mentioned by contributors to this thread, the network stack on the HP Printers seem to be flaky, so any attempt that involved the HP Printer’s network stack would fail at some point. Its strange that all of the HP Printers in the office seem to be affected by this. Everything i tired that involved a network link to the HP Printers was very flaky. My second-to-last ditch effort was to try using USB over ethernet; since the printers and the Linux Cups Server are not physically close and i have network drops next to each, i tried the USB over ethernet dongles, which didn’t take. The devies were recognized, but i couldn’t print over the USB device. There were some postings online about setting some serial parameters, but i didn’t want to mess around with it too much. So my final solution was to use an old Raspberry Pi i had kicking around which can be placed next to the printers and connect via USB, and it can also be connected to the office network via ethernet. This has been rock solid and clears my desk of an old r-Pi. In the end i can’t really come to a conclusion other that the HP Printer’s TCP stack is flaky. The rest of the network seems to be fine, i’ve never seen any troubles with anything else on the network. I’d occasional see the printer’s settings claim it is on-line, but have no IP address, which was always suspect to me. the printers operate reliably if using USB. Anyway, just wanted to let y’all know that a raspberry-pi running CUPS was the best solution, and thank you for responding.
