I updated my fstab and rebooted, and I think it's working as it should (it's still scanning the libraries). I lost the metadata that keeps track of what I've watched, but that's not a big deal. Updated fstab attached for comparison. Re: Plex media drive mount point

by Bill Minckler

ok, so no snap. a quick internet search of "/run/media/<user>" seems to point to a new automount location maybe. my ubuntu machine doesn't do this yet. That would probably happen when you log in, so if you want plex to run without you logging in, you would need to manually add it to fstab and put it somewhere else. On the permissions issue, it is possible that the user id of the plex user changed so it no longer has access (depends on who owned the directory structure in the last environment) Once you get the new location for the media drive, I would just chown or chmod everything that you want plex to have access to (but that's just me). Once you have it mounted, you could check the owner, group and permissions of a directory (not where the drive is mounted, use some subdirectory) with "ls -l", and we can look at those. Sorry if I intruded on anyone, I've been following the list, but the plex question struck a chord with me, I had this problem with a snap install before (and not realizing I was using a snap). I installed Plex from AUR (I think that stands for Arch User Repository). This is the first time I've used an Arch-based distro. The ps output is attached, anyway. I bet mailman strips attachments. If Plex is installed as a snap, it can only see things in “/media”. I don’t know the district you are using so I don’t know how to check the package that is installed. Try “ps -ef | grep -i plex” (sorry if that command is odd or has odd flags). If it shows plex has snap in the name is an easy way to check. Re: Plex media drive mount point

My guess is that it's sdb instead of sdb1 simply because there's only a single partition on the drive, but that's just a guess. Using the UUID seems safer, in any case. You're right, it's not in my home directory, per se, but it seems to effectively be another home directory; I'm the owner, and plex doesn't have the permissions it needs. I *can* rename, move, delete, and otherwise manipulate the files in there, but plex can't see them. Re: Plex media drive mount point

by Andrew Oprea

Ok, I'm with you that Plex can't read the directory structure, but I don't think that drive is mounted in your home directory. Your home directory is /home/richspk right? The machine is mounting that drive at /run/media/richspk/Media I'm guessing that mount point is owned by your user, rather than root, or a group that Plex is part of. If you'd like to try mounting it back to /Media you'll need to make that directory with: # cd / # mkdir Media and then add a line to fstab to mount the device there: (here's my shot at it, no promises i get it right right first try) sdb /Media auto defaults This line makes me vaguely uncomfortable because I'm expecting the partition 'sdb1' rather than the drive 'sdb', but sdb is what it shows in your current devices. If it fails to mount, try: sdb1 /Media auto defaults or: UUID=946b363e-ec7e-49d1-a5f2-f06caf8e4e21 /Media auto defaults - Drew On Sat, Nov 30, 2019 at 11:09 PM Richard Klein via WLUG <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> wrote: > > It's a permissions issue; Plex doesn't have permission to read stuff in my home directory. It's a permissions issue; Plex doesn't have permission to read stuff in my home directory. Thus, I think I need to re-mount it outside of my home directory, but I'm not sure on the best way to do that. Re: Plex media drive mount point

by Andrew Oprea

I doubt that Plex has some limitation related to browsing 5 directories deep. I'm curious what file system you've used on that 2.7T drive. I know I've written things to ext3 and ext4 drives, reinstalled a linux distro with my usual usernames (but randomly generated UID!) and been unable to browse my reused storage media. This isn't a issue with a VFAT drive, because those files don't have an owner. See if your user account can browse that directory structure? Maybe you will have to chown all the folders and files on that drive. Does Plex run as its own UID, or does it use your usual user one? (This question implies Plex is a server running on this machine, is that the case, or are you using the Plex app on another device?) Maybe you will have to add the Plex user to a group that has access to that drive (or to hot mountable drives generally)? - Drew On Sat, Nov 30, 2019 at 10:51 PM Richard Klein via WLUG <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> wrote: > > I blew away my Linux Mint installation today and installed Manjaro. Plex media drive mount point

by Richard Klein

I blew away my Linux Mint installation today and installed Manjaro. All my media for my Plex server was on a separate drive that was mounted at /Media. Now it's at /run/media/richspk/Media/, and Plex can't see anything below richspk. My /etc/fstab is much more spartan than I'd expected. sda is a Windows install, sdb is media, and sdc is the Manjaro install. Yes. If you want to test with a test router and test network, then you need to set up a test network and plug a test system into it. If you have this now: realsystem---[REAL-LAN switch]---[REAL-LAN-interface realrouter REAL-WAN-interface]---Internet REAL-LAN-interface is presumably 192.168.1.1/24. REAL-WAN-interface is whatever your ISP gave you. Then this could be your test network: testsystem---[TEST-LAN switch]---[TEST-LAN-interface testrouter TEST-WAN-interface]---[REAL-LAN-Switch] TEST-LAN switch could just be a (crossover) ethernet cable if you don't want more than one test system or don't have another switch. testrouter is your new Debian system. testsystem == 192.168.2.10/24, default gateway == 192.168.2.1 TEST-LAN-interface == 192.168.2.1/24 TEST-WAN-interface == 192.168.1.xxx/24 (a free IP on your real network), default gateway 192.168.1.1

Tim, I'm glad you feel that way about it! The /sysroot upgrading process is one of my favorite features about Silverblue, as you gain some of thebenefits of COW snapshots without relying on a particular filesystem(example: https://github.com/openSUSE/snapper) GRUB is also enhanced where instead of selectinga different kernel, you're booting into an entirely different /sysroot complete with kernel, libc, drivers, firmware, etc. all of which are tagged under one discrete OS version string. This design shouldmake bug fixing a lot easier as a user may only need to attach the OS version string when filing a bugreport, and a developer could boot up that particular version inside a VM. This update model should alsoeliminate variance between "not updated" and "fully updated" like we see with traditional packagemanagement where a package mirror might not have synced all of the latest packages. The rollback mechanism is also quite innovative, which Silverblue can get for free by designing updatesthat perform the equivalent of `git checkout ${BRANCH}`. I'm sure there will be much to discuss when we get to have a demo. -Josh On Mon, 2019-11-18 at 13:45 -0500, Tim Keller wrote: > Josh, > I think this would be an awesome talk. Re: Ideas for the next WLUG meeting

Josh, This is a great start for a talk, I really like your example of setting up duc, though you don't need to build the cache yourself with tcbmgr, duc should do that itself on startup. I may borrow your docs and testing things out and update the duc docs as well, since I think what you've done here is really neat. Looking forward to trying to make the next meeting, though December thru February will be tough for me due to other commitments. John

Josh, I think this would be an awesome talk. I'm particularly interested in the /sysroot upgrading process. I like the idea of having an immutable root that you can unwind things if they go horribly wrong. I'm game for having this as our Dec. topic! Thanks, Tim. Ideas for the next WLUG meeting

by Joshua Stone

Hey everyone, I'd just like to say I had a fun time at Thursday's meeting! I'm already looking forward to the next meeting as I'm sure there are plenty of interesting topics we could discuss. As mentioned before, I think we could examine technologies that'd be beneficial to Linux on the desktop, like comparing packaging technologies including Flatpak, Snap, and AppImage. I think we could also look into the future of containers on the desktop as a whole with projects like Flatpak, toolbox, podman, and Silverblue. My workflow over the past few years has been using these upcoming technologies as daily drivers as they lead to saner development. For example, my laptop runs Silverblue ( https://fedoramagazine.org/what-is-silverblue/) which is a Fedora variant designed around immutability where a new system image is committed as the new /sysroot without affecting the state of the running system. This is reminiscent of Android A/B updates, although the update backend -- ostree -- has elements of a version control system like git. Toolbox ( https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-silverblue/toolbox/) is also interesting as it lets you switch into an unprivileged development environment that can be built up and torn down without affecting the host as tools are installed inside a container. For example, I can build and install duc inside a toolbox without actually installing to the host /usr: [jstone@jstone-laptop ~]$ toolbox create --release 31 --container duc- test [jstone@jstone-laptop ~]$ toolbox enter --container duc-test ⬢[jstone@toolbox ~]$ git clone https://github.com/zevv/duc ⬢[jstone@toolbox ~]$ cd duc ⬢[jstone@toolbox duc]$ sudo dnf --assumeyes install gcc make autoconf automake pango-devel cairo-devel tokyocabinet-devel ncurses-devel ⬢[jstone@toolbox duc]$ autoreconf --install ⬢[jstone@toolbox duc]$ ./configure ⬢[jstone@toolbox duc]$ make ⬢[jstone@toolbox duc]$ sudo make install # no password needed ⬢[jstone@toolbox duc]$ mkdir ~/.cache/duc ⬢[jstone@toolbox duc]$ tcbmgr create ~/.cache/duc/duc.db ⬢[jstone@toolbox duc]$ duc index ~ ⬢[jstone@toolbox duc]$ duc gui Finally, I've been installing most of my apps as Flatpaks, which uses the same file storage backend as Silverblue to manage apps and shared runtimes. This app distribution technology allows you to decouple apps and operating systems as everything is built and run inside a sandbox, making upgrades easier. Compare needing only one version of an app to package as a flatpak, versus packaging for different versions of distros: https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.clementine_player.Clementine https://www.clementine-player.org/downloads I'd be glad to hear what everyone has to say! -Josh

Re: Reminder: Meeting today! Nov 14th, 2019

I'll be there tonight, and I can show off the boards I designed and had made with KiCAD too, if people are bored about ZFS. :-) Maybe in March I can give a talk on using KiCad and show over version 2 of my board design to address the mistakes I made first time around. John
