Next Month on the 2nd and 3rd Thursdays I have conflicts. So.. the next possible Thursday would be the 22nd.. Another option is that we shift the meeting to Wednesday for this month on the 14th? I know that isn't an "Free Hack" day at Technocopia, but I think we can work something out. What would people like to do? I mostly agree with Frank, especially for networks run by organizations whose primary business is not supplying network connectivity or public cloud computing to others. However, these days, IPv6 pretty much Just Works(tm), by default, out-of-the-box, on all general-purpose operating systems and you may not even realize you are using it. If you have Comcast Xfinity service and you are using their provided gateway router, then you are likely using IPv6. If you have Verizon Fios, same thing. If you have a cell phone, same thing. If you are using your own router and haven't configured it for IPv6, try OpenWRT with DHCPv6-PD. Go to https://whatismyip.com/ and look. On your cell phone, try with Wi-Fi turned off and then try again with it on. You can also try "ping google.com" (on Linux at least). If you are doing cloud computing, you can either pay for public IPv4 addresses, or you can get public IPv6 addresses for free. For special-purpose systems like IoT/smart home devices and such, they may still be playing catch up. Or they may not care much about implementing IPv6 because they run in a "closed" ecosystem where they control the only servers their devices talk to. But they might start caring now that cloud providers have started charging more for IPv4 addresses. But at this point it is more of a "who cares" situation for most people. The consumer shouldn't care. It makes good business sense to at least understand if you can gain a competitive advantage somehow by using IPv6, either by saving money, making a business model/product/service possible, or whatever. That's why the cell phone companies did it. Re: Reboot required questions

Doug, Sorry for the late reply. Been super busy. Answer to Q1: The laptop is from 2010. It's a Lenovo Think Pad T400. I use it more as a mobile machine. The little data that I want to keep is backed up. The hard drive is an old spinning platter. Answer to Q2: I had no worries of losing any data files. My only concern was that I did not know if a total shut down (as opposed to a reboot) would corrupt the OS and force me to reinstall it. Further trivia: As far as the machine is concerned, it still runs quite well. It's only quirk (that I may have mentioned some time back) is that the DVD drive pops open at random times. Gotta say those are really stupid names and already used by philosophers and OS developers for much more important things. No matter. You remind me that I had a web page that I had forgotten about that recounts my experience with IPv6. Bottom line tldr: It works. I'm not surprised that matter/threads doesn't. "Any sufficiently advanced technology is no more reliable than magic." Fortunately, I don't care. I believe IPv6 will never be universally used unless there's genuinely no choice for anyone. I'm not aware of any VNC client for KDE on Wayland, anyway (rather annoying that each compositor has to reimplement the same functionality).

Yeah! I'm still not convinced that wayland is better. I've got a number of apps that are just broken on wayland still. Tim. x11 on ubunt24

This might be old news, but Ubunt 24.0.X can still run X11 https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/how-to-switch-from-x11-to-wayland-on-live-ub… CodeLight is no longer seems to lock up and a Steam/wine game I play seems to start without errors. I have not spent much time testing this.

Clueless about flight simulators! Can't even (barely) find and work controls on .....wow, google-earth-pro (free) with an obscure flight simulator you can get+run on linux! I know I'm missing some kind of flight/plane control, should RTFM if there is one. I thought Flaps controlled pitch/up/down, but my Flaps stay at 40% and I crash in hilarious various mistakes every minute or so. What fun! Resume Flight brings all control back so off you go to die again....

THANKS Moderator(s)). 2 new semi-concise/stage1 questions for OP/Ron: Q1: How old is computer, do you do backups, is your HardDisk still oldschool spinning platters? (if you still use an old(er) HD, I'd rethink the concept of nightly shutdown. Platter shaft grease gets old/hard -> sticky/striction HD ...may decide not to spin up someday. But a tiny hammer on the HD during powerup could revive...I'll never forget the day TWO of my NetApp HD's on a raid5 (ONE dead disk allowed to rebuild itself, not raid6 which can survive 2 dead disks. My server room had been powered off all night due to a bldg planned night of shutdown! And the backup robot my CA boss sent me, was failing to do sane backups for my MAss/work servers for past weeks on that NetApp. A revisit to server room with sm hammer, a few taps, got one stuck HD to spin, NetApp rebuilt the raid5 ! ) Q2: if "losing my personal files" is the biggest worry (shouldn't it be?), do you have your personal data on a 2nd disk of any speed, to augment an SSD for the OS ? Secondary worries of course include nuisance of having to reload OS+me if the Update Manager makes a giant mess, which (apparently never happens) || (...not to me, ever) long as linux auto-updates have existed in/on my dwindling beasts/zoo. OS magic/behind-scenes: I do believe on instinct that the Update temporary files are stashed to LOCAL HD so you can even do your finish-update bootUP with No Freaking Network up. Hope my aging gut remains right on that.

Choice2, (via any method ...click,allow,bless your imminent death, via anything like GUI choice Quit->Shut Down which probably invokes something like "shutdown --?" couple flags like *-h* The same as *--poweroff*, but does not override the action to take if it is "halt". E.g. *shutdown --reboot -h *means "poweroff", but *shutdown --halt -h *means "halt". Oh, gory! Anyways, the answer seems (always?) dependent on time/patience. Pardon the tangent now, if you're here, I'm amazed: "poweroff" however that really works with "shutdown" or other trick, might vary....... motherboard/etc might get a signal and take a real nap.. If you have hard disks, not SD, beware a days-long sleep ...sticky platter shaft/bearing... (choice3) If I was feeing Totally Watchful, I'd reboot, watch...Log In, ...then Quit. Inevitably=-> "Log In", and boring.....see what Update Manager sees in its playpen. Debates,topics, questions could easily continue if interesting! ---the bottom line might be what's the processes(session, service?) of greatest interest for you on your (desktop)? I leave/let a 2010 Dell Opti w Mint 20.1 sleep on its own, SanDisk HD/root good since 2018/2019?. 500gb/disk1 (disk2 for "your data" helps for long life). Reboot required questions

I usually run any updates on my Linux machine after I'm done using the machine for the day. Sometimes the update the system says "reboot required" At that point I close the active window. Hit restart, let the machine start up, reboot, and then I sign in again before shutting down for the night. My question is: can I instead just shut down and wait until the next day to start up the computer? (I've read on line that I need a "proper" shut down. With all the text flashing at hyper speed I wonder if I do shut down or even start up properly) Ron

pinning Icons in Gnome

I am using Ubuntu 24.0.X, which uses Gnome by default. Whenever I pin a .desktop icon to the dashboard, it is no longer visible when I browse through the apps. Is there a way to have an icon "pinned" to the dashboard and be visible in "show apps"? (the bottom left icon with three dots and three arcs in a circle that shows the available apps) My workaround for this is to copy the .desktop file to the desktop folder for items that I want conveniently available. Obviously, this is not the ideal.
