Next meeting will be the 18th, not the 11th.

by Tim Keller

Hey Gang! I've got a conflict on the 11th, so I'm moving the meeting to the 18th. My plan is to talk about Tailscale / headscale and nebula to build secure networks that don't require punching holes in firewalls, etc. Let me know if you know of similar tech and I'll try to talk about that as well. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

If you're ever bored with using the Google recursors, give the Oracle recursors a try - 216.146.35.35 & 216.146.36.36 Source: I work on OCI's DNS service that maintains the recursors. ISPs figured out a long time ago they could harvest and sell your DNS query information. Sure because of https they can't see what your google queries are, but they can deduce the results.. Just looking at my PiHole logs is pretty enlightening.. It's clear I was just about to go on vacation in Maine, before that I was researching places in the Berkshires, before that I was on a whole bunch of EV review sites. That's just filtering for stuff from this machine and my phone. If I turn the filter off and see all the queries, you can quickly figure out there are people into Dr. Who, Star Trek, Anime. Using spotify and discord and facebook and instagram and tumblr and reddit. Things like DNS over HTTPS and DNSSEC help, but just to stop MITM stuff.. if the ISP is running the DNS server, they can see the queries.. Got my own router. SO I have just a 3rd party modem I own that’s not a spectrum device, just a docsis 3.1 device compatible with spectrum. But no I haven’t set any transparent/bridge settings. That’s actually a good idea to check. I always think of the modem as invisible infrastructure but worth a look. Thanks! Did you turn off any "security" features Spectrum has on the cable modem/gateway and put it into transparent bridging mode and use your own router? Privacy. I don’t want one org, source, company knowing EVERY DNS query I make from my house and therefor every company, site, organization, service,…,etc that I use. If I have a recursive DNS server that doesn’t go to one DNS forward like Spectrum, Google, Cloud flair, etc, server, but instead caches the root entries locally on initial startup for .com, .net, .bix, .org, etc, and then cache as I go the next level down, nobody ever when and what I query but once, and then that’s just the next level of the recurse, which is auto refreshed when the cache TTL runs out. Spectrum, Recursive dns and interception of root authoritative DNS

by steve＠patternsoft.net

Hey all. I was wondering since were all? Worcester or surrounding and dealing with Spectrum as an ISP, if you’ve run into the same thing I have in the last few months. I used to, as you’ll see soon, run unbound as a recursive DNS server in my home network to cache and limit external DNS queries that was the forwarder behind Pihole. It worked great for a very long time. But a few months ago, my internet went down, and It turned out to be non cached dns queries starting to fail. I realized in logs that unbound was getting errors reaching out to dns servers and disabled it until I could investigate instead forwarding to cloud flare temporarily. Now that I have had time to research and investigate, I have found that at least SOMETHING is intercepting my my queries to authoritative DNS servers when I reset unbound and it throw’s away the response because they aren’t “AA” status responses and it never caches the root dns and therefor won’t resolve anything. I come to find out the “authoritative” servers are responding with a status of RA which means it’s not the actual authoritative service when I query manually, dig @198.41.0.4 . NS +norecurse an actual authoritative, and that this is most likely a change Spectrum has made. Has anybody else ran into this? Is it actually Spectrum. I guess I haven’t dug far enough yet to see if its may be a firmware update to my router, UDM PRO yet. Still working on that, but though I’d ask this group first before I dig into that and save myself the time and go straight to ISP workarounds. Thanks in advance! Looking forward to our next meeting!! I have a similar system. With Raspberry Pi OS, I used their imager to put the OS on an SD card. Booted the Pi5 from that card and manually transferred the file systems to the NVMe drive. I used GPT and have lots of multiboot possibilities via an autoboot.txt file in the firmware filesystem... rob@d5:~ $ lsblk NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS nvme0n1 259:0 0 476.9G 0 disk ├─nvme0n1p1 259:1 0 1G 0 part /boot/firmware ├─nvme0n1p2 259:2 0 1G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p3 259:3 0 1G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p4 259:4 0 1G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p5 259:5 0 1G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p6 259:6 0 1G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p7 259:7 0 1G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p8 259:8 0 1G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p9 259:9 0 1G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p10 259:10 0 8G 0 part [SWAP] ├─nvme0n1p11 259:11 0 31G 0 part / ├─nvme0n1p12 259:12 0 31G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p13 259:13 0 31G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p14 259:14 0 31G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p15 259:15 0 31G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p16 259:16 0 31G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p17 259:17 0 31G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p18 259:18 0 31G 0 part ├─nvme0n1p19 259:19 0 31G 0 part └─nvme0n1p20 259:20 0 180.9G 0 part /Data -Bob Evans -----Original Message----- From: Worcester Linux Users' Group General Discussion <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> Sent: Jul 23, 2025 1:48 PM To: Worcester Linux Users' Group General Discussion <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> Cc: Tim Keller <turbofx(a)gmail.com>, Gregory Boyce <gregory.boyce(a)gmail.com> Subject: [WLUG] Re: m.2 for pi5! I recently got all the bits so that I can stick a 1TB nvme on my pi5! it almost makes it feel like a "real" server. I'll probably bring the whole contraption with me for the next wlug meeting! Oh and yes.. I'm using ZFS for the filesystem! Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Nothing maniacal about that in my book! On 7/16/25 10:31 AM, Tim Keller via WLUG wrote: > I'm a maniac that's compiling his own kernel.. so my machine gets > rebooted all the time.

I'm a maniac that's compiling his own kernel.. so my machine gets rebooted all the time.. generally I take updates, then build a kernel, install the kernel and then reboot. Re: Sorry about the A/V issues last night on Jitsi..

There have been many times when jitsi worked well and times when roughness was clearly because the microphone was too far from the person speaking and somebody in the next room was using a jack hammer. To aid debugging here is my report: When I first got into the meeting, I could neither hear nor speak. Somebody fixed something and I could hear the meeting, but still could not speak. This was definitely a problem on my end. I went a "settings" menu where you choose whether to use the built-in microphone or the one on the headset. I had already chosen (correctly) the headset, but this time I noticed a scroll bar on the side and when I scrolled down it revealed a volume control which was set to zero. When I set it to one I could be heard. For a while it all worked well. Kevin gave a Very Impressive demo. Then you decided to change things around. I think I heard someone say something like "you need to use the microphone that goes with that window". The sound cut off. I figured you were working on it, and said nothing. When Kevin resumed his demo I could not hear it. Several people complained via the text-based "chat". The little window with Kevin's pictrure had a "muted" icon (micrphone with slash thru). Nobody seemed to be watching the chat and it no longer worked when I tried shouting. I suspect that if anyone had noticed that Kevin had was muted and pressed the correct "unmute" button, all would have been good again. -- Keith
