Preliminary version of both are in the works, and I believe printing is in the latest build of OpenOffice, though I've never used it. Sun is supposed to be releasing StarOffice 6 sometime soon, which I would guess would include these extras and be somewhat based on OpenOffice, but I've only heard rumors back and forth to that end. Are you positive that the problem is memory and not CPU? Most decoding of audit and video is very cpu intensive. If the audio/video app gets swapped out (of the cpu), you can notice choppiness in quality. Hey, thanks alot all of you who went to http://orbitz.dyn.dhs.org/test.php. For those of you wondering why the heck I'd ask a such a thing, here is an explination. A friend of mine got a cool (but I'm assuming not very new idea) for passive OS detection through version strings on network software, in this case web browsers. What the php script does is log all of your version (User-Agent header) strings to a file, then by doing some greps and sort I create a wonderful list of all the strings. Then I use a perl script i made to convert the version strings to snort (www.snort.org) rule sets. So now when people visit http://orbitz.dyn.dhs.org/ and they are using a web browser in my data base, I can log what OS, web browser, and whatelse is in the header. So the bigger the database, the more people I can pick up. Its a pretty cool idea I think. There are other ways (probably simpler and more efficient) of doing this. Such as possible an apache mod. I do not know of any Linux player that handles WMP files. However, for RealMedia, you are in luck. I have a 486/66 with 16 MB of RAM acting as a firewall/gateway/ftp server/web server/account server/file server at home. Sure it doesn't have huge amounts of users, but everything it does it does it pretty fast. It just doesn't have X running. It has 2 network cards and it connects to my cable modem on one side and to my internal (home) network on the other. In addition, you don't want those PCs because of shipping is about the same as the costs. Kylix is their port of their development tools to linux! The initial version of kylix is just Borland Delphi, but the plan on releasing a C++ builder version eventually. For those of you who don't know what Delphi is, is a full RAD (like VB) but with a language that actually makes sense behind it (unlike VB). It's fully OO, and has tons and tons of developers behind it. http://www.borland.com/kylix The best part is, in the middle of this year they will be releasing a version for free (as in beer) for people to develop free (as in speach) applications with. (You still need to pay the $1000 to develop commercial apps) If you ask me, this is a good thing for linux. Currently we have no good development environments. Sure we have good compilers, and good debuggers, and good editors... but an entire environment is what lets developers focus on writing software and not fighting with the tools. In delphi I can write a full GUI app that does something nifty in Delphi in an afternoon. Using emacs, QT, and gcc... it takes me a couple days. Actually, I suspect setting up the system with SO5.2, with everything preloaded, would work as well as anything else, and would not be subject to corruption that Win95/98 has (i.e. user can't kill critical files, without root access). Also not subject to Windows Registry bit-rot. And not require licensing fees (remember, that Windows / Office is NOT free, and I always encourage paying of licensing fees, following of copyright, etc). Another item is that NH currently has a program that takes old computers, has the prisoners at Concord rebuild them into Linux servers, and donates them to charities for servers / workstations.
