Problems

I have Slackware 7.1 running on a an AMD 133Mhz box with 32Megs RAM. This is my webserver, shell server, Ip MASQ box, and it locks up alot. It seems to lock up when I'm downloading on a box in my network behind it. I am runnign Kernel 2.4.0 on an ADSL line. I have had this problem with all kernel compiles I have done. I used to run FreeBSD, then OpenBSD on this box with no trouble. I did not, however, have ADSL then, so those boxes were just using a dial-up. I think IP MASQ is lockign the box up at some point. There are no messages in /var/log/messages, it just stops cold. My PPPOE client, when running top, never appears to use more than 10% of my CPU. I do not think the problem is in the pppoe client because the box does not seem to lock up when I'm downloading on it. (as in ssh'ing in and using lynx). Does anyone have any ideas on this? Orbitz

Would anyone be interested in seeing a wireless network in place? I have an Apple Airport working great at home that I could sudo-demo at the meeting... I have the 3com AirConnect PC Card also working on my laptop, which shows how to setup a PC card network adapter under linux as well. The Airport is connected to an IDSL in my apt and pretty easy to configure.. They do have a WIN/MAC client to configure it (my laptop is win/linux dual boot), but I also believe that they have a JAVA client (=linux) but I have not tried using that one yet either. Its about a $400 solution (base and PC CARD - kinda pricey for most college bound) but wicked convient for the home laptop and multiple computers (i.e. laptops and work stations) The airport does takes the place of using a linux box as a router / gateway though :-) It does NAT and a DHCP server - wicked simple and reliable. Just shows another angle / solution. The adjtime file needs a rational setting, which it gets by noting the drift in hwclock time v. "real" time, which assumes that the real (system) time is accurate (nntp service?). This may help... 1. Get you system time set correctly. 2. run hwclock --systohc --utc (you determine if the --utc is right for you. 3. Wait a day or 2 while you system is still up. Don't reboot. 4. Check you system time & make sure it's right. 5. Do step #2 again. Any hwclock time drift will be reflected in the adjtime file. Bill

Oops; discard my previous message; I was not thinking at all or reading carefully... Could your time zone be set incorrectly? I use the SB4100 - it came with the service (Shrewsbury Town Cable) and the cost is, presumably, bundled with the monthly fee as there was no purchase option. Shrewsbury does swap Modems from time to time... If you bought the modem it was $195.00. If you take the buy option you can spread the modem payment out over three months. I took the buy option it will pay for itself in a year. John................... Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want, but the realization of how much you already have.

I am using charter as well. With the promotion of a free month of service if I bought the modem from them I paid $135 for my surfboard modem...so far no problem. The only complaint is that occasionally the mail servers go down. I also bought the Motorola modem directly from Charter. It was $200 and they'll split it into 4 payments tacked on to your bill. I let the installer set it up on my W2K box and, after he left, swapped the cat5 to my Linux box. I set it up for NAT and everything worked fine. I've since bought a Linksys router so I can tear apart my Linux box without disrupting internet access for the rest of my network. There's never been any problem with Charter, though the speed is nowhere near 1.5 Mbps.
