On a serious note, I don't suppose anyone knows Actually, the kernel team (linus in particular) has been screaming bloody murder that the distro's do this for at least two years now. If you're compiling user space, you're running against user space (glibc) so that's what you care about being compatible with, not the kernel. If you're compiling kernel mods, you should be compiling with -I/usr/src/linux-2.4/ (or wherever you keep your kernel source). -- Frank Sweetser rasmusin at wpi.edu, fs at suave.net | $ x 15 Full-time WPI Network Tech, Part time Linux/Perl guy | There are still some other things to do, so don't think if I didn't fix your favorite bug that your bug report is in the bit bucket. Nope, the new kernel will work with 64gb, you just have to go under "Processor type and features" and change the settings for High Memory Support. I thought about trying one a few times in the past twenty years, but it was always more trouble to install the debugger and figure out how it works than to just "fix the damn thing". Mostly I just use printf, writeln, jsr outstr, or whatever it's called, and think really hard. But then, I learned to program when it was done by turning in the card deck in the morning and then coming back just before midnight to see what it did. Re: Verizon DSL questions

by cc.noyes

LRP 3.1.0. You need to browse the various kernel images at www.linuxrouter.org to find the one that most closely matches your environment. You'll probably want an image that has a pppoe (if you're using Verizon DSL), ipchains, DHCP, caching DNS, etc. You can download it along with the modules for your ethernet cards. Since this is a router, you'll need at least 2 ethernet cards; one for the "WAN" side (DSL connection) and one for your local (LAN) network. I use my LRP box as a gateway/router and a firewall (running ipchains). My Verizon DSL "modem" is connected to the LRP box via one of the ethernet cards and the other ethernet card in the LRP box is connected to a hub in my house. All of the PCs in the house are also connected to the hub. I configured a private class C ethernet network in my house and all the PC's have a 192.168.x.y address, including the LAN interface of the LRP box. The WAN side gets it IP address from Verizon via DHCP. These addresses get "spoofed" via IPMASQ to the outside world. The whole set-up works great. You can get other modules to load from the floppy, but remember everything has to fit on a floppy. One neat trick is the ability to format a floppy to hold more than 1.4 MB. I don't recall if it's the fdformat command or something else (I'm sure someone on this list can supply the details.....it's been a while, and I don't remember), but you can format a floppy so it will hold 1.6 MB (maybe more) and Linux has no trouble booting from it. The neat thing is that you can use an old "clunker" PC that you may have lying around for the LRP box. You don't even need a hard drive, and it's recommended that you DON'T use a hard drive (secruity reasons...remember this box is exposed to the outside world). I don't even have a monitor or keyboard connected to the LRP box. It just runs and runs and runs.... Step through the LRP configuration, write-protect the floppy, and you're in business.... I hope this helps..... -Chuck Randall Hofland wrote: > That was more like a whole nickel. Which version of LRP? Re: [Wlug] Cable Modem Charter.net

by doug waud

> I was wondering if someone can help me > configure a cable modem to use in linux. I think the issue is configuring your computer. The cable modem is probably configured by the cable company (I bet they came in, ran Windows and got that working and then left. At that point the cable modem was "doing its thing" and you were left to fend for yourself on the linux side. That was my experience here in Shrewsbury. Incidentally, this is not all that unreasonable. After all they are a business and cannot afford to go far off the beaten path.) > I setup my ethernet card eth0 this seems to have taken > because I can ping localhost. However I cannot ping > past it. Hi As one responder has already noted, we really need more information. However, I would suggest you start by typing ifconfig (You will probably have to be root to do this; just type su and enter your root password. Type exit to get out later) This should show an eth0 entry in addition to the lo entry. If you have no eth0 entry get back to us (we have to backtrack). If you have an eth0 entry, look to see what the "inet address" is. For example, on the computer I have connected to the cable modem (Shrewsbury cable, but the general approach should be the same) give 216.195.16.123 which tells me I am on a network not in the local 192.168.m.n class so I read this as an address assigned by the cable company (dhcp, as an earlier responder indicated is likely for you too). Next try route -n Here I get three lines of interest, something like 216.195.16.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.248.0 U eth0 0.0.0.0 216.195.16.1 0.0.0.0 UG eth0 127.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 U lo The last line is your loopback address (as already noted by an earlier responder, a side issue). The first line meshes nicely with the ethernet address we saw above for eth0. This line says that, to get to anything in the network 216.195.16.0 with netmask 255.255.248.0, go out eth0. That makes sense. That card is on that network. The next line, says that, to go anywhere in general (that's what the 0.0.0.0 means) go through 216.195.16.1. That is another machine on that same network, and represents the "gateway" machine sitting somewhere in the cable company's office. Note that now my machine knows how to go anywhere. First it can use the first line to get to that 216.195.16.0 network and second, if it wants to go further, it can go to that specific gateway box at 216.195.16.1, which it can find since it is on that 216.195.16.0 network the first line tells us how to reach. (The U and UG says "up" (and running) and "up" as a "gateway".) Poke around now and see whether you can find any of these pieces for starters and, for security/safety exit su when done :-) doug -- Douglas R Waud 17 Lantern Lane, Shrewsbury, MA, 01545-2006 http://www.ummed.edu/pub/d/drw/

You need to have DHCP setup on your linux box to use this properly. I would suggest you get 'pump' to do the work. You may already have it installed, and if so, just do the following as root: pump -i eth0 and see what it says. Check with 'ifconfig -a' and with 'netstat -nr' to see what IP address and routes you get. John

Testing the printer looked funny because i didn't have the black ink cartridge in there. it looks like the Linux driver for the z32 is assuming that you have both the color AND the black cartridges. i'll find out for sure this weekend. FWIW, i'm running RH7.0. i tested the printer from the control-panel's Printer Configuration tool. the ascii test went through the motions of printing, which seems to have been explained when i did the PostScript test: only the color parts showed up, nothing that would have been black, which is why i came to the conclusion i did. i hope that much helps. Re: [Wlug] Cable Modem Charter.net

I am not familiar with charter. Do they use dhcp? (I'd guess that they might since MediaOne and RCN both do.) If so, have you enabled a dhcp daemon? Pump, dhcpcd, and the ISC dhcp daemon are the ones that I know of. Your distribution should include at least one of those; someone should be able to tell you specifically how to set up dhcp if you let us know which distribution you're using. Anyway, sorry if you've already done this and it still doesn't work. Your being able to ping localhost doesn't mean much, though, since localhost is generally set to 127.0.0.1, which is the loop-back interface.
