I can think of a few different options. The easiest would probably be to do something like rsync or tar via SSH. You can compress either at the application or tunnel level. I have a set of DMZ linux boxes which I backup twice a week (nothing really changes on them). I do this via rsync through SSH, and I let SSH do the compression (level 9 for best space, although it's slower). It works really nicely. Unfortunately there's not enough room for me to make a tar archive on the machine, and there's no tape drive either in the machine or at that facility that we can efficiently use. We get charged for bandwidth usage, so I would like to compress the backup before it comes over the wire. Also, this is a one time deal, so I can't go spending massive amounts of cash on some commercial backup software. Any Suggestions? -Marc

CDMA compatible phone and Linux...

Hey Everybody, Has anybody ever had any luck getting a CDMA phone (Motorola StarTAC) to work with Linux? I went looking and found software that would let you alter the phone-book on the phone, but didn't do anything about dialing. I'm figuring its either a) shows up like a Hayes device (which would be wonderful) or b) it uses some totally undocumented proprietary protocol I'll be forced to reverse engineer... Tim.

Hey guys, I know there are two lists, one for questions and one for announcements, hope this is the right one. Here is the question, hopefully someone knows or can point me to a good resource. I have the following system: Athlon TB 750, 256meg, ABIT KT7 RAID 2x20gig Hard Drives on RAID 0 Striping - Win2k Server Installed. (hde&hdf) 1x13 gig HD With Linux Mandrake 8.0 Installed. (hda) 1x60 gig HD for data. (hdb) I would like to have LILO come up first and then give me the option of booting to the Windows RAID Drives. However, if I boot to my 13 gig drive from the BIOS, and have LILO come up I can not get it to boot to the windows partitition. I have put in the entries to lilo.conf to boot to (hde) But that didnt work, /sbin/lilo gives errors (dont have them in front of me now:( ) I also tried to point it towards hdf, but that gave errors saying no valid boot sector etc. Sooo now in order to boot both OSs I need to have the BIOS load the RAID array as the default, and use a floppy to boot to linux. I can only think that lilo is having a problem knowing what drive to point to to load up windows since it is a raid array... This make sense? Thanks! Bill Bill

A VPN is a good idea. PPTP, however, isn't. I highly recomend using some other VPN setup, if at all possible. PPTP on linux doesn't excatly give you a rock solid network conneciton. But, if you have no other options, there are both a client and a server for linux. The server is called PoPToP. Search freshmeat for it. The client lives at http://merced.needsabeating.com/pptp.html. Andy, Thank you for the leads. I genuinely appreciate all of your time. I have been trying to chase the leads down. When I: ps ax | grep lpd I get: 419 ? S 0:00 lpd 906 pts/0 S 0:00 grep lpd It appears that I have the older file nomenclature of conf.modules and not modules.conf. It should work just the same though. Under modprobe -c I get a note: Note: /etc/conf.modules is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/modules.dep In the listing that follows I do have: alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc alias char-major-6 lp There is nothing for parport or lp under "options", Under "commands" I have: pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq I have to be honest with you and say that I am not sure what that actually means for the system mounting of appropriate the modules or not. Does this mean anything particular to you? Anyone else familiar with the difficulty? Assistance is enormously appreciated. Colin

Hello. I am new to this LUG. So I would like to say hello. Peter said that his wife has to connect to his SaMBa server from UMass. When I have had similar situations What I did was to setup a VPN using PPTP. That way you can block All SMB traffic to the outside world. Connect to the PPTP termination point with your client. Setup up the Tunnel and then the SMB information is passed on the inside of the tunnel. Thus keeping the integrity. Also this gives a smaller "signature" for your firewall/server to the real world. Andy, I would also enjoy some additional discussion on firewalls. Here are my suggestions for additional topics; 1) ipchains and dial out PPP. Setting up a fire wall for dialing into your favorite ISP. 2) ELF Files. How to read and map an ELF file. How to extract and use symbols. 3) Reading Linux crash dumps. Starting point and what to look for. Absolute locations in the dump. Interesting Linux data structures. 4) Writing a basic Linux driver. 5) Embedded Linux - There appears to be significantly more "Embedded Linux" job opportunities than "Linux" opportunities. How are they different? How do you move from Linux to embedded Linux? 6) Creating the ultimate ".emacs" file. This might be helpful to folks who are either considering implementing a firewall or who want to understand the canned script that they got from wherever. My idea for a subsequent meeting was to have a newbie meeting as we haven't had one in quite some time. One idea I had was to discuss a shell: a) bash - scripting, command line "tricks" perhaps go over a "real" script, such as a startup script in /etc/init.d/wherever... Take a look at your /etc/modules.conf file and see if you have anything uncommented in that file that looks like this: alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=none,none I am running a 2.2.18 kernel, and this is part of what I have. Since I have this, the proper modules get installed when I boot the machine. Check and see what you have. You might be able to get stuff working this way. I am going to guess that the "device or resource busy" is coming from your lpd daemon. Check to see if lpd is running with something like this: ps ax | grep lpd Good luck! So here is where I stand, I have discovered a backlog of queued docs and deleted them, but I am getting Device or resource busy when I try to insmod the two missing pieces from lsmod. Here is what I tried: parport_probe and parport are present in lsmod; lp and parport_pc are missing /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/ lp.o and parport_pc.o are present when I go to... [root@localhost misc]# insmod parport_pc I get Using parport_pc.o /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/parport_pc.o: init_module: Device or resource busy and the same for lp.o Using lp.o /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/lp.o: init_module: Device or resource busy So I am missing elements in lsmod, and there is something holding me back from using insmod. It might be as easy as loading a kernel module to make this work. Try this: 1) log in as root 2) type "lsmod" and see if "lp", "parport_pc" and "parport" show up 3) If they don't show up, you'll have to see if you have them: Look in /lib/modules/YOUR_KERNEL_REV/misc for lp.o, parport_pc.o, and parport.o If they are there, try "insmod parport parport_pc lp" (or something like that). If they are not there, you'll need to install the kernel modules package or empark on building them yourself. 4) Run "lsmod" again and you should now see them (as in step 2). 5) Once they show up in "lsmod", try: cat SOME_TEXT_FILE > /dev/lp0 Let us know how it goes, or if we can be of further help. delurking to grovel

Hello all, I've been lurking for quite some time now, though i'd pipe up. I've been hosting several very low volume domains through a dedicated dialup starting oh, sheesh, like six years ago via iii.net and using slackware 0.0.9 (am i old or what?). When iii bellied up, I switched to tiac, which was gobbled by psi - now in bankrupcy. suffice it to say that I've seen service levels as low as 95% (two weeks down per year). O.k., sure, I made some sucky choices on my ISP's but what is a guy to do if he's got like four domain names - pay $16.95 per month per domain for hosting? That just bites dead donkey dicks in hell - especially when all the sites combined push less than 1m/day Any suggestions for hosting on the cheap would be greatly appreciated - no dialup required. I have skills I can trade for hosting priviledges - I specialize in enterprise network and systems management (HP OpenView, micromuse, openNMS, UCD SNMP, MRTG, etc). co-location may be even easier - I could just pop my server onto your high-speed acess LAN, reconfig IP addresses, and make it even easier for you - charge me something, but I want to pay for what I serve - not my idiot factor...
