compaq deskpro

by Jim Stith

well here goes... i got an old compaq deskpro (yes, a stupid mistake... but it was cheap) and wanted to load red hat 7.0 on it and possibly use the deskpro as a intranet server so that i could learn how to set a server up. everything loads fine but when the system tries to go into x and give me a login screen, the monitor makes a poping sound and the screen goes blank. same thing with mandrake and caldera. the screen stays blank. i have gone into the bios and disabled pnp and energy saver but that does not help. i have been going through the faq's and the only thing i have found out is that compaq did some strange things around the mbr. i have no other options open to me and would appreciate any help anyone can give concerning this. thanks jim s.

I find that http://www.rpmfind.net works well for finding the rpm that provides a a certain executable or library. For example, if you go there and type in 'libdb-3' into the search box, it'll come up with a list of RPM's for different distributions and versions that provide that library - then you just have to pick the most recent one (or the version you need) for your distribution. -Chad +--[ Chad Pytel ]----------------------------------+ (508)756-1329 http://www.chadpytel.com +-------------------------------[ cpytel(a)wpi.edu ]-+ On Thu, 17 May 2001, Charles R. How could I determine that for dancro> myself if I run into another dependency? libdb-3 is in the db3 package. This is not easy to determine, unfortunately. The Red Hat up2date service can figure this out automatically, I believe. You shouldn't need the --replacefiles option to rpm. A conflict usually means you should use the -U option to rpm so the package is Upgraded, instead of Installed. Here is the order you will need to follow for the kernel upgrade. I'm doing this from memory, so I may have forgotten some dependencies. First upgrade rpm. You really should upgrade to all the latest packages in the Red Hat updates tree, since many security problems are fixed and the latest packages are required for other updates, as you have discovered. For instance, I believe there is a new gnorpm that works with the new rpm-4.0.2. The -F option means to only upgrade if an older package of the same name is already installed (Freshen). rpm -Uvh db3-*3.1.17-4.6x.i386.rpm rpm -Fvh rpm-*4.0.2-6x.i386.rpm popt-1.6.2-6x.i386.rpm rpm --rebuilddb (to convert to rpm 4 database files) Now install files required by the new kernel: rpm -Fvh mount-2.10r-0.6.x.i386.rpm nfs-utils-0.3.1-0.6.x.1.i386.rpm Upgrade all the kernel packages except the main one and smp one: rpm -Fvh kernel-BOOT-2.2.19-6.2.1.i386.rpm kernel-doc-2.2.19-6.2.1.i386.rpm kernel-headers-2.2.19-6.2.1.i386.rpm kernel-ibcs-2.2.19-6.2.1.i386.rpm kernel-pcmcia-cs-2.2.19-6.2.1.i386.rpm kernel-source-2.2.19-6.2.1.i386.rpm kernel-utils-2.2.19-6.2.1.i386.rpm Now choose the right main kernel package for your architecture (i386, i586, i686, regular or smp), and install that (don't upgrade it so you can keep the old one around if the new one gives you problems). The i586 and i686 versions are in their own subdirectories of the updates tree, not in the i386 subdirectory. rpm -ivh kernel-2.2.19-6.2.1.i686.rpm (notice the -i option to install instead of upgrade. This leaves the older versions around for emergencies.) Edit /etc/lilo.conf and make a new stanza and edit it for the new version (copy a stanza from another one in the file). Make sure to change the old stanza(s) to different labels (like linux.old or something): image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.19-6.2.1 label=linux initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.19-6.2.1.img read-only root=/dev/hda2 If you have an initrd line in lilo.conf that isn't empty, you need to create a new initial ram disk: /sbin/mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.2.19-6.2.1.img 2.2.19-6.2.1 Re-run lilo: /sbin/lilo Now you should be set to "shutdown -r now" and boot the new kernel.

newbie seeks help with kernel upgrade

by Dan Crooks

Hi, and thank you in advance for your patience. This deals with upgrading kernel In attempting to install vmware 2.0 in Red Hat 6.2, I was notified that I needed an upgrade to RH6.2 kernel. While trying to install the kernel upgrade with rpm I received error messages: 1) failed dependencies: rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0.1 is needed by kernel-2.2.19-6.2.1 2) mount < 2.10r conflicts with kernel-2.2... 3) nfs-utils < 0.3.1 conflicts with kernel-2.2... I understand that I can ignore the conflicts (2,3) by specifying --replacefiles in the rpm command. I decided to upgrade rpm assuming that rpmlib would be included. Using gnorpm I downloaded rpm 4.0-4 and received another error: only packages with major numbers <=3 are supported by this release of rpm. Presumably this message is issued by the currently version of rpm 3.0.4-0.48. This may be a red herring and not important as I continued. I used ncftp to download by specifying "mget rpm-*.rpm" and received four files rpm-4.0.2-6x.i386.rpm, also -build-, -devel-, -python- from RH site. When I tried to install rpm-4.0.2-6x I received an error: failed dependency libdb-3.1.so. Where can I find libdb? How could I determine that for myself if I run into another dependency? Do you have any suggestions/recommendations regarding updating kernel? I am using instructions retrieved from RH titled "Upgrading the Linus Kernel on Red Hat Linux systems" by Red Hat Support last updated 2000 May 17 -- Thank you, Dan Crooks

REMINDER: Meeting Wednesday, May 16th, 7:00 PM

by Andy Stewart

Hi everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held in Kinnicutt Hall (a.k.a the usual place) at WPI at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 16h. The topic for discussion will be the practical use of IPCHAINS. What does that mean? This meeting, Doug Waud and I will present to you ways to use IPCHAINS to implement a firewall. This is not theory, this is practice...what to type, what it does, and why. This talk will build on the more detailed information presented by Bob Ziegler at our last meeting. Doug will start with a presentation of the simpler case of getting a firewall up which supports masquerading (that is, getting multiple machines on your home network to share one IP address, as you would for cable modem, for example), e-mail, and browsing. I will follow up with more detailed examples of IPCHAINS code from my own firewall script for allowing certain services through the firewall to the home network. Although firewalling is a complex topic, we're hoping to distill out of that complexity enough information so that a person can get started toward implementing a secure firewall. I'm looking forward to a good turnout at this meeting. Come on down! Later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

Are you doing uni-directional NAT on the Linksys? Are there any firewall rules defined on the Linksys? In addition to allowing packets from outside to port 22 on your SSH server, do you allow outgoing packets from your SSH server on port 22 to local ephemeral ports (1024-65535) on the outside clients? I can think of a few different options. The easiest would probably be to do something like rsync or tar via SSH. You can compress either at the application or tunnel level. I have a set of DMZ linux boxes which I backup twice a week (nothing really changes on them). I do this via rsync through SSH, and I let SSH do the compression (level 9 for best space, although it's slower). It works really nicely. If you're interested, I can send you the script off-list. -- Randomly Generated Tagline: "For a while, all that stood between America and annihilation was a man with a drinking problem." - Some program on the Learning Channel

Hey Guys, I have a dedicated web server that I need to backup (entirely). Unfortunately there's not enough room for me to make a tar archive on the machine, and there's no tape drive either in the machine or at that facility that we can efficiently use. We get charged for bandwidth usage, so I would like to compress the backup before it comes over the wire. Also, this is a one time deal, so I can't go spending massive amounts of cash on some commercial backup software. Any Suggestions? -Marc

CDMA compatible phone and Linux...

by Keller, Tim

Hey Everybody, Has anybody ever had any luck getting a CDMA phone (Motorola StarTAC) to work with Linux? I went looking and found software that would let you alter the phone-book on the phone, but didn't do anything about dialing. I'm figuring its either a) shows up like a Hayes device (which would be wonderful) or b) it uses some totally undocumented proprietary protocol I'll be forced to reverse engineer... Tim.

Hope this is the right list...

by rlapp＠WPI.EDU

Hey guys, I know there are two lists, one for questions and one for announcements, hope this is the right one. Here is the question, hopefully someone knows or can point me to a good resource. I have the following system: Athlon TB 750, 256meg, ABIT KT7 RAID 2x20gig Hard Drives on RAID 0 Striping - Win2k Server Installed. (hde&hdf) 1x13 gig HD With Linux Mandrake 8.0 Installed. (hda) 1x60 gig HD for data. (hdb) I would like to have LILO come up first and then give me the option of booting to the Windows RAID Drives. However, if I boot to my 13 gig drive from the BIOS, and have LILO come up I can not get it to boot to the windows partitition. I have put in the entries to lilo.conf to boot to (hde) But that didnt work, /sbin/lilo gives errors (dont have them in front of me now:( ) I also tried to point it towards hdf, but that gave errors saying no valid boot sector etc. Sooo now in order to boot both OSs I need to have the BIOS load the RAID array as the default, and use a floppy to boot to linux. I can only think that lilo is having a problem knowing what drive to point to to load up windows since it is a raid array... This make sense? Thanks! Bill Bill

A VPN is a good idea. PPTP, however, isn't. I highly recomend using some other VPN setup, if at all possible. PPTP on linux doesn't excatly give you a rock solid network conneciton. But, if you have no other options, there are both a client and a server for linux. The server is called PoPToP. Search freshmeat for it. The client lives at http://merced.needsabeating.com/pptp.html. Well, so far it's not been a problem, although I keep a close watch on suspicious activity. (You'll notice entries for hosts allow and hosts deny. So far that seems to be pretty effective, although I do notice twits trying to access and being denied): hosts allow = 192.168.3.0/255.255.255.224 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0 128.119.216.0/255.255.255.0 216.175.212.192/255.255.255.240 hosts deny = all # <- no other machines can access Perhaps you could suggest conf options that allows [incoming] connections, but don't broadcast availability (i.e. is 'invicible' to all but people that know that that machine is a smb server). Hey I was looking at the sample smb.conf file (and I've set up a bunch of samba servers as well) and I saw something odd (well odd for me) -- start cut -- # Configure Samba to use multiple interfaces # If you have multiple network interfaces then you must list them # here. See the man page for details. interfaces = 192.168.3.1 24.91.122.146 -- end cut --

Andy, Thank you for the leads. I genuinely appreciate all of your time. I have been trying to chase the leads down. When I: ps ax | grep lpd I get: 419 ? S 0:00 lpd 906 pts/0 S 0:00 grep lpd It appears that I have the older file nomenclature of conf.modules and not modules.conf. It should work just the same though. Under modprobe -c I get a note: Note: /etc/conf.modules is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/modules.dep In the listing that follows I do have: alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc alias char-major-6 lp There is nothing for parport or lp under "options", Under "commands" I have: pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq I have to be honest with you and say that I am not sure what that actually means for the system mounting of appropriate the modules or not. Does this mean anything particular to you? Anyone else familiar with the difficulty? Assistance is enormously appreciated. Colin

Hello. I am new to this LUG. So I would like to say hello. Peter said that his wife has to connect to his SaMBa server from UMass. When I have had similar situations What I did was to setup a VPN using PPTP. That way you can block All SMB traffic to the outside world. Connect to the PPTP termination point with your client. Setup up the Tunnel and then the SMB information is passed on the inside of the tunnel. Thus keeping the integrity. Also this gives a smaller "signature" for your firewall/server to the real world. Just a though. Peter Gutowski wrote: > Well, so far it's not been a problem, although I keep a close watch on suspicious activity. (You'll notice entries for hosts allow and hosts deny. RE: [Wlug] Upcoming meetings - topic proposals

Andy, I would also enjoy some additional discussion on firewalls. Here are my suggestions for additional topics; 1) ipchains and dial out PPP. Setting up a fire wall for dialing into your favorite ISP. 2) ELF Files. How to read and map an ELF file. How to extract and use symbols. 3) Reading Linux crash dumps. Starting point and what to look for. Absolute locations in the dump. Interesting Linux data structures. 4) Writing a basic Linux driver. 5) Embedded Linux - There appears to be significantly more "Embedded Linux" job opportunities than "Linux" opportunities. How are they different? How do you move from Linux to embedded Linux? 6) Creating the ultimate ".emacs" file. Simple and useful Thanks, Bob -----Original Message----- From: wlug-admin(a)mail.wlug.org [mailto:wlug-admin@mail.wlug.org]On Behalf Of Andy Stewart Sent: Sunday, May 06, 2001 9:38 PM To: Worcester Linux Users' Group Subject: [Wlug] Upcoming meetings - topic proposals HI everybody, For our next meeting, I would like to have somebody finish the thread from the last meeting or two by explaining the contents of their firewall script and why the series of ipchains commands works for them. This might be helpful to folks who are either considering implementing a firewall or who want to understand the canned script that they got from wherever. My idea for a subsequent meeting was to have a newbie meeting as we haven't had one in quite some time. One idea I had was to discuss a shell: a) bash - scripting, command line "tricks" perhaps go over a "real" script, such as a startup script in /etc/init.d/wherever... Another idea would be to discuss the use of digital cameras with Linux. Are there other topics people would like to see? Are there volunteers to take on these topics? Perhaps there is a topic more interesting to you? Tom, Your comments indicate a distinct need. For now, you might be interested in checking out my sample commented smb.conf file at: http://www.linuxchamps.com/docs/samba/smbconf.html I'm not a samba expert by any means, but have been enough around the block with it to make it work.
