Hi > am having problems connecting to the network. "problems' is a tad vague. Can you ping another computer on the network by ip address (dotted quad)? (see specifics below) > I think that the problem is related to > the speed that the NIC is trying to use when connected to the LAN. I suspect > this because the little green speed indicator for 100mb is illuminated (on > the NIC) when the workstation is connected to the network jack. I interpret that the opposite way. I believe the card is telling you that it has been able to touch base with the network and the two of them have agreed to use 100 mb. Thus I think the hardware is fine. > ifconfig -a > > elxl0 flags=100843<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 > index 2 > inet 172.17.24.76 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 172.17.24.255 > ether 0:1:3:68:1b:f3 It looks like the card thinks it has a valid ip address so again I'd like to know if a ping works as the next step. > netstat -rn > > Routing Table: > Destination Gateway Flags Ref Use Interface > -------------------- -------------------- ----- ----- ------ --------- > 172.17.24.0 172.17.24.76 U 1 2 elxl0 > 224.0.0.0 172.17.24.76 U 1 0 elxl0 > default 172.17.24.3 UG 1 0 > 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 UH 29 1897 lo0 I'd try a ping 172.17.24.3 since that seems to be an outside computer on your network. You may already have this solved. I did not see this from the back and forth messages. Just got back to town so decided to put my two-bits worth in just in case I might actually have got the right answer :-) doug -- Douglas R Waud 17 Lantern Lane, Shrewsbury, MA, 01545-2006 http://www.ummed.edu/pub/d/drw/

hi> Just wondering if anybody here has had any problems/complaints about the > Charter cable modem services? My daughter in Southboro has Charter and I set up a router to her two (win98/linux) boxes. When Charter came, I provided my notebook running win98 for them to use to confirm the connection worked and then, the moment they went out the door, I disconnected the notebook and switche the cable modem to each of her computers and confirmed they both worked. Then I tried the router and lost the connection. A trip to the website of the cable modem manufacturer indicated a related model liked a crossover ethernet cable between the modem and a router. I tried that and the system has been running fine without any intervention on my part since then. doug -- Douglas R Waud 17 Lantern Lane, Shrewsbury, MA, 01545-2006 http://www.ummed.edu/pub/d/drw/

There is no guaranteed way of doing this from the OS since each driver is different (kind of annoying). You can look at mii-tool which should be able to get/set the network settings if the driver supports it. Otherwise it's dmesg or another driver specific method. If you just want to know the speed, your card may have a 10/100 mbit LED/set of LEDs on the back which will tell you. (My Kingston KNE111's at home have "100mbit" and "Full Duplex" LEDs, which will handle the 4 possibilities. (10hdx/10fdx/100hdx/100fdx)) With the Intel EEPro cards I have at work, you can cat /proc/net/PRO_LAN_Adapters/eth#.info and get a whole bunch of information including the speed/duplex: [...] System_Device_Name eth0 Current_HWaddr 00:D0:B7:7F:19:CC Permanent_HWaddr 00:D0:B7:7F:19:CC Part_Number 721383-009 Link up Speed 100 Duplex full State up Rx_Packets 733794920 Tx_Packets 828391473 [...] -- Randomly Generated Tagline: After watching my newly-retired dad spend two weeks learning how to make a new folder, it became obvious that "intuitive" mostly means "what the writer or speaker of intuitive likes". If the speed is mismatched, you won't be on the network at all. If the duplex is mismatched, you'll just get bad performance when doing certain operations (namely quick read/writes). You can determine this (usually) via "netstat -in" and looking for I/O errors and collisions on a FD network. > If anyone can help or has similar experience, please give me a shout. I > think I remember reading somewhere about a device driver file that can be > changed to force the speed of the NIC. Anyone else ?? Hmmm. I know relatively nothing about the Intel version of Solaris (I touched it once about 4 years ago), but on Solaris SPARC you would either use ndd to get/set the net driver settings (ala "ndd /dev/hme link_speed") or set the driver's settings via /etc/system: set hme:hme_adv_autoneg_cap=0 set hme:hme_adv_100T4_cap=0 set hme:hme_adv_100fdx_cap=1 set hme:hme_adv_100hdx_cap=0 set hme:hme_adv_10fdx_cap=0 set hme:hme_adv_10hdx_cap=0 As I said, I don't know if this is valid for Solaris Intel, but ... -- Randomly Generated Tagline: "... so people can't look up your skirt I guess... Got a quick question... Other than looking in dmesg for what the driver reported the speed of the cable of the network device, does anybody know what utility or place in /proc that'll tell you what the speed of the cable connected to your machine is. Thanks, Tim.

Hi, I've had Charter for almost a year and have had no problems. Except my modem going last month.. that was the first real big problem. Like any ISP.. they have had a few outages here in Auburn, but they didn't last more than 2 hours. I had no problems getting my Linux (Mandrake)system working with it. Problem with network card

by Simoncini, Matthew

Hi guys, This message is not actually a Linux based question, but is still "nix". I have recently installed Solaris 8 (for Intel) on a PC at work and am having problems connecting to the network. I think that the problem is related to the speed that the NIC is trying to use when connected to the LAN. I suspect this because the little green speed indicator for 100mb is illuminated (on the NIC) when the workstation is connected to the network jack. Here are some supporting details that I hope someone might find useful: Hardware: HP Vectra Vli8DT (733mhz) Solaris 8 for Intel 3com Etherlink XL PCI NIC ifconfig -a elxl0 flags=100843<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 2 inet 172.17.24.76 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 172.17.24.255 ether 0:1:3:68:1b:f3 netstat -rn Routing Table: Destination Gateway Flags Ref Use Interface -------------------- -------------------- ----- ----- ------ --------- 172.17.24.0 172.17.24.76 U 1 2 elxl0 224.0.0.0 172.17.24.76 U 1 0 elxl0 default 172.17.24.3 UG 1 0 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 UH 29 1897 lo0 If anyone can help or has similar experience, please give me a shout. I think I remember reading somewhere about a device driver file that can be changed to force the speed of the NIC. Anyone else ?? Thanks. Matthew

I also have a charter cable modem with a linksys router. However I set the router up to deliver dhcp addresses to roaming computers ie, my wife's laptop from work and the rest of my computers have static IPs. It saved me the hassle of setting up a dhcp server. For email I use KDE Mail and set it up to grab the mail directly from my isp's on demand. I have a charter cable modem, but I took the easy way out. I have a linksys firewall/router. I have static IPs behind the router. I have a single port (ssh) open, so I can connect while at work (like right now). I have two boxes running at home -- my linux box and a Win98 box. I have the linux box to myself, and my wife & 3 kids beat on the Win98 box. (Sometimes Win98 stays up for days at a time. :-) ) I have my email configured to use fetchmail to suck email directly from my charter email drop, and I read/compose it locally with pine. I'm slowly (oh so slowly) playing with DNS to supply services at home. Bill

Tom, I'd suggest you use LRP to setup a firewall on your home network. I've got Charter Cable modem and in it works great. I'm a bit swamped with work right now, but come talk to me later on via email and I'll see what I can do. Also, please turn off HTML in your email, it's a pain to read and deal with. Thanks, John

I am new to the Mass. area, but I use to be a Sr. Network Admin with Charter Communications. The question that I have is are you using Charter@home or Charter Pipeline? If it is Charter@home then you have to make some different changes in your setup. You have to add some domain information. It took a while to finally Linux DHCP to with with Charter@home but we were able to figure it out. If it is Charter Pipeline I will be willing to find you some contact information with one othe the Sr. Network Admins that I know. Tom > rpm -q pump > > pump is Red Hat's DHCP client. Hello all. I am FINALLY getting an iPaq and want to flash the ROM to install familar linux (or QT embedded). I've been looking over the howtos but I think I would feel better to have someone who's done this sitting over my shoulder so I don't make a $600 paperweight. Also, can someone tell me what apps are in ipkg format for familiar, I've been having trouble finding them? What about the possibility of switching between QT embedded and X for other useful apps (like, game boy emulators, for instance, or even the Atari Lynx...). Can anyone help me with this? Wes

Probably a quick one, but neither google or I have sorted it out yet... I have a HP LH PRO with a AMI Megaraid controller in it. Connected to the controller are 2 4gig disks I've got configured to be mirrored using the hardware raid. (when doing the install you only see 1 4 gig disk) Now Mandrake 7.2 installs fine, and when using a boot floppy can see the controller etc... however when booting off of the controller, lilo comes up, it finds the kernel image and then stops at "unpacking the kernel..." I don't get any errors, it just hangs. I hooked up a regular scsi disk to one of the other Adaptec controllers but by the nature of the way the machine is layered out sda is the raid controller so the boot sector ends up on it anyway. My kernel works properly because it can access all the filesystems that reside on those disks, I just can't boot off of them. It feels like an issue with lilo... If anybody has experience with this I'd like to know what the solution would be.
