As for your fsck woes, I'd get the latest version of ext3 instead, since you can enable/disable it without having to do a dump/restore conversion like you would for reiserfs. It's not in 2.4.6 by default, but it's easy to patch your kernel with it. What is shmfs?

HI gang, After upgrading to a 2.4 kernel, I now see a mounted device thus: Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on shmfs 76220 0 76220 0% /dev/shm I can't find anything written that says what this is. Hi Andy - Try the VALinux beta 2.4.5 kernel: ftp://ftp.valinux.com/pub/software/kernel/beta USB hasn't been a priority for VA but one of the usb-linux developers is inside the VA kernel group and tends to plug in a bunch of stuff with each of the kernels. HI Charlie et al, I completely blew away my modules directory and rebuilt my kernel to use uniprocessor (I never did like those canned kernels and canned modules - call me old fashioned but they generally cause me grief). Now, USB works like a champ! I've just printed several docs using CUPS and gimp-print - sweet! Bummer that this doesn't work under SMP...is this a known problem? I doubt my computer is *that* unique. I really would like my SMP back. :-) I did notice one thing - eth0 and usb-uhci are sharing an interrupt. The motherboard magically assigns this and I believe that I can't override it. I wonder if this is causing the problem in SMP mode. I guess I'll keep my eyes open for kernel rev 2.4.7. Hi Andy - Long time no see. 2 things: That kernel comes with EXT3 already integrated in the source. Once you have an ext3 kernel you can enable it by changing fstab. Disable it by changing fstab. The on-disk structure is the same. Start debugging by booting with the second CPU turned off. You could be locking on MP bug. It is my understanding that a crossover cable is needed when connecting two similar devices such as 2 switches or 2 routers. Maybe your cable modem has some builtin router functionality?! USB hangs system - requires reboot

I haven't used Charter for very long (2 months at the most) for net access, but I only had a problem once. When I eventually got through on the telephone, they were as stumped as I was (although there had apparantly been a surge of problems that morning in my area) ... modem would shut off whenever the activity LED first blinked. We eventually agreed that a tech would come out and look at it. 15 minutes after I hung up, it was working again. As far as setting it up: when the techs came, I let them mess with my father's Win98 computer. They even ran a new line to the house for better reception. After they left, I rewired a bit. You can look at mii-tool which should be able to get/set the network settings if the driver supports it. Otherwise it's dmesg or another driver specific method. If you just want to know the speed, your card may have a 10/100 mbit LED/set of LEDs on the back which will tell you. (My Kingston KNE111's at home have "100mbit" and "Full Duplex" LEDs, which will handle the 4 possibilities. If the speed is mismatched, you won't be on the network at all. If the duplex is mismatched, you'll just get bad performance when doing certain operations (namely quick read/writes). I've seen some outages -- the recent thunderstorms put them off the air for over a day, but I'm not running anything mission critical. I really like the bandwidth. Their support is another matter. They rarely respond to email, and then after a couple of days. Their frontline support is clueless. They claimed one problem was because my email address was case sensitive. It wasn't (I tested), and when I informed them of that fact, their email communication stopped. They like you to call their phone line rather than use email, but the wait on the line is inexcusable. They claim that the wait is short, but I've never experience a short wait. Bill

Hi, I've had Charter for almost a year and have had no problems. Except my modem going last month.. that was the first real big problem. Like any ISP.. they have had a few outages here in Auburn, but they didn't last more than 2 hours. I had no problems getting my Linux (Mandrake)system working with it. Problem with network card

Hi guys, This message is not actually a Linux based question, but is still "nix". I have recently installed Solaris 8 (for Intel) on a PC at work and am having problems connecting to the network. I think that the problem is related to the speed that the NIC is trying to use when connected to the LAN. I suspect this because the little green speed indicator for 100mb is illuminated (on the NIC) when the workstation is connected to the network jack.
