System crash

by Long, Mike

Hi all, I have been having problems with my system locking to the point where I needed to press the reset button to recycle the box. Well, this happened again and this time things are not working properly after bringing the system back up. I have been able to start networking services and I can start KDE desktop but none of my X applications will run. Now I have several questions: 1) What type of problems could have been created by an improper shutdown of the box? 2) Will reinstalling KDE fix this problem? 3) How do I go about figuring out what is causing my machine to lock up? It is happening frequently (every few days) and when I am doing different things. I have not been able to determine a pattern. Thanks, Mike

bizzare font behavior

by brad

Hey all, Each time i boot my machine it seems to toggle between two interpretations of 12pt fonts. There seems to be a random patten for my computer interpreting fonts. One time it will be really, small, the next boot, it will have big fonts. The font configuration is the same (mostly size 10pt font in KDE2). But each time the computer boots, i have no idea if I'm going to be able to read the fonts on my screen, or if it's going to be too big. It's on a RH7.1 i installed few weeks ago. I have KDE2 running, and i have the graphical login window when i boot. Any ideas? Thanks, --Brad

HI all, There is currently no scheduled speaker or topic for the August WLUG meeting. If you would like to do this talk, I think it would be great. I'm curious as to what you would like to cover, or what others might like to see covered. Let me seed the conversation bu suggesting the following possibilities: 1) Supported DVD players 2) What software, kernel, apps, etc needed to use DVD 3) DVD-ROM - just like a CDROM, but bigger - anything special or funny here? 4) DVD-RAM - now there's an idea 5) Video DVD - can I watch The Matrix while coding? :-) These are just thoughts and suggestions....are there others? Possible topic for the next meeting?

by Brian J. Conway

Greetings, I don't know whether there is a topic for the next meeting and it just hasn't made it onto the web page or not, but I figured I'd offer a suggestion to the group. Is anyone interested on seeing a presentation on the various DVD players that are available for Linux along with their setup. hardware support, and configuration, etc? I'm headed to the west coast next week for a 7-day Alaskan cruise, and I really need something to do for the 6-hour plane ride each way other than watching Top Gun. I'd be happy to do so, but I figured I'd ask the group instead of just mailing Andy as "installing and running a couple of apps in Linux" might be on the light side for a presentation. If people are interested and there's already something for this month, just let me know and I'll write something up. Just my two cents, let me know if there's any interest (this hasn't already been done, right?). Brian J. Conway dogbert(a)clue4all.net Geek for hire: http://clue4all.net/resume Power Mac G4 Cube. Any ideas as to why? Hi Wes, It sounds like it may be time for a few more folks to jump in. Can you tell us a little more about your system? What distro are you running? What version of the kernel and X? If you run xfontsel, can you see your font families in the family pulldown? It may be perfectly normal for your fonts.dir file to contain a 0. Mine does! However, this was the command used to generate it: /usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir -e /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings \ -e /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings/large . &>/dev/null I think the real information about the fonts are stored in the encodings directory. Any ideas as to why? Wes AFAIK, with Type1 fonts, you need to have an entry for them in the matching fonts.scale for them to appear in fonts.dir from mkfontdir (this may or may not be debian-specific). From mkfontdir (1x): SCALABLE FONTS (this may or may not be debian-specific). From mkfontdir (1x): name, the file "fonts.scale" can be used to name the scalable fonts in the directory. The fonts listed in it are copied to fonts.dir by mkfont dir. "fonts.scale" has the same format as the "fonts.dir" file. g'luck -- Aaron Haviland orion [at] tribble [dot] dyndns [dot] org orion [at] parsed [dot] net http://www.aaron.haviland.net ICQ: 43079202

Have you found the web site http://www.linuxdoc.org yet? At linuxdoc there is an excellent set of documentation that's well written and easy to understand. They have a search engine, and entering Type 1 fonts should lead you to a HOWTO on how to do it. Have said that, two things need to happen: 1) X has to know where to find the fonts 2) The directory needs to have a special file called fonts.dir X knows where to look for fonts based on data in its configuration file, /etc/X11/XF86Config In there, look for one or more lines starting with FontPath You can just add a line, FontPath "path to your Type1 fonts directory" OR you can copy your fonts (both the .afm and .pfb files) to where the rest of the Type 1 fonts are, and dispense with editing XF86Config. By default, the Type 1 fonts are in a subdirectory of /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts OR if you are using a font server, you can edit another file instead. I won't cover that possibility. Check out the HOWTOs for more info. Having done one of the above, X should be able to find your fonts. The next requirement is to create or update a file called fonts.dir in the directory where your new fonts are now located. Red Hat updates fonts.dir for you at boot time automatically. Yours may as well. But you can create the file by connecting to the directory and typing rm -f fonts.dir && ttmkfontdir . Restart your X environment and see if your <program> can see your fonts. Good luck, Skip

QPE has a settings app called Light & Power that can control the backlight. Make sure you install apmd and h3600-utils out of familiar also. I just wrote a little script for syncing: #!/bin/sh ntpdate my.home.time.server ipkg update ipkg upgrade RSYNC_RSH=ssh export RSYNC_RSH rsync -va --exclude=/proc / user@my.home.machine:/path/to/backup I think it'll just be a matter of time before there are KDE apps that can do real syncing with the qpe PDA utilities. Hey Gang, I finally installed linux on my ipaq, and installed QT embedded last night, and part of this morning. The cable modem that I have from charter (Motorola Surfboard 4100) cache's and locks onto one MAC address. You need to reboot the cable modem by unplugging it and plugging it back in (Or going to the modem's webpage at http://192.168.100.1 and restarting it). Not sure if this is your problem, but in people questions about Charter I haven't heard anyone mention this "feature" of the modem their handing out now. Hi, I just got broadband at home and am loving every minute of it. But I'm hitting one snag... I dusted off an old sonicwall we had lying around at my job and got permission to take it home, after hacking the firewall I got everything set up and ready to go, my wan was hooked up to the cable modem, my lan was hooked up to the hub, the dhcp server was set up, and I had NAT w/dhcp client as the default setting. So I reboot the firewall and it doesn't get an ip address! I erase any trace of the older, static, settings, and try again, noting. Has anyone else got this problem? I'm stuck with Charter communications, do they have some way to avoid giving addresses to firewalls; if so, hello DSL my wife is tied to windows and I'm not shelling out money for something that comes built into linux. The winmodem is the problem. I had one, and got it to work under the 2.2 kernels, but to the best of my knowledge, the patch hasn't been done yet for the 2.4 kernels. You have two choices: go back to a 2.2 kernel or get another modem. If your box has an ISA slot, you can get a 56K Rockwell chip modem for about the same bucks as a winmodem. The AOpen models sells for around $30.00. Hello, It is quite probably that the winmodem will never work with Linux, but indeed there are a (very) few that do. Check this website for more information: http://www.linmodems.org/ If you really need the modem, I'd advise you to go buy a real one (e.g. not a winmodem). Also, you will need to know which network card you have, or more importantly, the name/number of (probably the) biggest chip on the board. With this information, we can help you to configure it properly. We would be happy to help if you can supply this information to us.
