I've installed Bugzilla before, and evaluated the install, and the package itself. installing Bugzilla

I missed the last install-fest, and am anxiously awaiting the next one. I'm considering deploying Bugzilla in my group, and was wondering if anyone has experience installing it, or even opinions about using it. The doc sends mixed messages about the complexity of the install: "Bugzilla is not a package where you can just plop it in a directory, twiddle a few things, and you're off." and then later on... "Installation of Bugzilla is pretty straightforward." The doc also makes it pretty clear that it'll run on Windows, but that there's additional complexity. It even sounds like it'll be easier to install on OSX than on Win2k, and that's fine with me. thanks in advance for any opinions, Rick Gansler

Gary, I own the same router as you and I've got 2 linux boxes (one is pure, the other is duel boot). I just have static host files because the router has a sane DHCP server that assigns based on MAC address, so all your machines will keep the same address, regardless of OS. So I went to the man page for dhcpcd (one dhcp client daemon) and found there is both a -H switch, which forces a hostname to that supplied by the server and a -h switch which sends the hostname to the server. I suspect the latter is what windows is already doing. (I mention the former as a reserve in case the -h does not turn out to work.) I also looked at my router (a Linux box) which happens to be using dhclient (another dhcp client daemon) and in its /etc/dhclient.conf there is a place where you can insert send host-name "box1.localdomain" which, it would appear, would do the same thing as above. (I should warn you that I am using SuSE so my /etc/dhclient.conf file may have a lot of stuff in it which is not usually there (SuSE is very good this way; they put it all in and then all you have to do is remove a comment and/or change some text. But the basic behavior of dhclient should be the same.) Unfortunately I can't modify any DCHP config settings in the router (that I know of anyway), so I have to find a way to either get the Linux PCs to report their host names to the router or have the router find the hostname from the PC. When booted in Windows they do that but in Linux they do not. Of course I can always go back to a static IP and I might just ultimately do that, but I'd like to know if there is a way to make this work. irda help

Hi gang, I've finally gotten the irDa stack working in my dell laptop (why, oh why is it disabled by default in the BIOS?). Here's my problem; I'm having trouble having the ppp connection being authenticated when a connection is made. My iPaq connects, has the host name of my laptop ok; but stalls there. I've followed the steps on the ir-howto, and it's what got me to this point, but there's no troubleshooting help for this particular problem. Here's the command I run to start the attachement... irattach /dev/ttyS2 -s 1 At this point my iPaq tries to authenticate, and then stalls. I would REALLY like to be able to transfer data between my iPaq and my laptop; and since I haven't heard of anyone being able to connect an iPaq to Linux via a USB cable, this looks like my best shot (besides, I really want to learn ir so I can control my TV from my laptop). Anyone got some ideas, if you help me solve it I'll try and submit something to the HOWTO so others can work around it. Wes

My problem is that I need to resolve the hostnames between the 3 Linux machines on my private lan and the router isn't doing that. When they are booted in Windows the DCHP table shows the IP and hostname of each PC, but when booted in Linux the router doesn't resolve the hostname to IP...so when I ping a hostname I get nothing. Can you do a bash$raw -qa as root and post the output. I assume that you used the "raw" command to bind the block device for raw I/O such as bash$raw /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/hdc1 On another note you may also want to check the permissions on the device file(s). This would cause the open to fail! Raw IO Howto

Folks, I'd like to be able to queue read/write request to my Zip drive and bypass the buffering that goes on in the kernel. From what I've read, you can do this by binding the raw device (/dev/raw) to /dev/hdc1 for example. When I do that, I get a message that /dev/raw/raw1 has ben bound to char major 22 1. When I try open("/dev/raw/raw1",O_RDWR|O_CREAT,S_IREAD|S_IWRITE); it fails. Can someone tell me how to do this please? Thanks, Skip

Essentially there's a daemon somewhere that says "there are X licenses available", and the application can be installed in a billion different places. However, the licensing code will only allow the application to run in X places simultaneously. It's the "book licensing method" -- you can give the book to anyone you want, but it can only be used by one person at a time. It would also be possible to say "unlimited licenses", and then use the licensing system as an audit system to find out how many users are actually using the application, etc. I think the end of the discussion was that open source and this licensing type of system are contrary to each other. It turns out that the license server needs to be node-locked. I think that all licensing models (except maybe the MicroSoft "everyone contacts the MS big-brother server" model) require node-locking at some level. Flexlm locks the server to a node, which doles out licenses as necessary. Bill
