Re: [Wlug] AOL in Negotiations to Buy Red Hat

"But the AOL software could be configured to override Windows and launch a version of Red Hat's Linux operating system, sources said." Override and launch? Does anyone know what they mean here? Are they talking about clicking on the AOL icon and booting into linux?? Fwd: Millbury Schools...

by Andy Stewart

Hi gang, I just received an e-mail from Rob Bellville from Millbury Public Schools. He has a bunch of old PowerMac 6100s and was wondering if it made sense to convert them to work as thin Linux clients (similar to the Linux terminal server project (ltsp.org)) If somebody would like to take a crack at doing this for a couple of these PowerMacs as a proof of concept, give Rob a shout at rb(a)millbury.net. I've attached Rob's e-mail, which has more detail. Later, Andy ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: Millbury Schools... Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2002 13:14:25 -0500 From: <rb(a)millbury.net> To: andystewart(a)mediaone.net Andy, I have a thought about a WLUG project for the Millbury Schools. We are disposing of about 20-30 PowerMac 6100s and I was wondering if anyone in the WLUG group had any experience with thin linux terminals (LTSP.org) I've got one of them running mkLinux right now and I have a nice hefty Dell server (1GHz / 512 MB RAM) that could power quite a few of these clients. I'd hate to throw away all these Macs when they could be used somewhere within the district. They are 66 MHz / 40 MB RAM / 600 MB HD with NICs. The only problem at the moment is that timing is critical. They are being stored and need to be removed in the next month. I can let a few of them go to someone who wanted to work on them at home. I'd like to be able to have them be at the very minimum an Internet terminal and maybe run StarOffice or something similar. Let me know your thoughts. Like I said, this project could be done outside of the school and then come back to clone the remaining Macs after they were tested. I would be willing to give a few of them to someone as compensation. I'm still in a hectic school-construction mode so my participation will be limited to a minimum but I would be happy to deliver the Macs to anyone who was willing to give it a go. Also, it would be a good thing to write up for the LTSP.org website as they don't have much in the way of using Macs as thin clients. Thanks! -- Rob --== rb(a)millbury.net ==-- ------------------------------------------------------- -- Andy Stewart Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA, USA http://www.wlug.org

Re: [Wlug] Power Mac 6100s...

by Adam ＠ Oak

These are either 66 or 80 mhz PPC 601, Nu-Bus based Macs, hence the limitation to mkLinux and not LinuxPPC. Also I think they take 72 pin EDO. At some point Apple, in their infinite wisdom switched to 168 pin EDO, which a bitch to find. I think that was at the 7300 level though. -Adam On Fri, 18 Jan 2002, Michael Frysinger wrote: > what are the specs on it ? > -mike > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <rb(a)millbury.net> > To: <wlug(a)mail.wlug.org> > Sent: Friday, January 18, 2002 12:56 PM > Subject: [Wlug] Power Mac 6100s... > > > > If anyone is interested in PowerMac 6100s for Linux or otherwise, please > > email me privately. If anyone is interested in PowerMac 6100s for Linux or otherwise, please email me privately. I have a quantity of these units to trade off or sell cheap. I'm still working out the logistical details but wanted to see if anyone had any interest in these units. I've got one of them running mkLinux pretty well right now. - Rob

Ziegler's book was the only firewalling book that made sense to me as a newbie 1+ years ago when I was trying to get an IPChains firewall installed on a DSL connected RH7 box. Just noticed this last week that the 2nd edition is out as of Oct 2001, which, while I haven't seen it yet, it is supposed to be updated for IPTables. Re: [Wlug] General firewall question

by Andy Stewart

I played with Coyote Linux briefly, and I believe that it has the ability to do what you want. You might have to play with it a bit. Its advantage is its small size and you don't need a hard drive to run it. However, I seem to remember that you need a Linux system on which to unpack the tar ball and on which to run the scripts that create the single floppy image for the firewall. Double check, as my memory might be foggy. One might also opt for a minimal Linux installation with the addition of the necessary firewall software. I know that SuSE Linux has such an option in its canned installation. Robert Ziegler wrote a book entitled "Linux Firewalls" which I liked, but it is not for the fainthearted. General firewall question

by Tim Trachimowicz

Hey folks... I'm currently running Apache on Win2K to serve a small personal webpage through my static IP assigned by my DSL provider. The machine is a "test" server but I'd like to secure it a little more. I've got a spare box sitting around that I'd like to use as a firewall/router, specifically with something like Coyote Linux/the LRP distros. I'm wondering if it's possible to use the DHCP features in such a firewall setup to pass the HTTP requests (router with static IP, server with a 192.168.x.x type IP) to the Win2K box AND limit the connections only to HTTP port 80 on the Win2K box. Next step would be a Win2K mailserver... Does this make sense or would a pure Linux server/IPtables type setup be easier? TIA, --Track _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp.

NFS? problem

by Bill Mills-Curran

I have two linux boxes that have nfs-mounted a file system from a DG/UX server. One of them cannot read the directories properly. Here's a short Perl script: **************************************************************** #!/usr/bin/perl opendir(DIR, $ARGV[0]) or die; @files = readdir(DIR); print(join("\n", @files, '')); exit(0); **************************************************************** On server A: % uname -a Linux A 2.4.16 #1 SMP Fri Dec 14 15:31:54 EST 2001 i686 unknown On server B: % uname -a Linux B 2.4.2-2 #1 Sun Apr 8 20:41:30 EDT 2001 i686 unknown B is running the standard RedHat 7.1 kernel, while server A has been upgraded. On B, when I run the test script, supplying the name of an NFS directory (on the DG/UX server), I get the "right stuff" -- a good directory listing. On A, the same operation gives me nothing. No failure or anything. The script works find on local disks and on disks NFS mounted from a Sun server. The A server also has the reiserfs installed on an unrelated drive. The symptom is not limited to perl scripts. I get strange behavior from tcsh, too. Any ideas? Thanks, Bill
