Re: [Wlug] can't connect with ftp, says connection time out

by Peter Gutowski

Bob, You haven't given us much to go on, but here's a shot: I'm assuming that this is the first time you've tried this. If so then you might not have configured inetd or xinetd to start the the ftp service when it detects an incoming ftp connection. My system ( Redhat 7.1 Intel) uses xinetd and the config files are in the directory /etc/xinetd; there's one for each service. Try to identify the file that corresponds to your ftp service. Again mine is named 'wu-ftpd' and it's a short file. Open the file with a text editor and look for a line that says 'disable = yes' and change the yes to a no, or delete the line completely. This done, you'll need to restart xinetd (or inetd). On my system I'd enter the command /etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart to accomplish this. Perhaps that'll get you over the hump on this one. But there are other possibilities as well. If this doesn't work, please take a look at your log files, they can provide you (and us!) with valuable clues as to the nature of the problem. It's not uncommon for posters to include short, pertinent portions of a log file for us to see. Another strong possibility is that a packet filter is coming into play and that you incoming ftp request is just being ignored. That's handled by 'ipchains' or 'iptables' and is typically setup at startup time. It that appears to be the case, read the init.d script and see where it's looking for its configuration file, then check *that* file for any special handling of 'ftp' ports 21 and 20. The strongest likelyhood is that both of the above things need to be done. But, be warned about FTP in general: unless you're using it off the internet, historically it's been the source of many breakins and cannot be considered secure by nomal users as login and password are passed in cleartext over the internet. Consider using ssh and scp (components of OpenSSH) instead -- there's client software available for non-linux OSs too. -Peter On 3/7/2002 11:23 PM, babine <babinefamily(a)charter.net> wrote: > >When I try to ftp to my server, i get a connection time out. FYI: Upcoming speakers at Softpro in Burlington

by Andy Stewart

Several O'Reilly authors--as well as Tim O'Reilly--will be speaking in the near future at Softpro Books in Burlington (details below). If you know of ways we could spread the word about these upcoming events, please let me know at marsee(a)oreilly.com. Books will be discounted during the event, and there will be door prizes. Open Invitation to SIGS and User Groups: Softpro is happy to host your group. They have space to accomodate up to 30 people in Burlington and up to 12 in Marlborough. Reserve a time by writing to events(a)softpro.com. Softpro Events: Tim O'Reilly on Emerging Tech Trends Wednesday, March 13--6:30 PM Tim will talk about emerging tech trends that O'Reilly & Associates is following, including bioinformatics, community wireless, web services, and the evolution of what he's calling "the internet operating system." For more information on Tim O'Reilly see: http://www.oreilly.com/oreilly/tim_bio.html Jesse Liberty on ASP v. ASP.NET Wednesday, March 20--6:30 PM The principal difference between ASP.NET and ASP is that the new programming model is more object-oriented and more event-driven. This will be illustrated by extracting records from a database and filling a DataGrid in a web form, coloring some records based on their content, and responding to the ItemDataBound event. Along the way Jesse will also explain how to create code-behind pages for web forms, how to retrieve data from a database and how to populate the DataGrid. Jesse Liberty is the author of "Programming ASP.NET" and "Programming C#" among others. To see more information on Jesse Liberty or the books he has written for O'Reilly, visit: http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/catalog/view/au/239?x-t=book.view Erik Ray on Perl and XML Wednesday, April 3--6:30-8:00 PM. Erik Ray is coauthor of the upcoming book "Perl & XML" (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/perlxml/) XML is a text-based markup language that has taken the programming world by storm. More powerful than HTML yet less demanding than SGML, XML has proven itself to be flexible and resilient. XML is the perfect tool for formatting documents with even the smallest bit of complexity, from Web pages to legal contracts to books. However, XML has also proven itself to be indispensable for organizing and conveying other sorts of data as well, thus its central role in web services like SOAP and XML-RPC. As the Perl programming language was tailor-made for manipulating text, few people have disputed the fact that Perl and XML are perfectly suited for one another. The only question has been what's the best way to do it. Noel Rappin on Jython Wednesday, April 24--6:30-8:00 PM. Noel Rappin is coauthor of "Jython Essentials" (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/jythoness/) Jython is an implementation of the Python programming language written in Java, allowing Python programs to integrate seamlessly with any Java code. The secret to Jython's popularity lies in the combination of Java's libraries and tools with Python's rapid development capabilities. "Jython Essentials" provides a solid introduction to the language, numerous examples of Jython/Java interaction, and valuable reference material on modules and libraries of use to Jython programmers. Re: [Wlug] nvidia with X

You might be driving your screen incorrectly. If you have the manual to your monitor set the Horizontal and Vertical refresh rates to those listed in the monitor manual. Here is a snippet of the relevent section of XF86Config-4: # ********************************************************************** # Monitor section # ********************************************************************** # Any number of monitor sections may be present Section "Monitor" Identifier "My Monitor" # HorizSync is in kHz unless units are specified. # HorizSync may be a comma separated list of discrete values, or a # comma separated list of ranges of values. # NOTE: THE VALUES HERE ARE EXAMPLES ONLY. REFER TO YOUR MONITOR'S # USER MANUAL FOR THE CORRECT NUMBERS. HorizSync 31-96 # HorizSync 30-64 # multisync # HorizSync 31.5, 35.2 # multiple fixed sync frequencies # HorizSync 15-25, 30-50 # multiple ranges of sync frequencies # VertRefresh is in Hz unless units are specified. # VertRefresh may be a comma separated list of discrete values, or a # comma separated list of ranges of values. # NOTE: THE VALUES HERE ARE EXAMPLES ONLY. REFER TO YOUR MONITOR'S # USER MANUAL FOR THE CORRECT NUMBERS. VertRefresh 50-160 EndSection If I don't have the specs I usually set the ranges low and then widen them bit by bit. Note the low end of the ranges are standard for almost all monitors so you shouldn't need to change them. This works because XFree86 4 is aware of standard VESA modes and can figure out what's best for the monitor. -Adam On Thu, 7 Mar 2002, Brad Noyes wrote: > Hi all i've been struggling with trying to get nvidia's drivers to > work for my TNT PCI card. Possible swap meet?

by Clint Moyer

As there is currently (AFAIK) no topic for the next Wednesday's WLUG meeting, I'd like to propose the possibility of a kinda sorta swap meet. I'm probably not the only person with an assortment of PC parts of dubious value. However one man's trash is another's treasure. Perhaps interested parties could bring their old parts to the meeting for possible exchange for someone else's. Is this practical, feasible, desireable or not a good idea at all?

Hi all i've been struggling with trying to get nvidia's drivers to work for my TNT PCI card. The install goes fine, but when i startx, i only get a blank screen. Looking at the Log, i don't see any fatal errors. When i kill X (from a remote machine using ssh) my screen displays a few dozen vertical lines, and no console. I'm not very fluent in X, perhaps someone can spot an error in the config, or log file. Thanks, --brad

OpenOffice Macros

by Wesley Allen

Hi everyone, I'm just sitting here doing some work and realized something. I should be able to reduce my keystrokes a LOT by writing some macros that would allow me to "quick change" my fonts in OpenOffice. I'm doing some research right now, but I never learned VB (which, I assume, OpenOfficeBasic is a derrivitave of) so I'm starting cold. Has anyone out there written some macros for OpenOffice? All I need is the ability to switch quickly between: English, Greek, and Hebrew. I'm not sure how to start. Like I said, I'm doing the research, but any hints and/or examples you all could share would be WONDERFUL. Thanks everyone, Wes
