SCSI error message

by Bill Mills-Curran

I added a 2nd disk to my linux box, and I'm getting these messages at boot. (I'm not 100% sure they are new messages, because it's been a long time since I've booted.) Mar 25 09:28:33 pent584 kernel: SCSI subsystem driver Revision: 1.00 Mar 25 09:28:33 pent584 kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:08.0 Mar 25 09:28:33 pent584 kernel: (scsi0) <Adaptec AIC-7880 Ultra SCSI host adapter> found at PCI 0/8/0 Mar 25 09:28:33 pent584 kernel: (scsi0) Wide Channel, SCSI ID=7, 16/255 SCBs Mar 25 09:28:33 pent584 kernel: (scsi0) Warning - detected auto-termination Mar 25 09:28:33 pent584 kernel: (scsi0) Please verify driver detected settings are correct. Only two Mar 25 09:28:33 pent584 kernel: (scsi0) connectors on the SCSI controller may be in use at a time! Other than these messages, the disk seems to be working fine. I've tried different termination settings on the disk, but nothing has helped. There is a terminator on the scsi cable, and I did not change it. Any ideas? Thanks, Bill

Re: [Wlug] normal boot up (was: new mandrake)

by Brad Noyes

Thanks Brian and Jeff for the repsonses. I did remove bootsplash, and no more splash screen. Now when i boot up i don't see any kernel messages or and services start up. I only see message displayed when a service fails. Anyone now how to get my boot to display all the messages? so far the new mandrake 'features' have been somewhat annoying. Thanks, --brad

Re: [Wlug] /dev permissions & ownership

by Charles R. Anderson

On Red Hat systems, pam_console is configured by default to change the permissions on certain console devices (floppy, cdrom, sound, etc.) when users login/logout of the console. This is done so the console user automatically can use these devices when they log in, and the permissions revert to root when they log out. This is completely configurable through the /etc/security/console.perms file. I don't know what distro you have, but check your CD (or web site) for the script. You may find that it was left in the /dev directory, and all you need to do is execute it. If you use devfs, the devices are created at boot time. --Skip

wanted: inexpensive server

by Michelle Vadeboncoeur

A small cash-strapped startup just had their email/web/etc. server die on them (hardware issue), and is looking for an inexpensive replacement. If you either have an older server kicking around that you'd like to pass along, or if you can point me to somewhere (like an equipment sale) that may have a box that'll fit the bill, I'd love to hear about it. (We're hoping for something less expensive (or better equipped for the same price) than the new $3000 box that we've been quoted.) Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. :) The main requirements that I was given for a replacement is: dual power supplies 6 drive bays PC-based (Intel/AMD and the like) Plusses: larger amount of hard drive space (the biggest plus) rack-mount Compaq better processor or memory SCSI hot-swappable drives The box will eventually be running Windows 2000 Server and Exchange (but the box that died was a Pentium (something) @200MHz and managed ok (SMALL startup company), so processor speed/memory isn't a major issue). The box will preferrably be running RAID5. As it's a W2k networked site, there's probably going to be a bunch of emailed Office files, so a large amount of HD space is what we're going for. If you need any more information about our needs, feel free to email me. If you don't quite know if the system that you have will work out for us, let me know anyways and I can pass the info along to our main IT guy. Again, thanks in advance for any pointers you can send! -- --==*==-- --==*==-- Michelle R. Vadeboncoeur --==*==-- --==*==-- mrv(a)kluge.net: http://www.kluge.net/~mrv/

Re: [Wlug] Sharp's Linux PDA

It does run Qtopia (f.k.a. QT palmtop). I think it also comes with Opera embeded as well. I have Qtopia running on my Ipaq. There's more info at http://qpe.sourceforge.net. It's pretty functional, i think that the one thing it's missing is natural handwriting recognition. It only have a character recognizer like the palm. context menu in mozilla 0.9.9

by Baris Hasdemir

hi, I want to put a URL link to one of the context menus in Mozilla. Do you think it is possible? Do you think I have to deal with the source of the program?(which I don't think I can) Or is there another way to alter the values in the context menus? For example, I will highlight a word on a web page, and when right click on it, mozilla will query dict.org with my highlighted word, on a new browser window. I hope my question is clear. thanks, baris

VMS & CLD's -- a blast from the past

by Bill Mills-Curran

Many moons ago, I spent my callow youth as a VMS geek and was fairly capable for a mechanical engineer. I got around the Command Language Definition (CLD) compiler (I can't remember the name of the compiler) and learned to appreciate it's flexibility and power. UNIX/linux, etc. has nothing (that I've seen) that even comes close. The reason I bring this up is that a friend of mine has written a spec for an ambitious command line interpreter that has a bit of the flavor of the VMS CLD's. This has led me to wonder if anyone has seen a port of anything like the VMS CLD language to UNIX/linux. I know that the syntax would have to be different because the VMS option "/" would interfere with the *nix directory syntax. Anyone have any suggestions? And yes, I do remember punch cards, keypunches, paper tape, disk drives as big as washing machines, etc. TIA, Bill

Looking for Linux Sublaptop

by desdinova＠soupforare.net

Hi all! I know this is probably an odd question to ask the list, but I was wondering if anyone has a (relatively) small laptop they'd like to sell? I'm primarily interested in the Libretto 'CT's, Mitsu Amitys, and Sony Picturebooks. I'd *love* to find a Thinkpad 235, but considering they were never sold here (well, sold here, repackaged, as the Ricoh Magio), I'm not keeping my hopes up. Was surprised when I read back over a year ago that earthlink had formed a partnership with Charter Communications. Actually I was orginally on Earthlink before I switched to Charter Cable. After I had Charter installed I called Earthlink to cancel my account, they said there was no need to. They said I could be connected to Charter Cable but still maintain my billing with Earthlink. At that time Charter in Worcester had just come online a few days. They did not have my area of Worcester on Earthlink's list yet. Rather then getting caught up between the two I just cancelled Earthlink. Now I don't know if Earthlkink supplies the actual network for Charter? Or something else might envolved?
