I can beat you on that "old". I have a Plextor PX-65CS which I bought Dec 8, 1995 :-). Seriously, if it would be any use to you, you are welcome to try it. It has a two fifty pin centronics connectors (and I have a cable from that to a twenty five pin connector). It uses a caddy but I suspect that is no problem. I assume it will be about as slow as you can get given its birth date. You can setup netatalk on another Linux box and can download any Mac files you need, first to your Mac and then copy them to the other Mac volume on the other machine. The 7.5.3 system folder on the Network Access Disk and the MkLinux Booter will allow you to load a Linux kernel and initRD to install YDL. I now have an installer with the MkLinux booter, a 2.4.6-pre3 kernel and initRD into a small (20 MB) HFS partition. The kernel uses the onboard NIC and can then do a network install of YDL 1.2. The newer releases, though, can only be installed from a local CD or DVD. --Skip

Bad NIC?

HI gang, I have a network interface on my firewall that is throwing receive errors at me. They are in the overrun and frame columns of the ifconfig printout for that interface. I tried to restart the interface and reload the kernel module to no avail. I also power cycled the Linksys switch and cabled to a different switch port. A different cable didn't help, either. I'd rather not reboot the machine with 135 days of uptime. I noticed that on a 100 Mbit ethernet segment, I'm getting a failure rate on approx. 25% of the packets. Reducing the MTU from 1500 to 768 helps the transfer rate but doesn't solve the problem. This is the only machine on my home network that shows any errors. Any thoughts? PowerMac CD-ROM

Does anyone have a SCSI cdrom that I can borrow/buy for an old 7500? My linux box is such a hackjob of software that I want to reinstall it with YDL. Low and behold I try it last week and the damn CDROM drive doesnt seem to work! Some files copy, some dont... I will just assume its the drive due to age/heat. So I was hoping someone (near WPI) had a CDROM drive i could borrow (external would be good). The drive i think would have to work in MacOS too (to install BOOTX files). Such a PITA some times. If your machien has been broken into, the only way to clean it up is to reformat and reinstall. They cannot trust any binary left on the system (including the kernel) so you won't truely know when you've cleaned it up. In your case, hotmail denied the mail at the point where they were receiving the message, so your sending server bounces the message back to you. The other bounce message (that we're actually talking about) seems to come from inside hotmail itself, but it gives no information other than: Reporting-MTA: dns;hotmail.com Received-From-MTA: dns;dc-mx04.cluster1.charter.net Final-Recipient: rfc822;kamikaze003(a)hotmail.com Action: failed Status: 5.0.0 So we know that "hotmail.com" (and who knows what server that actually is) thought it could deliver the mail, so it accepted it, but ended up unable to deliver the message for unknown reasons (no description given), so it bounced back to the sender. I don't see how this problem would have any relation to Charter, Linux, pine, etc. It seems to be very much a Hotmail specific issue. I'd start bugging postmaster(a)hotmail.com to be honest. can anyone determine from the status codes what software the Reporting-MTA is? Maybe the reason is hidden in that code. Your mysterious non-delivery generated a Status: 5.0.0 for a comparison returned email, I send a test message to a friend's inactive hotmail account (disabled for lack of use). So I had to start using RCN's cr4ppy-a55 SMTP server, which was down every other day and waited 2 hours before relaying my mail. :( -Chuck

I'm using Courier, which tends to be more strict on following RFCs, and in the case of an MX record w/ a IP address (not compliant with an RFC) bails rather than look to the next, even if it is at the same MX priority. -mike

Well, there's 2 possible issues. 1) it's likely that they block your outgoing directly to hotmail's mail servers. 2) most of the hotmail mail servers seem to be down or rejecting connections for me (via DSL), so they may just be having problems. (I could only connect to 5, 9, and 13 of all of these 14 hosts...) If you see a similar response to the telnet as I have above, you should be able to connect to hotmail just fine. Since 11 of their 14 hosts aren't responding, and all of the MX levels are the same (5), there may be an issue there. I know that you get a round-robin effect with the hosts, but I don't remember if it's single-attempt round robin (ie: try mx11, ok it failed, wait a little bit, then try mx11 again), if it's a single-attempt with lookups in between (ie: try mx11, ok it failed, wait a little bit, do a lookup and try the returned host round-robin again (so you may or may not get the same host again)), or if it's a multiple-attempt round robin (ie: try mx11, ok it failed, try mx12, ok it failed, continue until one succeeds.) -- Randomly Generated Tagline: Hee, hee! problems with email to hotmail.com

I'm a Charter user, and something has changed between charter and hotmail so that I can no longer send email to hotmail.com accounts. I CAN send if I use Charter's web mail interface, but I much prefer to stick with pine. I suspect that the problem is that I'm behind a linksys router using private IP's and NAT. I've tried talking to Charter tech support, but they are worthless -- they just tell me that they only support Outlook email. I've tried configuring Pine so the it uses the Charter smtp server directly, but that doesn't seem to help, either. Right now, I'm using my local machine, and routing through Charter. Any ideas? If you are looking for a WM, I highly suggest either fluxbox or blackbox (with Fluxbox being the better choice) with the -no-kde and -no-gnome options.
