weird ethernet problem...

I just moved a box from a testing network to a DMZ network and I'm getting all this weird ethernet crap... here's the error's I keep getting NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out status 7088 0c00 at 241/301 command 001c000 the commands are different along with the status codes. the box has a Intel 10/100 Pro card running at 100 full duplex. I hooked up a win2k laptop configured it to the proper ip in the DMZ and it worked fine, so I know it's not the link. Thanks, Tim.

After sending off that first reply, I recalled that I had got a cheap webcam going some time ago. I went back to find it (took a while!) but it was not that weeCam (it was a Creative Model CT6840). However, I did find some notes I made at the time. The SuSE 7.2 Configuration manual has a chapter on "Watching TV on your PC" (yes, it does pay to buy the distro to get the manuals) which I followed. Basically, I ended up using xawtv (aw as in Athena widgets) which, in turn, uses V4L (video for linux). It looks like I just used Yast (the SuSE sysadmin tool) to install these two, plugged the camera into the USB port, and then went into a terminal (Alt/F2) and typed xawtv and a window came up with the picture from the camera. I just tried the last steps (Alt/F2 and xawtv) and got a view of the bookcase behind me. If you want to borrow that manual and don't mind driving out to Shrewsbury, you are welcome to take a peek. If you do come out, bring your camera and we can plug it in instead of mine and see if it works. doug

You might find the WLUG slides for the Oct 11 2002 meeting helpful as background. While I was dealing with a compact flash reader and USB, you may still find the basic ritual informative. Apparently the driver (thus far) was entirely reverse engineered with no help from Logitech, it might be a good place to start looking for info debugging what's coming across the USB cable and running with it. Just a quick note to those who are interested, the DEC 3000/900 is a deskside unit, and it's got six TurboChannel slots in it. It will be hard to find any expansion cards that will work with Linux. But it will handle a bunch of internal SCSI 50 pin disks and they're pretty solid boxes. I'd be interested myself, but my wife would kill me. :] John

USB Driver: Where to start?

Folks, I've got this idiot little USB camera that I got as part of a promotion. (Specifically, it's a QuickVideo weeCam USB from Alaris that I got a couple years back from Earthlink.) Near as I can figure, there are no drivers for this fool thing for Linux. IF I were to attack the problem, where should I start? I've noticed in the logs that the system sees it when it is connected and disconnected, so I suppose that's a Good Thing, but I don't know where to go from there. Thanks for the help, I got it working with the link I received earlier. I just added the info for my card in "/etc/pcmcia/config" and restart "cardmgr" service. You can give that a try, by going into the SCSI-Select utility (ctl-a on boot), and turn down the scsi bus speed. --brad

Just one more thought: Files with goofy names might be indicative of a screwed-up file system. It may not be a bad idea to run fsck before you go deleting any of those strange files.

Sendmail

I have sendmail set up here at work, and everyone can send email fine, except when I try to send using the good old mail command.. it tells me "Can't create transcript file ./xfg4OGa2S21960: Permission denied queueup: cannot create queue temp file ./tfg4OGa2S21960, uid=500: Permission denied" I have tried doing chmod 777 on the "/var/spool/mqueue" and it still fails. However when I use pine and set my smtp server to box.domain.com ( the localhosts name ) I am able to send fine. This problem is preventing a webmail client I wrote from sending mail... Any ideas? strange filenames

Hi All For some reason i sometimes find files with strange names like '??'. When i do a long listing the file name changes to some other bizare character combination. When i try to delete the file using 'rm', or cat it, i can't seem to pass the correct filename to rm (i do try to escape characters, and use 'TAB' but no luck). Is there a way to pass an inode number to rm or cat? thanks, --brad
