I have a DDS-3 drive and would be happy to copy the data off for you. Do you know what format the data is in (tar, cpio, Veritas, etc.)? DDS3 tape drive?

by Michelle Vadeboncoeur

Hey guys - I've got an old backup tape from 1999 that I'd like to get the data off of. My big problem - I don't have the old system/tape drive around anymore, or personally have anything that can handle the tape. (The DDS2 tape drive I tried just spit the tape back out at me.) The tape is a DDS-3 Data Cartridge (Compressed Capacity 24 GB), an HP C5708A. I do not know how much data is on the tape (or if it's been corrupted), but I doubt that it's anywhere near the 24GB. All I really need is a data dump (to either a CD-R or such that I can FTP off to my server), and I'll poke through it later. I really can't spare the $680 (the cheapest data recovery quote I've gotten) for a possibly corrupted tape... any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. 8) -- --==*==-- --==*==-- Michelle R. REMINDER: Meeting Thursday, June 13th, 7 PM

by Andy Stewart

Hi Everybody, This e-mail is to remind you about the upcoming WLUG meeting which is being held on Thursday, June 13th at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall on the WPI Campus in Worcester, MA, USA. With the arrival of my new daughter two weeks ago (May 24), it has been very busy at my house. Combined with some unrestful evenings, I have not had any time to prepare a presentation for this meeting. The floor is open for anybody who has a reasonable presentation to make to the group. Please contact me to make arrangements. As you've seen in the past, the presentation need not be extremely fancy. Feedback I've received from group members indicates that these presentations are well received, and are certainly better alternatives to sitting around for an hour trying to figure out what to discuss. :-) Recent Linux developments that might be fodder for discussion are KDE 3.0.x, United Linux, aptget-rpm, Mozilla 1.0, OpenOffice.org 1.0, and probably many other things. At this meeting, we can also attempt to finalize our plans for a WLUG summer barbecue. It might be a good idea to combine this with a 5th year anniversary celebration, as WLUG was originally founded in July of 1997. After the meeting, we will make our monthly pilgrimage to the Boynton Restaurant. -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

less & line numbers

by Bill Mills-Curran

This is weird... I can't get "less" to display line numbers in the left column. All that happens is that the text of the file I'm viewing shifts to the right, adding 2 blank columns. It looks like the shift amount is too small to display the numbers, so I don't get to see them. I'm seeing this on both RedHat 7.1 and 7.2 systems. On an older system (6.0?), less shows the line numbers. (I could have sworn that this was working right recently, but it doesn't now.) I'm using the "--LINE-NUMBERS" option to try to see the lines on the newer versions, and the "-N" option on the older versions. Any ideas? TIA, Bill

WMA --> MP3 conversion?

by Bill Smith

Hi all, I have a bunch of files that are in asf format. I understand that this is basically WMA (Windows Media Audio). Makes sense, since they are recordings of church services. :) Anyway, I want to convert them to MP3 so that I can hear them without having to stoop to loading certain Left Coast poor-excuse-for-operating-systems... Would anyone happen to know of a good/reasonable WMA-->MP3 converter for Linux? Well as the current maintainer of the Linux driver for the Spectrum24 cards and variants, I could recommend those (although I maybe biased). Most people are able to get them up and working without too many problems. I do realize that the driver does need some work as far as a couple random problems (mainly with pumpd, dhcpcd works fine), but the orinoco driver also supports these cards, so youdo have choices :) The cards that I know that are either based on the prism2 chipset, or are rebranded Symbol cards include the Intel 2011 (but not the 2011B ... wierd) the nortel card, and the Symbol card .. .I think there are a bunch more, but I cant think of them off of the top of my head. Mandrake's got kudzu, so if I plug in another mouse it'll detect it during boot and ask to set it up. It's an absolute pain, but it works. And init script should be able to probe for a mouse and load the correct XF86config, but it's beyond me. Did you try a #linux irc channel? They usually know what's going on with that stuff. Ok. Obvously the serial port is working fine if you can login to it. I'd try the UPS software agin. If it still doesn work. Maybee try the windows software out. That would at least verify that your cable is wired correctly to the UPS.. John Stoffel earlier mentioned using the apcupsd. I'd give that a shot too. I use that to monitor some APC smart UPS's On Tue, 4 Jun 2002, Bill Mills-Curran wrote: > Karl, > > I've done the testing you suggested... Re: [Wlug] monitoring a Matrix 3000

by Bill Mills-Curran

Karl, I've done the testing you suggested... I hooked up a null modem cable to another linux box that was configured to allow serial port logins. After using minicom to configure the port (9600 bps), I was able to log in. I could also exit minicom and, using 2 terminal windows: term 1: cat > /dev/ttyS0 term 2: cat /dev/ttys0 I was able to get the login and password prompts with the above, so I have some indication that the serial port is working, although I don't know if it's right for the UPS. My next test is to scrounge a signal analyzer (and someone who knows how to use it) to see if the upsd daemon is sending signals out the port. more below... Bill, I've had problems with serial ports in the past. Usually a really dumb reasion for it not working. Verify the BIOS has the port turned on. With the default IO address and IRQ settings. Does a mouse work on the port? If you have a null modem cable. (Switches RX and TX lines) you can hook two computers together. Run terminal programs on each (with the same baud rate settings, no flow control). You should be able to type chars between the two boxes. Have minicom installed? can it open the port without an error? If you don't have a null modem cable/connector you can pick them up at most radio shacks. Or you could try communicating with an external modem. Running a redhat default kernel? Should work fine. If you compiled your own make sure you have the serial port setup correctly in your kernel config. Try chmod 666 /dev/ttyS0 Serial HOWTO: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Serial-HOWTO.html Serial Laplink howto: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Serial-Laplink-HOWTO/index.html Have a DOS bootdisk? You could try running an old skool terminal program like procomm or something like that. Or hypertermainal in M$ Windowz. Good luck. Re: [Wlug] Multiple mice on a laptop

by Nate Godin

Hmm... I did this a while back, setting up a serial trackball in addition to my PS2 mouse on my desktop... you have to load a the XInput module, and do some XF86Config tweaking... I don't have the config file I used anymore, but I recall figuring out how to do it by reading the XF86Config man page... here's an example... Here is an example of a ServerLayout section for a dual headed configuration with two mice: Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Layout 1" Screen "MGA 1" Screen "MGA 2" RightOf "MGA 1" InputDevice "Keyboard 1" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse 1" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Mouse 2" "SendCoreEvents" Option "BlankTime" "5" EndSection My G4 Powerbook actually seems to be able to do this automatically, I'll go boot that over to Linux and post the XF86Config file... Multiple mice on a laptop

by Adam Elliott

Hello, I've got a laptop that usually resides in a docking station at work, where it is connected to an ordinary wheelmouse. That works fine. When I take the laptop out of the docking station, disconnect the mouse, and start up Linux again (so using the touchpad), the pointer tends to go crazy. Now, I know the reason for this is the protocol is wrong in the XF86Config file. The wheelmouse uses IMPS/2 with 5 buttons (3+wheel), the touchpad PS/2 with 2 buttons. I can fix this by editing the XF86Config file appropriately, and the touchpad works fine. Now, my question is: Is there any way to get Linux to automatically figure out that the mouse is not attached, and so fall back on the touchpad? BTW, I've set up two "Pointer" sections in XF86Config, and just adjust the CorePointer line to reference the correct one. XFree doesn't like having two CorePointers. I'm using SuSE 7.3, XFree86 4.x if it matters. Thanks, -Adam

Re: [Wlug] monitoring a Matrix 3000

by Bill Mills-Curran

Karl, I agree that the serial port is the prime suspect. (I'm working the serial port test you suggested) Can you give any hints as to what might need to be configured? Note that this is a new installation, and I've done nothing to set up the port. Any suggestions what configuration changes or module loads I might need to enable traffic on ttyS0 and ttyS1? (i usually go by debian's port listing to find out what architechtures work. http://debian.org/ports/alpha/sys_types) but man... (like i need another piece of crap in my bedroom) i want to try :) -- Aaron Haviland orion [at] tribble [dot] dyndns [dot] org orion [at] parsed [dot] net This sig. intentionally left blank.

Re: [Wlug] dual mother suggestons

by David Goss

http://www.intel.com/products/browse/motherbd.htm?iid=Homepage+Find_Products _Motherboards& I work with the STL2 & SCB2 boards. We manufacture for some drug companies and have thousands of these boards in the field. My experience with them is only as far as installing the O/S of which 90% is Wndoze ( NT 4.). The boards I have installed Linux ( Red Hat 7.0-3 ) have been nice to work with. Intel support is good as well. Not trying to plug them but you do get what you pay for and these boards have proven reliable albeit expensive. Hope that helps. Re: [Wlug] Wireless nics and linux.

by Jeremy

I had a orinoco card working under linux a while ago.. It seemed to work well at my wireless net in worcester. It varies from card to card: DLINK has linux drivers, lucent has unoffical ports (orinoco cards), 3Com used to have one, but it was a rebrand of another card (symbol S24) Anyone else using lucent cards? if you can afford i would recommend 'em. I bought a 3Com card orginally and thought it would be good, but had quality issues. So I got the Lucent card and am much happier. DLINK is surprising good, but not sure about the linux support. --- Wesley Allen <wallen(a)charter.net> wrote: > Hi All, > I may be FINALLY getting some wireless access in my house (It's amazing > what a simple furniture move can accomplish).
