Assuming you're using a reasonably current linux distro, you probably want to be doing this through pam. http://search.cpan.org/search?dist=Authen-PAM should get you going. This way you'd get all the locking and atomic operations that you really want when messing with the passwd files. Interesting enough after I sent the last email. I did some research (yes it was quick research) and came up with a couple things that might iterest you. I would suggest going to www.cpan.org and getting the md5 package for perl. Or even better, I'm sure someone has wanted to do this same thing or something similar and might have even written all or most of the script. CPAN is the place to look. you could look at the source code to the passwd utility or the apache htpasswd program. As Andy suggested, Anyone have ideas? Like to see something presented? Anyone done much with LDAP servers? Authentication? Network security? iptables? One thing i would like to know. I currently have an iptables FW setup with logging of all rejected packets. Something similar to LogWatch that summarizes the rejected packets would be nice. DDS3 tape drive?

Hey guys - I've got an old backup tape from 1999 that I'd like to get the data off of. My big problem - I don't have the old system/tape drive around anymore, or personally have anything that can handle the tape. (The DDS2 tape drive I tried just spit the tape back out at me.) The tape is a DDS-3 Data Cartridge (Compressed Capacity 24 GB), an HP C5708A. I do not know how much data is on the tape (or if it's been corrupted), but I doubt that it's anywhere near the 24GB. All I really need is a data dump (to either a CD-R or such that I can FTP off to my server), and I'll poke through it later. I really can't spare the $680 (the cheapest data recovery quote I've gotten) for a possibly corrupted tape... any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. 8) -- --==*==-- --==*==-- Michelle R. Hi Everybody, This e-mail is to remind you about the upcoming WLUG meeting which is being held on Thursday, June 13th at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall on the WPI Campus in Worcester, MA, USA. With the arrival of my new daughter two weeks ago (May 24), it has been very busy at my house. Combined with some unrestful evenings, I have not had any time to prepare a presentation for this meeting. The floor is open for anybody who has a reasonable presentation to make to the group. Please contact me to make arrangements. As you've seen in the past, the presentation need not be extremely fancy. Feedback I've received from group members indicates that these presentations are well received, and are certainly better alternatives to sitting around for an hour trying to figure out what to discuss. :-) Recent Linux developments that might be fodder for discussion are KDE 3.0.x, United Linux, aptget-rpm, Mozilla 1.0, OpenOffice.org 1.0, and probably many other things. At this meeting, we can also attempt to finalize our plans for a WLUG summer barbecue. It might be a good idea to combine this with a 5th year anniversary celebration, as WLUG was originally founded in July of 1997. less & line numbers

This is weird... I can't get "less" to display line numbers in the left column. All that happens is that the text of the file I'm viewing shifts to the right, adding 2 blank columns. It looks like the shift amount is too small to display the numbers, so I don't get to see them. I'm seeing this on both RedHat 7.1 and 7.2 systems. On an older system (6.0?), less shows the line numbers. (I could have sworn that this was working right recently, but it doesn't now.) I'm using the "--LINE-NUMBERS" option to try to see the lines on the newer versions, and the "-N" option on the older versions. Any ideas? TIA, Bill

WMA --> MP3 conversion?

Hi all, I have a bunch of files that are in asf format. I understand that this is basically WMA (Windows Media Audio). Makes sense, since they are recordings of church services. :) Anyway, I want to convert them to MP3 so that I can hear them without having to stoop to loading certain Left Coast poor-excuse-for-operating-systems... Would anyone happen to know of a good/reasonable WMA-->MP3 converter for Linux? Well as the current maintainer of the Linux driver for the Spectrum24 cards and variants, I could recommend those (although I maybe biased). Most people are able to get them up and working without too many problems. I do realize that the driver does need some work as far as a couple random problems (mainly with pumpd, dhcpcd works fine), but the orinoco driver also supports these cards, so youdo have choices :) The cards that I know that are either based on the prism2 chipset, or are rebranded Symbol cards include the Intel 2011 (but not the 2011B ... wierd) the nortel card, and the Symbol card .. .I think there are a bunch more, but I cant think of them off of the top of my head. Mandrake's got kudzu, so if I plug in another mouse it'll detect it during boot and ask to set it up. It's an absolute pain, but it works. And init script should be able to probe for a mouse and load the correct XF86config, but it's beyond me. Did you try a #linux irc channel? They usually know what's going on with that stuff. Ok. Obvously the serial port is working fine if you can login to it. I'd try the UPS software agin. If it still doesn work. Maybee try the windows software out. That would at least verify that your cable is wired correctly to the UPS.. John Stoffel earlier mentioned using the apcupsd. I'd give that a shot too. Karl, I've done the testing you suggested... I hooked up a null modem cable to another linux box that was configured to allow serial port logins. After using minicom to configure the port (9600 bps), I was able to log in. I could also exit minicom and, using 2 terminal windows: term 1: cat > /dev/ttyS0 term 2: cat /dev/ttys0 I was able to get the login and password prompts with the above, so I have some indication that the serial port is working, although I don't know if it's right for the UPS. My next test is to scrounge a signal analyzer (and someone who knows how to use it) to see if the upsd daemon is sending signals out the port. more below...
