The porting part is all taken care of, thankfully. Although one of the platforms i'm working with is cygwin. rpm already uses uname to determine the OS. But if you build a package on one system, say Linux and i try installing it on Cygwin, i get the error the the package was build for a different OS. I want to build a rpm package simaliar to how noarch rpms, but instead of arch independent i want it to be OS independent. There are tags for the spec file '%ifos ... %endif', but that's only for the build machine. I also noticed that in the system rpmrc file (/usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc), that all archs are compatable to 'noarch' like so arch_compat: alpha: axp noarch but i don't see a common name that all OSs are compatable with. i don't think this is possible but i thought i'd ask anyway. Wireless

I just bought a new Netgear Ma401 wireless card. I figured it was pretty cheap and it seemed like it was supported under linux. Well after doing some research I've found conflicting views. Some say its a PrismII based card, some say its a Orinco card. I have no idea and I'm new wireless with linux. My question is, does anyone have this card and wants to point me in the right direction. Or can someone point me in the right direction for wireless and linux in general. Assuming you're using a reasonably current linux distro, you probably want to be doing this through pam. http://search.cpan.org/search?dist=Authen-PAM should get you going. This way you'd get all the locking and atomic operations that you really want when messing with the passwd files. Interesting enough after I sent the last email. I did some research (yes it was quick research) and came up with a couple things that might iterest you. There is a package called MD%-crypt which should suit your purpose (http://search.cpan.org/doc/LUISMUNOZ/Crypt-PasswdMD5-1.2/PasswdMD5.pm) I also found, http://search.cpan.org/doc/SSNODGRA/Unix-ConfigFile-0.06/PasswdFile.pm, which provides access to /etc/password and does everything for you. I would suggest going to www.cpan.org and getting the md5 package for perl. Or even better, I'm sure someone has wanted to do this same thing or something similar and might have even written all or most of the script. CPAN is the place to look. you could look at the source code to the passwd utility or the apache htpasswd program. As Andy suggested, Anyone have ideas? Like to see something presented? Anyone done much with LDAP servers? Authentication? Network security? iptables? One thing i would like to know. I currently have an iptables FW setup with logging of all rejected packets. Something similar to LogWatch that summarizes the rejected packets would be nice. DDS3 tape drive?

Hey guys - I've got an old backup tape from 1999 that I'd like to get the data off of. My big problem - I don't have the old system/tape drive around anymore, or personally have anything that can handle the tape. (The DDS2 tape drive I tried just spit the tape back out at me.) The tape is a DDS-3 Data Cartridge (Compressed Capacity 24 GB), an HP C5708A. I do not know how much data is on the tape (or if it's been corrupted), but I doubt that it's anywhere near the 24GB. All I really need is a data dump (to either a CD-R or such that I can FTP off to my server), and I'll poke through it later. I really can't spare the $680 (the cheapest data recovery quote I've gotten) for a possibly corrupted tape... any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. 8) -- --==*==-- --==*==-- Michelle R. With the arrival of my new daughter two weeks ago (May 24), it has been very busy at my house. Combined with some unrestful evenings, I have not had any time to prepare a presentation for this meeting. The floor is open for anybody who has a reasonable presentation to make to the group. Please contact me to make arrangements. As you've seen in the past, the presentation need not be extremely fancy. Feedback I've received from group members indicates that these presentations are well received, and are certainly better alternatives to sitting around for an hour trying to figure out what to discuss. :-) Recent Linux developments that might be fodder for discussion are KDE 3.0.x, United Linux, aptget-rpm, Mozilla 1.0, OpenOffice.org 1.0, and probably many other things. At this meeting, we can also attempt to finalize our plans for a WLUG summer barbecue. It might be a good idea to combine this with a 5th year anniversary celebration, as WLUG was originally founded in July of 1997. less & line numbers

This is weird... I can't get "less" to display line numbers in the left column. All that happens is that the text of the file I'm viewing shifts to the right, adding 2 blank columns. It looks like the shift amount is too small to display the numbers, so I don't get to see them. I'm seeing this on both RedHat 7.1 and 7.2 systems. On an older system (6.0?), less shows the line numbers. (I could have sworn that this was working right recently, but it doesn't now.) I'm using the "--LINE-NUMBERS" option to try to see the lines on the newer versions, and the "-N" option on the older versions. Any ideas? TIA, Bill
