Try upping it, my Dell Inspiron 8000 with 15" screen looks crisp (and correct) at 1400x1050 but gets fuzzy at 1280x1024 and less. Laptop question - screen resolution

by Andy Stewart

HI WLUG, My laptop has a 15" screen rated for 1024x768. I setup my laptop to have 3 resolutions in my XF86Config file: 1024x768 (default) 800x600 640x480 With XFree86 4.x, it appears that I don't explicitly need to specify a mode line any more (but I can if I wish). SuSE's configuration process puts a mode line in for me. When I run X and then run xvidtune, when I'm in 1024x768 mode, it indicates a refresh of 60 Hz. However, when I run in 800x600 mode, xvidtune thinks the refresh rate is around 90Hz, and in 640x480 mode, xvidtune thinks the refresh rate is 131 Hz(!). I'm not sure I believe it since I don't think the display can handle that (but if it is true, am I seriously overdriving the display?). Also note that in the lower resolution modes, the display actually looks a tad fuzzy. I am not using anti-aliased fonts. Is this normal for laptops or am I doing something wrong? Thanks, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

what i do is give the encapsulating element an id id=f00 then in the mouseover event, i just create a new element, and set element f00 equal to it then on mouseout, i restore the original table in this way i have a bar on the right of mouseovers, with the large center table changing if you want some example code ill send it private like -mike ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wesley Allen" <wallen(a)charter.net> To: <wlug(a)mail.wlug.org> Sent: Saturday, June 15, 2002 16:49 Subject: [Wlug] Javascript Help > Guys, > My Javascript + dhtml has always been one great hack. Boston Globe article

by Bill Mills-Curran

http://digitalmass.boston.com/news/globe_tech/at_large/2002/0617.html Today's edition of the Boston Globe has an article about collaborative tools. Featured in the article is a product called SiteScape which I had seemed demo'd just last week. Many of the features of the collaborative tool set are familiar to me in other settings: email, IRC (for "immediate" stuff), news (for discussions) and version control to track document modifications. One feature they mentioned that I have not encountered in the UNIX/Linux/Gnu world is a collaborative whiteboard that allows different users to share an electronic whiteboard. Has anyone seen anything like this in the open source community? Ideally, it would be web-based so that it would not be specific to any one client OS. Thanks, Bill

RedFlag Linux

by Andy Stewart

HI gang, I downloaded a copy of RedFlag Linux last night (straight from China) for a friend. I tried to run it on VMware, but it immediately wants to enable the frame buffer device and VMware doesn't seem to support that. On another old machine, it can't handle my ancient PAS16 SCSI controller as part of the installation process. I ran it part way on my laptop to get to the installation screen, so I know the CD works. (I have a low quality screenshot if anybody is interested). I'd be interested to see it running, even though I can't read Chinese. If anybody wants a copy, let me know and I'll make you one. Javascript Help

by Wesley Allen

Guys, My Javascript + dhtml has always been one great hack. And, unlike the other scripting languages I use (all open source) there just doesn't seem to be a great "javascript community" on the web. Just lots of free samples (yes, i've googled, maybe not enough). Here's my problem. I've got a table and I want one column to be used to display the different links in each area. If I mouse over "about us" I want the other table to display the links for that area. when I do this outside a table, I just create a bunch of <div>'s that are hidden, and just Javascript to make them visible and raise their z-index at the proper time (yes, terrible hack, my javascript sucks). In the table, I'm not sure how to "stack" the different <div>'s. I though relative positioning would do the trick, because the parent for all of the <div>'s should be the <td> tag, but instead the <div>'s relatively position to one another. So, I'm kinda stuck. Any help you can give would be great, web sites with tutorials are great too. Pre-made scripts are ok, but I'm actually trying to learn something here. Thanks, Wes

To answer question 2... A search for "null modem cable" on google will give you lots of good hits. For local kernel debug, you might just need to connect: Athlon Mac ground to ground txd to rxd rxd to txd If that is not enough, handshaking might require additional connections. There are variations, but I have had success, in other applications, with this handshaking setup: dtr to cd & dsr cd & dsr to dtr rts to cts cts to rts On a 9-pin connector: 1 = cd 2 = rxd 3 = txd 4 = dtr 5 = ground 6 = dsr 7 = rts 8 = cts 9 = ri You can probably buy a null modem cable at radio shack. It might also be sold as a lap-link serial cable. Be sure that the sex (protruding pins vs. recepticle) of the connector on the cable matches that on the computer you will connect to. Robert N. You need to setup virtual hosting. I don't actually use the RH default sendmail (I roll my own), but I believe the default one already has virtual hosting enabled. What you'd need to do is: 1) Edit /etc/mail/local-host-names and add "host1.com" and "host2.com" (this should already be done actually.) 2) Edit /etc/mail/virtusertable and add: @host1.com error:nouser User unknown sales(a)host1.com user1 @host2.com error:nouser User unknown sales(a)host2.com user2 3) cd /etc/mail && make Theoretically, that should be all you need to do. You can test via "sendmail -bv". For instance: "sendmail -bv 'theo(a)vandinter.org'" returns "theo(a)vandinter.org... deliverable: mailer local, user felicity" for me. You'll need to do more work if virtusertable isn't already configured for your sendmail. What I am trying to setup is this: sales(a)host1.com forwards to user1's inbox sales(a)host2.com forwards to user2's inbox Is this possible with sendmail? I've trid doing it in the /etc/aliases file and had no luck. when I run the newaliases command it gives me a warning and it doesn't work corectly when I tested it. I would prefer not to have to install qmail or some other mail server. -- ¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø Karl Hiramoto <karl(a)hiramoto.org> Work: 978-425-2090 ext 25 Cell: 508-517-4819 Personal web page: http://karl.hiramoto.org/ Zoop Productions: http://www.zoop.org/ KTEQ Rapid City: http://www.kteq.org/ AOL IM ID = KarlH420 Yahoo_IM = karl_hiramoto ¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø Q: What's the difference between a dead dog in the road and a dead lawyer in the road? By default, the NFS server "squashes" root privileges for security. If it didn't, then the server would be completely open to attack by insecure NFS clients. Imagine copying a setuid shell to an NFS share from a client as root, and then logging into the server as a normal user and gaining root by running that shell you just copied there... You should use another user to access the files, or put them into a group and give group read/write access. If you REALLY want to run an insecure NFS setup, you can turn off root squashing by adding an option to /etc/exports on the server: /exported/directory 192.168.0.1(ro,no_root_squash) For read-only access, this isn't so bad. -- Charles R. On the server, what are the user:groups assigned? Do you have the same user/group created on each server/workstation with the same UID and GID? Just a couple of things to think about.
