hardware problem?

by avedis＠ma.ultranet.com

I just had trouble booting into linux. Tried several times, but kept getting a blank screen, so I booted windoze. I noticed that I saw nothing on the screen until I got to my windows desktop, so I tried booting to linux again, and waited for my hard drive light to stop. Then I logged in with a blank screen, called up X, and it came up fine. Any ideas why my startup screen is missing? I haven't tried going into my bios yet, to see if it comes up on the screen. I'm not sure I remember how to get out of the bios on this machine, so I'm a little hesitant to go there. I'm not sure how to proceed, so any ideas are welcome. Athlon 1.2G, Spacewalker AK12A motherboard, ELSA GLoria L vid card, Viewsonic A70 monitor, 256RAM. I've got another computer here, so I could try switching monitors (not tonight). Thanks. Greg

I think it is perfectly reasonable to limit posting to the list to list members only. I would prefer not to have to do that, but I really don't want the spam. Hypothetically speaking, what stops folks like this from subscribing, posting their garbage, and then unsubscribing? Are the spam generating robots that smart? I knew this would happen eventually. Perhaps we should consider ourselves lucky that it hasn't been more prevalent. Hopefully, Chuck and others can track this down and get it stopped (at least at this one source). Alternately, if we don't want to go that route, I've developed a small set of tools (procmail/some perl/spamassassin) to filter out spam from mailing lists. It was written for use with majordomo, but it's generic enough that it should work with most any mailing list software. One of these days I'll actually finish the article I was writing about it. :| It doesn't catch 100% of the spam, but it does catch the vast majority, including the one that got through. Thanks, Charles. If we don't normally get serious email from people off the list, then it seems reasonable for us to only allow list members to post. I assumed that's how it already was. Re: [Wlug] spam with header

by Charles R. Anderson

And now I just received this same spam... Indeed it did come through wlug. We could prevent this sort of thing by only allowing subscribers of the list to post to the list. How does everyone feel about that? I usually look up the IP address in the Received line of the most trusted mail server (usually the one closest to the destination, in this case smtp.wpi.edu) Don't rely on the hostname, always use the bracketed IP address, and look it up in the ARIN whois database: Received: from chat.ru ([194.143.190.11]) by smtp.WPI.EDU (8.12.5/8.12.5) with SMTP id g5UB46wx028128 > whois 194.143.190.11(a)whois.arin.net This reveals that the owner of that IP address isn't in the Americas (ARIN), but in Europe (RIPE), so you have to look it up again. (For Asian hosts look it up again in APNIC, whois.apnic.net) > whois 194.143.190.11(a)whois.ripe.net For RIPE hosts, I usually complain to the admin-c: and tech-c: e-mail: addresses: jonr(a)hedgehognet.co.uk noc(a)uk.xo.com tc(a)uk.concentric.com In this case, the e-mail addresses don't look like generic abuse contacts, so I tried abuse@ their domains first: abuse(a)hedgehognet.co.uk abuse(a)uk.xo.com abuse(a)uk.concentric.com (For virus e-mails I use security@domain.) If those bounce, then I'll try the real e-mail addresses. Lindows was supposed to be a linux distro that ran windows and linux applications. it was supposed to support all of windows in a linux environment without any hassle. the idea was to make linux for masses. with this distro, linux could finally break into the desktop market (at least the part of the market owned by the masses who dont know shit about linux, or even windows). well it hasnt worked out for them ;) wine (which is what lindows relys heavilty upon) still isnt to the point where it can emulate windows programs for the masses w/out the masses realizing they arent running windows. never heard of Lycoris -mike ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andy Stewart" <andystewart(a)attbi.com> To: "Worcester Linux Users' Group" <wlug(a)mail.wlug.org> Sent: Thursday, June 27, 2002 17:56 Subject: [Wlug] What are Lindows and Lycoris? > > HI all, > > Walmart is selling ultra-cheap PCs with Lindows on them (the PC is by > Microtel). What are Lindows and Lycoris?

by Andy Stewart

HI all, Walmart is selling ultra-cheap PCs with Lindows on them (the PC is by Microtel). The screen shots look alot like KDE. Lindows makes software available for download on their website (the apps, not the OS) for a fee. I've also seen Lycoris, and on their website, they make passing references to Redmond Linux. So, I ask the question, are these just some version of Linux "packaged for the masses"? If not, what are they? Are there other similar products besides Lindows and Lycoris? Lilo :-)

by doug waud

Hi all On the TV lately I have heard a lot about Lilo. It seems to be in the context of something called Stitch. I am not clear on the details but Stitch apparently is some sort of extraterrestial with a bent to destroying everything it encounters. I assume the reference is, therefore, to Microsoft. The interesting thing about Lilo is that it never seems to be spelled LILO. The first letter is captialized so I assume there is some degree of case sensitivity involved. If any of you can decipher what all of this means perhaps you could fill me in! :-) I do notice that Disney seems to be involved so it would seem that Pixar is not the only place Linux seems to be making inroads. doug

RE: [Wlug] Installing Redhat on HP machines

by Hemstreet, Jeffrey

Thank you all for your help.... just wanted to let you know the outcome of the installs... On the HP Vectra, there appears to be some hardware issues, as Windows 2K boot floppy fails with a Boot I/O Error. This machine has been suspect, and I will probably scavenge it for parts (CD, Memory) (It has had some intermittent problems finding the HDD.) On the HP Kayak..... it's UP! I downloaded the new boot disk image from the email below, and the install ran without a hitch. It must not like the 7.2 standard boot image since it failed both from the install disk and from the boot floppy I made straight from the CDROM. (This was a CD burned from the WLUG installfest in February and it has installed faithfully on about a dozen machines.) Thank you again. jeff -----Original Message----- From: Charles R. It depends. Does the signal 11 always happen at exactly the same point? If so, that doesn't necessarily point to flakey hardware, but rather a software bug. If it IS random, then it does sound like a memory error. You can test your RAM with memtest86, available here: http://www.memtest86.com/ Another thing you can try is making sure the amount of memory is detected correctly by Linux (check the boot up messages of the Linux kernel). If not, you can force the correct amount by appending the mem option to the linux boot command line: linux updates mem=56M You need the "updates" bit to use the update-disk mentioned earlier. Insert the updates disk when it asks. jhemstreet> The other is a dual-300 PII HP Kayak with a SCSI Drive. Bad floppy disk and/or CD-ROM? How did you acquire your Red Hat 7.2 CD-ROM? If it isn't an official disk, then it might have been burned incorrectly. Red Hat recommends burning ISO's in Disk-At-Once mode, and checking the images and disks with md5sum to be sure they burned correctly. -- Charles R. Ah, the Aviion, AKA Nova II. I was working at DG as a computer operator when they took the plunge with UNIX. I remember the hype about the power of the Aviion line and I was totally blown away the first time I used X on DG/UX-Aviion (First exposure to UNIX in general, actually). Giant workstation screen. Beautiful graphics. I clicked an icon, and no less than 30 seconds, and xterm appeared! :-) -- Gary On Tue, 25 Jun 2002, Bill Mills-Curran wrote: > I had a problem that sounds similar when installing on a Data General > Aviion (old, slow) machine. I'd get read errors on the IDE CDROM while trying to install Mandrake 8.2, after many failed install attempts, I finally got it to the part where it was actually installing RPM's, and it would go very slowly, with frequent read errors that caused about a third of the packages to fail to install. The system would boot, but wasn't much good beyond that. Putting a SCSI CDROM drive in helped some, though the install was still dog slow due to read errors, and bombed twice. Maybe it needs ECC memory or some BIOS tweaking, or maybe it's a SCSI driver issue? I really have no idea, I just know mine has been a pain in the ass too!
