Email Addresses & Spam

by Marc Hughes

Is there any way of getting the email addresses in our mailing list archive removed? I've been getting a bunch of spam lately to hughesm(a)tomsnyder.com ... I just figured out that it was coming from a web spider (the damned fools attached their mailing list to the spam, and it said where it was from!) and the only place I can find that address posted is on the WLUG pages. Archive: http://mail.wlug.org/pipermail/wlug/ Anyone else get the "BUSINESS ASSISTANCE" from "kabila [lmkcg(a)yahoo.com]" a bunch of times today? -Marc

samba thanks & xmms Q

by Bill Mills-Curran

First, thanks to those who sent suggestions on how to solve my samba configuration problems. My Win98 box is happily using file and print shares from my linux box. (Too bad SANE does not have drivers for the scanner cartridge on my Canon printer. <sigh>) A new question. I tried getting the equalizer on xmms to control the output while playing audio CD's (not MP3's). The volume control on the main window works, and the playlist window works, but the equalizer doesn't. What's the trick? TIA, Bill

Event: Informal Q & A with Richard Stallman Date: Wednesday October 16, 2002 Time: 6:30 PM to about 8:00 PM Location: Softpro Books Vinebrook Plaza 112 Burlington Mall Road Burlington, MA 01803-5300 Tel: 781-273-2917 Web: http://www.softpro.com/ Description of "Free Software, Free Society": The intersection of ethics, law, business and computer software is the subject of this collection of essays and speeches by MacArthur Foundation Grant winner, Richard M. Stallman. It includes historical writings such as The GNU Manifesto, which defined and launched the activist Free Software Movement, along with new writings on current topics such as "trusted computing" and the proposed CBDTPA. Stallman takes a critical look at common abuses of copyright law and patents when applied to computer software programs, and how these abuses damage our entire society and remove our existing freedoms. He also discusses the social aspects of software and how free software can create community and social justice. Over the past twenty years Stallman's arguments and actions have changed the course of software history. Over the years he has received many types of awards; most recently he was elected to the American National Academy of Engineering. Best Regards, Lisa M. As a former Tech Support Slave, tinkering with the registry of any Microsoft product is akin to hand editing your compressed kernel image... I'm not saying you can't do it, I just wouldn't.. Plus, any encryption (even microsoft) encryption is better than no encryption any day... Add this line in the global section of your smb.conf file and the world will be a happier place. encrypt passwords = yes Oh, and this works with every version of windows... By default, Windows uses encrypted passwords for SMB, and at this point the default Samba configurations for most Linux installations set up encrypted passwords on the Samba server. There's no need for this anymore, and plaintext passwords are not a good idea to begin with (even if it's not encrypted that well). Brian J. Mr Linux basks in the limelight

by Karl Hiramoto

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/2300267.stm Linus Torvalds has revealed he is happy to be the poster boy for the anti-Microsoft campaign but would not know what to say if he met Bill Gates. Talking to BBC World ClickOnline at his home in Silicon Valley, the inventor of the Linux operating system admitted that he has never been in the same room with his arch-rival. "We have been at the same conferences but never in the same room. I wouldn't know what to say to him," he told ClickOnline. Mr Torvalds enjoys the notoriety he has achieved as the man that challenged the Microsoft empire with his open source alternative operating system. *Rising to the challenge "In a way it is fun. I'm pleased to be a poster boy. It gives me some self-importance," he said. He would not, however, want to become personally involved in the dispute with Microsoft. "I've tried to stay out of the Microsoft debate. If you start doing things because you hate others and want to screw them over the end result is bad," he said. The main reason he developed Linux in the first place had as much to do with wanting a challenge as being fed up with an operating system that would not do what he wanted it to. Like most technology projects it ran way over the time allotted to it and, to this day, is not truly finished. "It was a lot harder than I expected. I thought, like most of my projects, it would talk half a year and then I'd lose interest," he said. To the relief of his legion of followers he did persevere and eleven years on is still working on it. Reluctance to change While Linux is gradually gaining ground on Microsoft it might well not be suitable for everyone, Mr Torvalds admitted. "Most people don't want to change. They may hate Windows but they run it despite that because, quite frankly, they don't care about computers," he said. And even those that do care, often install Linux without much idea of what they want it to do, he said. Mr Torvalds is not convinced that the open source movement, which has radically altered both the operating system landscape and the mindset of Microsoft itself, will ever entirely topple the Gates empire. "I think, in the end, Linux will be a big part of why it happens but Microsoft is not going to shrink into nothingness in the foreseeable future," he said. Instead it is more likely that Microsoft will become like IBM - "still huge but not the dominant force anymore", he said. The world of coding is beginning to lose importance as Mr Torvalds, ubergeek, admits he has finally found a balance between work and play. *Uber-geek grows up "I have a life too. I have kids now. Linux has been a big part of my life but now I want to have my own time," he told ClickOnline. He revealed that he is more likely to have childrens' parties with bouncy castle and candyfloss than to have a bunch of programmers round. "Part of doing Linux was that I had to communicate a lot more instead of just being a geek in front of a computer. "It has made me more used to talking to people. I still like coding but I have other things to do," he said. Although his followers would dispute it, Mr Torvalds is not convinced the phenomenon of Linux has made him entirely cool. "No-one has ever called me a cool dude. I'm somewhere between geek and normal," he said. -- ¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø Karl Hiramoto <karl(a)hiramoto.org> Work: 978-425-2090 ext 25 Cell: 508-517-4819 Personal web page: http://karl.hiramoto.org/ Zoop Productions: http://www.zoop.org/ KTEQ Rapid City: http://www.kteq.org/ AOL IM ID = KarlH420 Yahoo_IM = karl_hiramoto ¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø When this load is DONE I think I'll wash it AGAIN ...

RE:[Wlug] Red Hat 8.0

by joel jones

Earlier this week I installed a minimalist configuration of RH 8.0 on my old Thinkpad 365XD (P133/40MB/6GB). The configuration works fine except for being slow due to lack of processor and memory (40 MB RAM is max'd). The only snag I ran into was a hang on install just before the first RPM installs. The machine locked up there twice during the text install. I found this lockup only happened to me doing a "custom" install and not the "workstation" install. RH 8.0 does seem improved over RH 7.X in terms of the quality of fonts and GUI mods. I also found more things I could quickly disable features to make life bearable on this old hardware (wallpaper, menu icons, etc). Unfortunately, I have not tried other distributions yet and cannot intelligently compare them to RH 7.X or 8.0. My next step is to find a very small window manager to hopefully make this machine perform reasonably in X. Currently I am considering replacing the default Gnome with either IceWM and Enlightenment. If you want to use qmail, I've always found "Life With Qmail" to be particulary handy. http://www.lifewithqmail.org/lwq.html -JP
