Well, without rebuilding them, that is :) Typically, you would install locally built packages in /usr/local, while the official packages would live in the standard /usr prefix. -- Josh Huber

The problem I see is when you go out and buy a PC, blowout the partitions that have "longhorn" (MS's next OS) and install linux, reboot the machine and get this error at the POST screen: "TCPA Error: BOOT DEVICE DOES NOT CONTAIN VALID BOOT KEY" I don't see the people building the whole DRM infrastructure giving out details on how to change keys since their whole authentication infrastructure is based around the idea that every machine has a unique key so they can track things on a PC by PC basis. In their view, the idea of installing an operating system that doesn't have DRM built into it at the kernel level is an unacceptable option. The only way for DRM to be effective is to have a say in every action on your machine. Start an application and "DRM" verifies that the application is allowed to run on the machine. Insert a piece of media and "DRM" verifies that your allowed to access it. Go to a particular website and "DRM" decides if your allowed to access said website... On the privacy side of this, what's to keep the whole infrastructure from also keeping detailed info on what apps/media/peripheral/websites you access. Yeah, you could opt out of it, but by not opting in, your PC becomes utterly crippled, unable to play DVD's (since it can't verify authenticity), unable to run verified apps, etc... I see all kinds of other very onerous privacy issues with this... XFree86 SMP Woes

by Marc Hughes

I just installed a second processor, installed an SMP kernel, and booted into it. At first, everything seemed great, I can do massive compiles, top shows both CPU's, and things go pretty zippy. BUT... I can't start X. This is what startx gives me: XFree86 Version 4.2.0 (Red Hat Linux release: 4.2.0-8) / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600) Release Date: 23 January 2002 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems. I'm guessing the whole not being able to bind the AGP is the really bad part. I booted into the single CPU kernel, and X still works fine there. Any ideas? -Marc

sendmail/RH8.0

by Bill Mills-Curran

After upgrading to RedHat 8.0, I'm being forced to learn more about sendmail that I have time to invest, so I need some help. Previously, I had used linuxconf to set up Linux server at work (EMC) that would forward most email to the domain mail server -- I'm not trying to manage mail for the company. One twist... I want to define a few aliases. My linuxconf setup worked great -- I could send email to aliasname(a)thismachine.emc.com, and the /etc/alias file would be used to translate "aliasname" to a list of addresses. With the new split sendmail config, I'm floundering. I've made a few tweaks that were necessary to allow the machine to act as an internal relay (I need some security help here, too), but I'm still fighting a mail loop problem. So, here are my specific questions/requirements: 1. I want to send to an alias on "thismachine.emc.com" from anywhere inside emc. 2. I want the same aliases to be used for email originating from "thismachine". 3. I don't want to create a relay security hole. I'll send my sendmail.mc and submit.mc files upon request. TIA, Bill
