RE: [Wlug] Newbie to mailing list- Issue with the generation of graphs in redhat 6.2

Hi Tim, Thanks for the reply. The version of JDK differ the version I'm having issues with is 1.3.1_01 and the ones the code is running successfully is 1.3.0_02, however the graphs were being produced before. The following is the Weblogic log which I'd appreciate if you can look at and tell what could be the issue in your view: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError at java.lang.Class.forName0(Native Method) at java.lang.Class.forName(Class.java:120) at java.awt.GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment(GraphicsEnvironment.java:58) at java.awt.Window.<init>(Window.java:189) at java.awt.Frame.<init>(Frame.java:315) at java.awt.Frame.<init>(Frame.java:262) at com.rivenet.graphingaction.Graphit.runGraph2D(Unknown Source) at com.rivenet.reporting.InformalFundingComparisonGraph.makeGraph(Unknown Source) at jsp_servlet._plan._Model_controller._jspService(_Model_controller.java:356) at weblogic.servlet.jsp.JspBase.service(JspBase.java:27) at weblogic.servlet.internal.ServletStubImpl.invokeServlet(ServletStubImpl.java:123) at weblogic.servlet.internal.ServletContextImpl.invokeServlet(ServletContextImpl.java:761) at weblogic.servlet.internal.ServletContextImpl.invokeServlet(ServletContextImpl.java:708) at weblogic.servlet.internal.ServletContextManager.invokeServlet(ServletContextManager.java:252) at weblogic.socket.MuxableSocketHTTP.invokeServlet(MuxableSocketHTTP.java:346) at weblogic.socket.MuxableSocketHTTP.execute(MuxableSocketHTTP.java:246) at weblogic.kernel.ExecuteThread.run(ExecuteThread.java:135) I've done some reading and feel that awt uses X-windows and I think that might be broken. The original screensaver just blanked the screen when the terminal was not in use, to prvent the login: prompt from getting burnt into the phosphors. Good idea, but it was hard to tell if the power was on, so somebody had the idea of displaying a small randomly bouncing spot. You could see it was on, but it was still mostly black and no place got burnt by a static image. After that, it has been straight downhill. I've never purposely installed a screen saver, though I suspect that the amount of disk space wasted by the ones that get installed by default exceeds the total amount of space on all disks I used at my first three jobs. There's a classic Dilbert cartoon: PHB: We need a program to track the inventory, print bills and invoices, schedule manufacturing, and ensure that our customers can track the progress of their orders. Dilbert: That sound pretty difficult, what if I write a program that shows pictures of fish swimming around the computer screen? PHB: OK, do that. People like that, too. -- Keith

Peram, I'll ask an obvious question... You've verified that both machines running the same version of the java run time environment? Also, does the entire applet fail or does it just fail to display the graph. If so, you might have to insert some code to catch exceptions... Possibly some library has gotten mangled... Hope that helps, Tim. -----Original Message----- From: Sudhaker P [mailto:perams27@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, October 29, 2002 14:35 PM To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org Subject: [Wlug] Newbie to mailing list- Issue with the generation of graphs in redhat 6.2 Hi , I've a program that generates graphs with Java 1.3.1_01. I remember having noseguy as a screensaver option back at WPI, on the garden lab terminals and the CCC ("Buckaroo Bonzai") lab DECstations, and that would've been around 1995 or so... IIRC, it's a black background, with a white (green?) little cartoon character that's basically a big nose with little feet. The little noseguy walks a little bit across the screen, stops, and a little ponder bubble appears above his "head" that displays something from the fortune file. The xscreensaver package that includes noseguy is available here: http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/ A "screenshot" of noseguy is available here: http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/screenshots.html According to this page, the noseguy for xscreensaver was extracted out of xnlock . According to: http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/faq.html#fortune <quote> Where does the text for those silly quotes come from? Some of the xscreensaver display modes (phosphor, noseguy, etc.) run another program to generate text, which is then displayed in some fancy way. Usually that program is fortune (generally found at /usr/games/fortune.) To change which program a specific xscreensaver hack runs to generate text, put something like this in your ``~/.Xdefaults'' file: phosphor.program: /usr/games/fortune See the man page for fortune for how to customize the text that it generates. </quote> So, my guess is that the original question was really how to customize the text that fortune spits out... -- --==*==-- --==*==-- Michelle R. I found that http://www.practicallynetworked.com/ as a good site with review on DSL/Cable routers and home wireless equipment. www.homepna.org was another good site for home networks. But if you were looking at basic information such as installing NIC card and Ethernet Basics. Microsoft Press has a Network book; Cisco Press has a Network book. Both book are the basis for each's Cert Exam Curriculum. You must make sure that they, too, receive or can get the source code. And you must show them these terms so they know their rights.

The term "Linux", strictly speaking, refers to the core of the operating system, that is, the part which "talks" directly to the computer hardware. Having this ability is necessary but insufficient to do useful work on the computer. You need programs such as word processors, windowing environments, etc, etc. There are many groups of people (including companies) who have gathered together a large amount of software (including the Linux kernel) with the hope of having enough software to enable most people to do useful work (or have fun!!) with Linux. Some of these companies are RedHat, SuSE, and Mandrake (there are many others). Groups of people which are not companies include Debian. A collection of software which includes the Linux kernel that is distributed by a group of people is referred to as a Linux "distribution". There are many long discussions about which distribution is the best. There is no correct answer, just alot of opinions. In the United States, RedHat and Mandrake appear to be the most commonly used, while in Europe, SuSE has a large following. It is truly difficult to know which is most commonly used since the software can be downloaded from the Internet and counting downloads is not a reliable way to gauge the number of users as some users might download multiple times (for software upgrades, as an example). I look back and see I've written perhaps more than you wished to know, but I hope you find it helpful. Building RH7.3 server after 7.0 hacked

by Richard Goodman

As some of you may recall from a mid-week email, two of my RH7.0 servers were badly hacked Tuesday about 5AM, and I lost ssh and think I received a trojan. Friday the hacking got worse - all outgoing mail was rejected as "relaying denied", so I decided to bite the bullet and format the drive and build a new server. This was made more interesting by the fact the RH7.3 wouldn't finish loading packages until I disconnected my second HD which previously held /var, and my web sites (tried 3-4 times) .. "Kernel unable to reread partition table on /tmp/hdc (device or resource busy)", then hung mid-package loading. Late Saturday afternoon I pulled the plug, and started a RH7.3 install. Midmorning I was done, including security patches and had no internet connection .. couldn't even ping from the server. Fortunately, it was just my ISP picking this time to be down for the first time in months. Now I have one remaining problem which over 8 hours of work has clarified, but not solved. For background, I have the just rebuilt RH7.3 server (A), and two other recently built RH7.3 servers (B) and (C) at a different location and each with its own static IP#, all running sendmail for one or several domains From A - incoming mail seems to be fine From A - I can send mail locally to several domain names that are on the A server From A - I can send email (such as this) out into the world Through A - I have several email addresses which are accessed by others from outside and send mail to another outside address in virtusertable or to an alias which is a list of outside addresses, and these are working From A - I cannot send mail to any of the domains at B or C When I try, I get this on the A sendmail log: Oct 27 19:02:56 bach sendmail[3693]: g9S02uO03693: from=<dick(a)goodman1.net>, size=316, class=0, nrcp ts=1, msgid=<p04310101b9e23f71eb3e(a)%5B192.168.1.9%5D>, proto=ESMTP, daemon=MTA, relay=host9.goodman1.net [192.168.1.9] Oct 27 19:03:02 bach sendmail[3695]: g9S02uO03693: SYSERR(root): 11harvard.com. config error: mail l oops back to me (MX problem?) Hello, I have a ADSL modem. This modem containa DHCP server that I use. In my computer, I have dhcp client daemon (dhcpcd). The parameter of dhcp server is juste lease-time and IP adresse, but I would like to set a name of my computer and kown the name and IP adresse of other computer. If I configure a DDNS for make it, it's not a problem. How-to configure a DDNS updatefrom a dhcp server not configurable ? Thanks !

noseguy text

by reavey

I'm a new member. I'm an elem. librarian in NE, Pa. near Binghamton,ny I just got approval and installed a linux box in our library to run a couple of demo programs worldwatch clock simulator and kstars. In screen saver I now run phosphores, which I have written text for using echo and printf in a bash shell. I would like to use noseguy but don't understand how it works?? I have read it likes to run fortunes, and yet when I use either the text files or .dat it won't read.Permission denial, chmod 777== can't execute binary?? Regular text files are not parsed and it deadlocks. What do you think? Should I write a program in python to parse a text file(out of my ken). There is probably something stupid I can't see TIA Re-v
