Hi to you Andy too! Thank you for fast reply. I actually already got Microsoft Linux installed! It was very easy I am still having some questions though. I can't get on the internet, what is wrong? My Digital camera does not work either, why not? Also, now that we are such good friends, I would like to tell you about my late father who has recently died in Nigeria. Building RH7.3 server after 7.0 hacked

As some of you may recall from a mid-week email, two of my RH7.0 servers were badly hacked Tuesday about 5AM, and I lost ssh and think I received a trojan. Friday the hacking got worse - all outgoing mail was rejected as "relaying denied", so I decided to bite the bullet and format the drive and build a new server. This was made more interesting by the fact the RH7.3 wouldn't finish loading packages until I disconnected my second HD which previously held /var, and my web sites (tried 3-4 times) .. "Kernel unable to reread partition table on /tmp/hdc (device or resource busy)", then hung mid-package loading. Late Saturday afternoon I pulled the plug, and started a RH7.3 install. Midmorning I was done, including security patches and had no internet connection .. couldn't even ping from the server. Fortunately, it was just my ISP picking this time to be down for the first time in months. Now I have one remaining problem which over 8 hours of work has clarified, but not solved. DHCPCD and ADSL modem

The parameter of dhcp server is juste lease-time and IP adresse, but I would like to set a name of my computer and kown the name and IP adresse of other computer. If I configure a DDNS for make it, it's not a problem. How-to configure a DDNS updatefrom a dhcp server not configurable ? Thanks !

noseguy text

I'm a new member. I'm an elem. librarian in NE, Pa. near Binghamton,ny I just got approval and installed a linux box in our library to run a couple of demo programs worldwatch clock simulator and kstars. In screen saver I now run phosphores, which I have written text for using echo and printf in a bash shell. I would like to use noseguy but don't understand how it works?? I have read it likes to run fortunes, and yet when I use either the text files or .dat it won't read.Permission denial, chmod 777== can't execute binary?? Regular text files are not parsed and it deadlocks. What do you think? Should I write a program in python to parse a text file(out of my ken). There is probably something stupid I can't see TIA Re-v

What it sounds like to me is that there's two installations of SuSE on that machine, possibly. I use a similar setup due to laziness myself, where I have Lilo running on the Master Boot Record for /dev/hda, controlling which actual partition gets booted, then I have a bootloader like grub or lilo set up on each individual partition to boot that partition's OS. This enables me to run one disk sharing Debian and Win2K, and a second disk running Red Hat 8.0 (hdb1), SuSE 8.1 (coming soon to hdb2), and Gentoo (coming soon to hdb3). If you select Linux from the second boot menu that you get to, is it the same install that you have running now, or a different one? Either way though, it's basically a situation where there's one boot loader per hard drive that's causing it to happen. You could probably, with a little tinkering, get that second menu to go away by setting Windows to the default option and setting timer to 0, but it's probably not worth the effort.

Take a look at /etc/lilo.conf I expect you will see a line message=/boot/message and, if you try to cat /boot/message you will see gibberish (i.e. it is not ASCII but code for that SuSE window.) If you comment out/delete that message= line and then run lilo you should no longer see the SuSE stuff, If you wish, you can now add a line message=/boot/mymessage where mymessage is just a text file to echo whatever reminders you want at boot time. For example, I have used lines like for linux type l for windows type w (where my lilo.conf has lines label=l and label=w to match; I am lazy and like to type just one letter). Alternatively, you have no message= line and just use tab to list the options. doug

I have a backup script that uses tar to back up files to disk. It does a full backup monthly, full backup weekly(file recycled monthly), incremental backups daily(file recycled weekly). I've used BRU in the past. I'm not that excited about it. It seems bascly to be a GUI front end to TAR Most backup utils seem to be geared towards tapes. That doesn't satisfy my need for daily incremental backups. I just started using arkeia the other day, and I'm rather impressed so far. They give you a 2 client license of version 4.2 for free (so you can backup the server, and 2 linux or windows clients) if you're using a linux backup server. You can make backups to tape or disk with it. Plus it has a little bit of eye candy; while backups are running, you can log in with the gui client (java client that works on a bunch of platforms) and see the speed at which the backups are running in a speedometer style display ... Hey, what can I say, I like pretty things :) I'm not sure if this is feasible at all, but could you use software raid and mirror your normal disk to the removeable one?
