I've seen it working on other computers, a friend of mine at BU was using on an AI speech recognition project. They were just opening /dev/dsp and reading from it. Can't you find something on google to solve the issue? Doesn't work with SuSE 7.2 on a fast computer with the onboard soundcard, and it didn't work with Redhat 7.0 on a slow computer with my Ensonic sound card, either. I can record from CD at least three ways without any problem. And I can record from my stereo or from the microphone if I use a common proprietary operating system that's four years old. I suspect the problem is in the options section of /etc/modules.conf, but I've never pursued it, and I don't know what any of those options mean. There's a mailing list for the ALSA project, and I've gotten good help from them in the past. They might know. I'll show you my modules.conf if you'll show me yours. DNS Resolve from the Internet

Hello: Please help me get this straight. I am confused. I have a dnscache running at home on a DMZ network. I would like to know if I can have friends on other networks (in the Internet) to use my server as their resolver server? I have a firewall in place but, I'm directing all the udp traffic to port 53 to my dns-server; also my dnscache server is accepting connections from those networks ip's. Can I do this or do I need to register ($$$$$) a the dns-server? Hi all After the neglegible turnout of "customers" for our most recent installfest there was some discussion aa to whether the day of the installfest is past and we should look for other ways to serve the community. In this context I found this morning's (Oct 31) T&G had an interesting article which may provice a template for what we might now do. In a nutshell they described (pages A1 and A11) the Atlantic Paranormsl Society who for the past 12 years send out teams to help people who are having trouble with "domestic disturbances like eerie noises and signs of spirit possession". Their website, http://the-atlantic-paranormal-society.com/ gets 6000 hits a day from around the world" (they do not say whether setag lib is among them). They do not charge for their "work" and say "the rich and poor both need help" and say "Also how can you charge for something that cannot be proved to exist" (which does not seem to stop Micro$oft!). They have about 25 regular members, consult with a network of similar groups and gather at an eatery (Starbucks, not the Boynton). I suggest that, if you can find today's T&G you read the article since I cannot do justice to it here. For example, I learned about the taxonomy: Hauntings Human Intelligent spirits (they talk) Residuals (leftover energies condemned to repeat one small action from their lives) Poltergeists ("usually the spirits of young girls which make a racket and and can wreak havoc on property values") Inhuman Demons Incubuses Succubi Nature spirits Angles Apparently the human variety are the more "benign" while the others "can be viscious and deceitful", says "Never believe anything you hear from an inhuman haunting". Apparently other groups often get in over their heads and haveto call in his crew to "clean things up". (This is getting long; check out the T&G if you do not wish to miss the full picture.) Now I realixe some of this may sound scary but we would have the advantage that we could send Keith in first to scare the spirits! :-) So, instead of instalfests we could adapt to the times and move into deinstallfests! doug

rpm lock-up

HELP! I seem to have done something very bad (SVB) to rpm. And, it seems to be painfully reproducible (I did it to two machines). Short explanation: 1. Do some rpm command (I was using "rpm -e", I think). 2. Ctrl-C out. You won't get the shell prompt back. Now, that user account can no longer do any rpm commands from any session -- it always hangs. You can kill -9 the existing rpm processes, but nothing I've tried helps until reboot. Longer explanation: 1. I wanted to upgrade a couple of packages: perl-GD and perl-Chart. I don't know where I got the old packages :-( , but I made some new ones of my own. 2. Instead of doing "rpm -F", I forgot that the perl modules were installed from an rpm in an older perl library area, and I deleted the module files (rm). (oops) (Is this clear?) 3. When attempting to install the new rpm's, I got error messages, so I tried "rpm -e" on the old package. That failed due to dependencies, so I added "--nodep" to the command. This was taking a long time (hung?), so I ctrl-c'ed out. Now all rpm commands (from the root account) hung. 4. I rebooted this morning. The rpm commands were working ok (at least "rpm -qa" worked), so I tried "rpm -F <packageFileName>" (as root), and it's hung. 5. From another window (also as root), "rpm -qa" hangs again. 6. From a different account, "rpm -qa" works fine. HELP! 1. How do I fix things and get my new packages in? 2. Is the database corrupted? 3. If the database is corrupted, how do I fix it? Thanks, Bill

Sendmail 8.11.6 (was building RH7.3 after hack)

I spent four hours on Google last night about this problem. Saw reports of the same messages, but not the same situation. SUMMARY: 3 separate servers upgraded from RH7.0 to RH7.3 - all can send/receive mail locally and to/from the outside world EXCEPT for/from each other - which was not a problem under RH7.0. Do not believe there are errors in config files, particularly /etc/mail/local-host-names, and I have read the part of the sendmail FAQ about "mail loops back to me" and it DOES NOT APPLY in this case. I've been through what sendmail documentation I can understand - can someone tell me what has changed somewhere prior to or at 8.11.6 which shipped with RH7.3 that might cause this? I have another identically hacked RH7.0 server which I hope to rebuild/upgrade tonight - it will be interesting to see if all FOUR servers have the same problem. I'm losing mail which is supposed to be forwarded between these servers. Dick

I believe (not sure!) that the change occurred in RedHat 7.3. 1. sendmail is broken up into 2 separate processes for security reasons. One is outgoing, the other is incoming. 2. /etc/sendmail.cf is no longer used. There are several files in /etc/mail to replace /etc/sendmail.cf. 3. The new *.cf files are generated from several macro-preprocessed files. You get to edit sendmail.mc and submit.mc. The documentation in /usr/share/doc/sendmail/README.cf is good, but long. 4. The *.cf files are generated by the macro files when you start the service. (See /etc/mail/Makefile.) 5. The file /etc/mail/access can define where your server will accept relay mail from. I used the access file to allow all my domain machines to be able to use my alias list. However, I suspect that I should be handling my aliases differently -- I haven't gotten around to figuring it out yet, but this now works. I wish I could help more, but I'm pretty green with sendmail. Bill

Redhat has RPMS for apache, php, and ssl that all play nice together. Use those unless you have some weird requirement where you absolutly need to build your own. BUT, make sure to download the updated SSL libraries from RedHat! The ones on the CD have a remote exploit in them that you will want to close. If you do NEED to compile your own apache, ssl, etc ... then there is this nifty project called "The apache toolbox" http://www.apachetoolbox.com/ which makes the process much much easier. Since it can be difficult getting all those to work right, I'd suggest trying that. I'd un-install all of the current apache stuff you have before doing that.

I've done these listed on my attachement step to install all my need.... -------------------------------------------------------- The results are like these both bellow...... 1. apache, php and its need runs well, but modssl and ssl are not workin'... ;( 2. apache with modssl is wrokin' fine, but the apache could not understand the php's need....... So, what is the correct step to get what i want.... What i want is only get apache, openssl,modssl,postgresql, and php's need installed....... Thanx.........

So you're saying that you can use X on the machine, right? If so, I'd look other places for the problem. Double check that your DISPLAY is set properly and access is enabled. This was the exact same error message I used to get when java couldn't connect to the xserver. Hi Marc, The KDE for the server was not working for it so I fixed it, removing all the rpms and re-installing them, I even reinstalled "gd".So I was wondering if any other libraries related to X-server were broken too. Thanks for usb help

Hi all, Thanks to everyone who tried to help me with my usb problems, it's always a pain when you know WHAT is wrong, but you don't know how to FIX it. Today I went to compUSA got their cheap-o usb2.0 cardbus card for $50, took it home and installed it. IT WORKS. So, when the next kernel fixes this apic promlem I'll have my 2 usb 1.1 ports AND 2 usb2.0 ports as well. I love linux sometimes, well, most times really. There is probably something stupid I can't see FYI: fortune has 2 files, the text file, and a "database" dat file which specifies how many fortunes there are, what offsets in the text file they're at, etc, etc. If you only edit the text file, fortune will get very confused. doing a "man strfile" will help you out.
