Meeting over the Access Grid?

by Frank Sweetser

As a few of you may already know, WPI has just recently installed an Access Grid Node. For those of you who have never heard of the Access Grid project, it's a completely immersive video conferencing system - like traditional videoconferencing, but arranged such that the technology portion becomes invisible, and you can converse with others as if they were in the same room. More details at http://www.accessgrid.org/ My idea was that if we could find a couple of remote sites with people who might be interested in joining us, we could have a meeting over the Access Grid. A list of other Access Grid sites is up at http://www-fp.mcs.anl.gov/fl/accessgrid/nodes.htm and includes BU at least. If anyone knows anyone else at any of these sites who would be interested, we can start seeing about scheduling the time needed in all of the spaces. -- Frank Sweetser fs at wpi.edu WPI Network Engineer

Educational Linux ... WAS: REMINDER: Upcoming LAN Party !!

by Marc Hughes

Speaking about linux in education ... I work for Tom Snyder Productions (a Scholastic company) (www.tomsnyder.com) we make Educational software for schools. Recently we started using a toolkit for windows/mac portability that also happens to have every kind of unix support you could want. (you can probably guess what toolkit it is). So us geeky engineers have been pushing for a linux port, even if it's an unsupported port. So we went to customer service to see how many linux requests there were ... 0, zero, nadda, zilch. And we have a very in-depth customer relations database, every call gets logged. We asked around a bit, and found that it probably wouldn't work. It seems schools using linux are usually doing it because they are trying to save every penny. Kind of hard to sell software to schools like that. But at least we found out there's a lot of linux fileservers out there, so we're QA'ing serving our network products from them. (you'd be surprised at the wide varriances in file-locking between servers & protocols!) So I guess the moral of the story, call you congressmen ... Err... Um...call your software vendors, you never know when they might be listening. Oh well, -Marc -----Original Message----- From: wlug-admin(a)mail.wlug.org [mailto:wlug-admin@mail.wlug.org] On Behalf Of Stephen C. Please refer to the Wlug Meetings...Directions link for directions to this room. The building is right next to Salisbury Labs on the WPI campus. Please note the earlier start time of 6:00 PM ! At this meeting, we'll be having a LAN party ! This is WLUG's first LAN party so I'm curious to see what people bring. You'll need to bring your network gear (hubs, switches, cables) and a laptop or desktop machine with networking enabled. We'll interconnect all of the machines to create one big WLUG LAN. I'll bring my PLIP cable for the masochists in the crowd. This network most likely will *not* have access to the Internet (but we'll see what we can do). On this LAN, all sorts of activities could take place, such as multiplayer games, network security scans, attempts to (non-destructively!) crack another persons system to teach them about their security weaknesses, and more. Its really up to all of you and your imaginations as to what we can do with this type of setup. I'll even entertain doing a couple of network based Linux installations if folks want that. If people need help configuring their systems for networking, that help will be available. I'll also be available to do a demonstration of VNC for those interested. The possibilities are really endless. Due to the amount of time to setup such a LAN and still have time to have fun with it, I've extended the time of the WLUG meeting from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM (note earlier start time!). I'd suspect that because the thing came with windows drivers that it looks close enough to an MSDOS filesystem that windows won't scream so much, but when it comes to actually interacting with the filesystem/toc on the device it's nothing like that at all... Can you fdisk the device and format it? RE: [Wlug] Sony floppy disk memory stick adapter

by Doug Geiger

I think this is related to the FlashPath - the SmartMedia floppy adapter (same idea - slightly different media). I vaguely recall trying to get the binary-only smartdisk module to work - and having some success. According to the press release (http://linuxpr.com/releases/1968.html) - LinuxCare developed the driver - which may also work with the memory stick version. Can't seem to find anyplace to actually download it from though. It was developed for Red Hat 6.1 - kernel 2.2.x - so even if you can find it, it probably won't work with anything recent. -- Doug Geiger runexe(a)bioradiation.net http://bioradiation.net/~runexe/ If you're crossing the nation in a covered wagon, it's better to have four strong oxen than 100 chickens. From the WPI Library Parking Lot to Atwater Kent 233: Go up the 103 stairs on the LEFT SIDE of the library until you reach the front entrance of the Gordon Library. When facing the library, turn left and walk on the road which goes slightly downhill. Salisbury Labs will be on your left. You will approach a building on your right called Fuller Labs. Go past that building. The road curves to the left. You will then see the Atwater Kent building on your right. Enter that building and go upstairs. AK233 is up there somewhere. Getting OpenOffice, ODBC and MySQL to play Nice

by Bill Smith

Okay... Most of you may already have heard of this (especially if you watch Slashdot), but it's worth posting for those that don't: http://www.linuxworld.com/2003/0207.barr.html Here, the author talks about getting OpenOffice.org, ODBC and MySQL working together (on Red Hat 8.0)... It looks like the first of two articles; the first explains what he did, the errors that resulted, and what he did to get around it. Next week, he's supposed to talk about using his new-found functionality, and whether it was worth the effort. FWIW, he said that he started using a how-to by John McCreesh, but there were enough differences between RH 7.3 and RH8.0 that it was almost useless. The article is certainly worth reading. floppy question

by Michelle Vadeboncoeur

I hope you guys don't mind a hardware-related question... The short of it is, if a floppy controller appears dead, short of getting a new motherboard how do I get a floppy drive to work on that system? I recently upgraded my home computer so that I could play the new game I got for Christmas... So, the usual course of events is to play hand-me-down computer parts in my family, so my old computer would go to upgrade my mother's computer (admittedly a Windows98 box, used for Juno email/web and playing Solitaire... so no heavy usage). My old box is old in computer terms, but it's a heck of a lot faster than the P200 that my mother currently has. I rarely used my floppy drive (the last time prior to taking that box down was a few months prior). When transferring files from my old box to my new computer, I needed to run a Windows app off of a floppy - and discovered that the floppy drive didn't work on my old box. I tried swapping the 3.5" floppy drive out for another one that I had lying around, and that one didn't work either... I also tried swapping out the floppy cables, and that didn't work. BIOS sees the 3.5" floppy drive, but the box won't boot off of a boot floppy (that is readable on other computers) or read anything off of the floppy drive (makes nasty searching sounds) when in Windows... So, my guess is that the floppy drive controller on the motherboard isn't working... My mother is adamant that she needs a working floppy drive (old files saved, and so she can transfer stuff from work to home and back). I'd really like to give her my old box for a nice CPU/RAM upgrade, but unless I can get it to use a 3.5" floppy drive, she won't take it... Any suggestions as to how I can get a floppy drive to work on my old box? Or am I just out of luck for upgrading her with my old box? -- --==*==-- --==*==-- Michelle R. by Charles R. Anderson

Be careful. OpenSSH has some features that could compromise your security. It lets the user set environment variables when the user connects. A user could upload a library and override C Library functions with LD_PRELOAD to execute whatever they want. There are a couple sftp-only shells that were designed to handle being used in the manner you want, but they caution you to disable the rc features in sshd_config or take other security precautions: http://www.pizzashack.org/rssh/security.shtml On Sat, Feb 08, 2003 at 03:51:38AM -0500, Brian K. Re: [Wlug] ssh-dummy-shell for OpenSSH???

by Brian K. White

I have sort-of got this by setting the shell to sftp-server. bizarre, I know, but it works, and a copy of /bin/true does not. in both the real and chroot'ed /etc/passwd's I set the shell to the full path to sftp-server, and sftp works, ssh does not. ssh actually connects and will sit there until you type something, but as soon as you type anything sftp-server says "what is this rubbish?" and promptly hangs up on you. I don't have any real shell, or any other binary besides sftp-server in my chroot tree, and even though users can upload their own, they cannot execute it because their shell is only sftp-server, which is not a shell and cannot execute anything. I hope it doesn't have any cases where it could execute any external program like ls (I know it doesn't need ls specifically, just as an example the way ftpd often uses a ls binary in the chroot path). otherwise a person might be able to upload a shell named <whatever sftp-server might exec> this is OpenSSH 3.5p1 with chroot patch, on SCO Open Server 5.0.6 ------------ Actually it does. I tried /bin/false and it fails to setup the ssh connection properly. I guess the shell will let sftp only run specific sftp commands, anything else causes it to exit. -----Original Message----- From: Scott Venier [mailto:scottven@umich.edu] Sent: Wednesday, January 30, 2002 10:58 AM To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org Subject: Re: [Wlug] ssh-dummy-shell for OpenSSH??? does the ssh-dummy-shell have to actually do anything for sFTP to work, or does it just have to be in /etc/shells? If it just has to be in /etc/shells, /bin/false works. Been using that for years for (non-s)FTP-only accounts. RE: [Wlug] Disable telnet and ssh, but ftp and email still enable !

by Keller, Tim

Aramico, I'm taking the guess that your users are using pop3 to access their email. If you set their shell to /bin/false this will allow them to access email and ftp, but they won't be able to login. Hope this helps, Tim. -----Original Message----- From: Aramico [mailto:aramico@duahati.com] Sent: Thursday, February 06, 2003 2:33 AM To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org Subject: [Wlug] Disable telnet and ssh, but ftp and email still enable! Hi all, I have several user in my linux machine. And now, I've just finished configure my qmail server. qmail only works for the user who has the home directory. by this, I've got to create several users with their directory if I want to create an email address for them. It's not secure! How can I make disable ssh and telnet to my user ? By this my user still can access the email and ftp, but can not login via telnet and ssh service. what configuration that I need to do ? Thanks Man.
