Hi all, Can you please tell me how can I make a line that will not proccessed in file named /etc/passwd. There are so many users in my machine, what I want to do is I want to clasisfication the user with a defined title, so by this, I can easily see where the user is according the definition that I'll make. Eg in file /etc/passwd I want to make like this # Europe - Jakarta # South Asia - Jakarta # Australia - Jakarta I want to put that words as comment in file /etc/passwd Can you friends tell me how to make it ? I can't help with the modem issue, other then to say make sure your flow control settings match. As for a distro, I'd recomend Debian. Use testing, stable is antique. SPARC and modems...

I have a SPARCstation 10 with RH 6.2 loaded. I am trying to get it configured as an Internet gateway, but the big hurdle I am trying to jump over right now is the modem communication. I have checked the PROM settings and they match what I am using minicom with: 57600-8N1. (I am trying to use minicom to debug serial connection with the modem.) When I send commands to the modem, I see the modem is getting information, but it doesn't look like the modem is responding. I don't see an OK reply, much less any other sign of life... The modem in question is a Zoom 56k (it is the one I usually use to connect to the 'Net with, and it has worked with Linux and my ISP flawlessly in the recent past). Once I get past this, then I can look at making sure PPP works (which I anticipate to be a relatively minor ordeal, since I have a pretty good idea what to do), and then firewall stuff. While I think of it, would anyone know of any distributions with more-recent SPARC support? I'd like to see 2.4.x kernels with iptable support, as well as more up-to-date tools, but seeing as this beastie is on the "slow" side, recompiling everything myself would be tantamount to torture.... 8( Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Non Linux mozilla issue

Here at MW we are blessed with Solaris workstations in addition to Linux. On Solaris 8 we have been unable to get the binary version from mozilla.org to run. It dies silently trying to load gtk. I compiled and installed gtk from gtk.org to no avail. Anyone run into this? Have any hints? Palm desktop should be no problem with Mandrake. I was running a Palm on Suse no problem last year. If you're using a recent Linux distribution I'm sure the programs have been upgraded now with newer features. I'm using a Zaurus PDA now so I'm not that up to date on Palm. Eudora, someone in this thread mentioned a program on converting mail files give it a try. Hiya Geoff! Are you looking to actually run those programs, or just for equivelant solutions for those uses? If it's the later, I'd strongly suggest checking out Evolution for Email & PIM (palm) functions. http://www.ximian.com/products/evolution/ And you could convert your old Eurdora email file to evolution format with http://freshmeat.net/projects/ceiconvert/?topic_id=28%2C87 A native app will usually be a lot nicer to use, than emulating a windows app. If you absolutely need THOSE apps, you can try wine, which works with some apps, mileage may vary. Or you can use VMWare which will actually emulate an entire computer and let you install windows on that emulated computer. (VMWare is commercial software). There's other options, but those are the 2 that stick out in my mind. Now ... I know nothing about HAM radio, so I'll just say that if you really need to run those specific windows apps, you might have a hard time since (I'm assuming) they somehow talk to the funky hardware. Meeting over the Access Grid?

As a few of you may already know, WPI has just recently installed an Access Grid Node. For those of you who have never heard of the Access Grid project, it's a completely immersive video conferencing system - like traditional videoconferencing, but arranged such that the technology portion becomes invisible, and you can converse with others as if they were in the same room. More details at http://www.accessgrid.org/ My idea was that if we could find a couple of remote sites with people who might be interested in joining us, we could have a meeting over the Access Grid. A list of other Access Grid sites is up at http://www-fp.mcs.anl.gov/fl/accessgrid/nodes.htm and includes BU at least. Educational Linux ... WAS: REMINDER: Upcoming LAN Party !!

Speaking about linux in education ... I work for Tom Snyder Productions (a Scholastic company) (www.tomsnyder.com) we make Educational software for schools. Recently we started using a toolkit for windows/mac portability that also happens to have every kind of unix support you could want. (you can probably guess what toolkit it is). So us geeky engineers have been pushing for a linux port, even if it's an unsupported port. So we went to customer service to see how many linux requests there were ... 0, zero, nadda, zilch. And we have a very in-depth customer relations database, every call gets logged. We asked around a bit, and found that it probably wouldn't work. It seems schools using linux are usually doing it because they are trying to save every penny. Kind of hard to sell software to schools like that. But at least we found out there's a lot of linux fileservers out there, so we're QA'ing serving our network products from them. (you'd be surprised at the wide varriances in file-locking between servers & protocols!) So I guess the moral of the story, call you congressmen ... Err... Um...call your software vendors, you never know when they might be listening. Next meeting ...

So LAN party next meeting ... I'd love to get into the security stuff & some of the gaming .. But for the gaming ... what are people planning on bringing or planning on playing? I'd suspect that because the thing came with windows drivers that it looks close enough to an MSDOS filesystem that windows won't scream so much, but when it comes to actually interacting with the filesystem/toc on the device it's nothing like that at all... Can you fdisk the device and format it? I think this is related to the FlashPath - the SmartMedia floppy adapter (same idea - slightly different media). I vaguely recall trying to get the binary-only smartdisk module to work - and having some success. According to the press release (http://linuxpr.com/releases/1968.html) - LinuxCare developed the driver - which may also work with the memory stick version. Can't seem to find anyplace to actually download it from though.
