They release a whole slew of different binary ones for different releases of different distros, plus a src rpm that will build to your particular kernel. As long as you have the kernel-source rpm installed that matches the kernel you're running, it works great. http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_ia32_1.0-4191 -- Frank Sweetser fs at wpi.edu WPI Network Engineer

rpm's for kernel modules?

by Bill Mills-Curran

I've dabbled in making rpm's from tar distributions a bit -- just enough to get a flavor of rpm building. One of the more challenging (frustrating?) rpm tasks is building an rpm for a kernel module. (Or maybe the tar/make package I'm starting from is just not well-designed.) Since the build can be kernel-specific, it's not even clear if building binary rpm's is worth it. Maybe a better idea is to concentrate on making the source rpm easily buildable so that the end user can generate an installation-specific binary rpm and get the benefit of rpm's over tar/make installations. Or, maybe it's not worth rpm's at all for kernel modules. Anyone have opinions on this? TIA, Bill

Upcoming meeting activities - ideas needed

by Andy Stewart

Hi everybody, I'm starting to plan for the next two or three WLUG meetings. I wanted to have them planned in advance, as I did with the first few meetings of the year 2003. Here's a summary of what we did (or tried to do): Jan 03 - Handhelds and Linux with Wes Allen's IPAQ (good meeting!) Feb 03 - LAN Party (not well attended, unfortunately) Mar 03 - maddog speaks to WLUG Can somebody tell me why the LAN party was not well attended? I'd like to plan meetings that you folks *want* to attend. :-) I hope to schedule activities for the April, May, and June meetings. Here are some ideas which I've culled from past e-mails on this subject: o security / ip tables meeting / firewalls (should we ask Bob Ziegler to return?) o printer drivers, namely gimp-print or foomatic If you have other ideas, or if you would like to volunteer to give a talk, please let me (or the list) know. Andy, This program makes some pretty neat graphics, but it's very limited. I can choose the number of cells in x and y axes, and it makes spots or stripes. I have a qualitative understanding of it, but I don't know the math. A friend of mine said she'd look around for a book that explains it. Got it! I have to run two x servers at the same time (didn't know I could do that), the first one in TrueColor and the second in PseudoColor by starting the second one with startx -- :1 -bpp 8 and the program runs ok. This is cool. Now all I need to do is figure out what reaction-diffusion means. I saw the math for it, and um, it looks like Greek to me. Anybody know anything about patterns of animal coat spots/stripes? Can anyone here figure out the mathematics of acupuncture point locations? (I know, I'm in way over my head here.) Ping pong is very important in the workplace. Nothing short of a high end time scheduling software package should do. However, given the budget requirements for the former, I would recommend and have been using Webcalendar on my site and like it so far: http://webcalendar.sourceforge.net/ There is a live demo there as well, but sometimes the language is not english. In that case, find the link for the login, demo/demo is usr/pw, and then find the link for prefs where you can change it to english. BR

Re: [Wlug] reaction-diffusion program

by Gregory Avedissian

I'm running in TrueColor, and I'm already in fvwm2. Same thing in twm. I don't know anything about vnc, and I can't find anything about it on my computer (help, man or apropos). Can't find anything about PseudoColor, either. How do I switch it? Thanks. RE: [Wlug] reaction-diffusion program

by Steve Freitag

Here are a couple of things to check: - XAllocColorCells works with a PseudoColor visual. You may be running in TrueColor. Use xdpyinfo to find out. (grep for Color) - If you are in PseudoColor mode, you might not have enough free colors left. You might want to start a plain X session (no netscape etc) with a window manager like fvwm or twm. If you are familiar with vnc, you can start a vncserver in PseudoColor mode using the -cc 3 option. You may also want to modify xstartup (in your .vnc directory) to invoke a simpler xinitrc which starts fvwm or twm. -----Original Message----- From: wlug-admin(a)mail.wlug.org [mailto:wlug-admin@mail.wlug.org] On Behalf Of Gregory Avedissian Sent: Tuesday, March 04, 2003 11:43 AM To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org Subject: [Wlug] reaction-diffusion program I'm trying to run a reaction-diffusion modeling program. Below is the link to the tarball. I was able to install it after editing the makefile (added -LX11R6 to the LIBS section, per generic instructions I found on a google search for the error message I got when make failed.) Here's the current problem: When I try to run the program with the sample parameters given in the readme.txt, I get the error message, "bad status from XAllocColorCells Segmentation fault" Note: I get occasional segmentation faults, possibly due to a flaky power supply. Those seem to be less frequent since I vacuumed the dust and cat hair out of the box. Here's a link to the tarball, in case anyone has the time or inclination to mess with it and/or offer advice. I think that's a limitation of my vid card if I remember correctly. Anyway, there was no difference. I get a quick flash like a window is opening, then it disappears and I get the error message. I would advise trying them all (8, 16, 32) and see if the result is the same in each case. Later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

Re: [Wlug] Samba shares

by Michael Long

It turned out that there was a file that was a soft link to another in that directory. I guess that that confused windows. I would have expected windows to copy all but that linked file, but nooooo!!! it had to fail with a very nondescript error that was useless. <sarcasm>I just love windows</sarcasm> Mike > on the linux system checkt he permissions of the sub directories.. > Have read and execute permmmisions? > > On Tue, 4 Mar 2003, Michael Long wrote: > > > > > I have a directory which has been shared out using samba.
