Re: [Wlug] Redhat GUI performance

by Karl Hiramoto

I've notice that when going from redhat 7.x to 8 or 9 you need a minimum of 256M RAM. with 128M and running gnome there is way too much swap space in use. Gnome and KDE are very bulky GUI's.. twm or blackbox are the slimest and fastest. A friend of mine runs gentoo linux and it seems very fast compared to redhat on the same box. type the "free" command at the prompt and see your memory usage also "ps aumx" to see process memory usage. I would reccomend spending the roughly $40 to get a 256M upgrade for your box. More RAM almost always helps. The os can keep more things in memory and give you a faster response. I use 512M myself. hope this helps On Fri, 9 May 2003, Hemstreet, Jeffrey L (Jeffrey) wrote: > I have a general question about Linux performance... > > I am running Redhat 8.0 on a Dell 400MHz, 128MB system (OptiPlex) with an > 8MB ATI Rage Pro Video card. Redhat GUI performance

by Hemstreet, Jeffrey L (Jeffrey)

I have a general question about Linux performance... I am running Redhat 8.0 on a Dell 400MHz, 128MB system (OptiPlex) with an 8MB ATI Rage Pro Video card. I have a fairly basic workstation installation, with SSHd, ftpd, telnetd, apached, and a couple other services running. Gnome seems to take forever to open windows/applications. It can be on the order of 10 seconds to a minute for some applications to come up. (Mozilla is one of the worst, even to just bring up a local file as the home page for the browser) Is Gnome just a very slow GUI, or is there something that I can do to speed up my system?? I know of several (5-6) people who have installed RedHat 7.2...8.0 on Dell and Sony systems (all CPU are 866MHz+) with Gnome or KDE and the performance has been very slow in the GUI. Even with a higher end 1.5GHz CPU/512MB RAM system. Is there a Linux distribution that has a standard GUI that is very responsive? Is Redhat just too bulky to run quickly, or do I need to download a better GUI for Redhat? With Windows2000, this system was very responsive, and the other people I know about are running XP, which is so much faster that they run XP most of the time now. Thanks, jeff

http load generators

by twg3＠attbi.com

Does anyone have any recommendations of open source tools for generating very high volume http traffic simulating large numbers of clients form multiple IP addresses? I did a search on sourceforge and most of the projects have not released any new code in 18 months or more - so not sure of status on most of them. I need to test an application that uses HTTP as its transport layer (but not HTML) so open source tools would allow the customizations I need, with out haveing to write everything from scratch.

RE: [Wlug] /tmp

by twg3＠attbi.com

Good advice. The X window system amd font server create its unix domain sockets as files under /tmp along with other programs, which will not show up doing "fuser -u /tmp/*". Also do a "netstat -pA" to get a list of all the unix domain sockets and look for files in /tmp. The -p will let you know which program you will break if you delete the socket, but just leave those files alone as they are not taking up any space on the file system, just an inode. > Gregory, > > You'll want to do a "fuser -u /tmp/*" and see what files are currently in > use. Andy, Thanks for the tips. I've tried everything you suggested, and still no joy. However, I think that a newer version of sane is in order. I'm still using the version from RH 8.0: > rpm -qa|fgrep sane sane-backends-1.0.8-5 sane-frontends-1.0.8-4 xsane-0.84-8 I have the Red Hat 9 CD's, and I'll upgrade as soon as possible to see what happens. I'm running sane-backends-1.0.9 and sane-frontends-1.0.9 which I built from source in /usr/local. I'm running xsane 0.90. There are more recent versions available. You might try something like this "find / -name "*sane*" | less". Also, try this: rm -rf ~/.sane/xsane If all else fails, try running strace on xsane. It might shed some clues. scanner help

by Bill Mills-Curran

I have a new Epson 1660 scanner, and I'm having difficulty getting it working with the sane drivers. Here's what I have thus far... 1. lsusb worked immediately. Here's some of the output: Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Virtual Hub Device Descriptor: <snip> Bus 001 Device 002: ID 04b8:011e Seiko Epson Corp. Device Descriptor: <snip> Bus 001 Device 003: ID 03f0:0317 Hewlett-Packard Device Descriptor: <snip> (I recently unloaded & loaded the USB & printer modules, and the device numbers for the printer (HP) and scanner (Epson) changed.) 2. sane-find-scanner: found USB scanner (vendor = 0x04b8, product = 0x011e) at device /dev/usb/scanner0 This did not work until I added this to the /etc/modules.conf file and modprobe'd "scanner": options scanner vendor=0x04b8 product=0x011e 3. My /etc/sane.d/epson.conf file has: usb /dev/usb/scanner0 (Is that right? I did try some other devices) I also tried usb 0x04b8 0x011e No luck 4. I chmod'd (666) /dev/usb/scanner*. 5. xsane always fails. Here are some of the messages. > xsane no devices available > xsane epson:/dev/usb/scanner0 Failed to open device 'epson:/dev/usb/scanner0': Operation not supported. Any suggestions? TIA, Bill P.S. I'm running stock Red Hat 8.0. (I have installed the ALSA sound modules.)

There is some weirdness with GPL'ness of the project.. Lawmeme got dinged by phpnuke a while back... unfortunatly I can't seem to connect to them right now. here's an article that references it ... http://news.postnuke.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=… Basically phpnuke has a copyright notice it outputs to every single request. The phpNuke author says you MUST keep this in. The GPL has a provision that hints at this, but doesn't really seem to fit to me. It's all a bit whacky, and doesn't seem to me to be what the GPL is all about. -Marc On Thu, 1 May 2003, Stephen C. Daukas wrote: > > 3. The last issue is a bit fuzzy. Basically, it looks as though none of the "free" CMS software applications are actually turn-key out-of-the-box. Some offer a better base to work from than others, but everyhting I have seen in the last week or so has convinced me that you have to get under the hood in some way for some reason. Not that I'm done digging, but it looks like no matter which way you choose to go, you will have to do two things: 1. Write some of your own code, and 2: Gain some pretty intimate understanding of how the chosen system actually works so you can accomplish #1. If my guess is correct, I'll end up using Perl, PhP, mySQL, and probably WML on running on Linux/Apache. ;-) I am hoping to start with a project already out there and go from there... But I'll be digging around for a little while longer... Steve Brett Russ wrote: > Stephen C. Daukas wrote: > >> By way of FYI... If you are looking for a basic CMS you can check out Plone. It is a product that is installed in Zope and offers some very rich functionality "out of the box" There is also a large community that has written products for various speciallized needs. You will find bloggers, bugtrackers, polling products and many utilities that are available for implementation into your site. For more info go to www.zope.org www.plone.org I'll get off my soapbox now :)) --mike On Thu, 2003-05-01 at 11:14, Brett Russ wrote: > Stephen C. Daukas wrote: > > By way of FYI... Re: [Wlug] A bit off topic - phpnuke et al.

by Stephen C. Daukas

By way of FYI... In all of my digging, I have found a fair bit of information regarding phpnuke, most of it bad. Forgetting about robustness of code and security issues, it would seem that many of the folks involved with phpnuke left in protest to form postnuke. The few email conversations I have had indicate three issues with phpnuke: 1. The person responsible began representing the contributing developers code as his own. This caused susch a stir that the contributing developers went to the mandrake CEO to force the issue of giving credit to the developers. (Apparently mandrake has a hand in this in some way that isn't clear to me.) As a result, the word on the street is that development on phpnuke has dwindled... 2. Really bad security holes. Examples include chmod everything to 777 in the n-1 version, to security scripts being easily hacked (and owned by user nobody), to certain pages being endowed with super-user priveledges - all you had to do was enter the URL and you were in. Some claim phpnuke is fixed, others claim there are still major problems... My recent experiences with phpnuke where I work suggest the criticism is valid. 3. The last issue is a bit fuzzy. There are those who were reportedly involved with the development of phpnuke who claim that the "author" has "interesting ideas" about GPL and, according to them, believe that phpnuke in the future may no loger remain GPL. So, looks like postnuke has picked up where phpnuke left off? The dig continues... ;-) Steve

Cool little set of scripts. They even come with that funky Desktop icon. What a luxury! Working through the scripts though it seems that the USB system does not see the USB device properly. Looking through some posts it looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel. Kernel 2.4.21 will have the updated usbnet patch that will allow communication with the 5600. I expect I'll be able to make some minor mods to the zaurus_check script and it should work like a charm. Thanks! It also suggests a two-step approach for nuke: 1. use the default settings to get up and going fairly quickly, and then 2. spend some time looking under the hood and making the changes that both time and desire allow...
