Andy, I've been getting these emails, as well as anything sent to my @alum.wpi.edu forwarding address multiple times. Looking at and comparing the message headers, it would appear that mcafee.wpi.edu might be the culprit as it's the point in the chain of mail relays where timestamps start changing. Maybe it's in a forwarding loop or it's mail queue is hosed somehow so that it thinks messages haven't been delivered yet, so it retries. *shrug* Glad to know that I'm not the only one seeing this problem, it's been happening since Friday and is driving me batty. Anyone else at WPI have an idea what might be going on or is experiencing this issue? Xfer mail from Outlook to...

Anyone out there know how to get email out of Outlook/Exchange and into something else? I use outlook at work, and also at home when doing stuff for work, but want to get all that stuff into a flat file similar to what UNIX uses (used?), which is also similar to what Eudora uses. In other words, I want to get away from Outlook/exchange all together and get into a format that is easily manipulated by scripts or easily imported into other email applications. I have not actually downloaded your code and am just gathering info right now, but I do have a couple of quick questions in the event your project code base is a fit for what I need to do: 1. what language - your web site indicates c++, scheme/guile for the scripts but sourceforge indicates delphi/kylix???? 2. how complete/incomplete http handling compete, scripting engine, gui (do not really care too much about), etc. ?? 3. GPL? We would need to modify since the client side of the application is not a browser/html based. It just uses http and servlets as the tier between the client and backend business logic and database - so we sould need to modify the scripting logic anyway to handle serailized java objects and dynamically create the next appropriate request (eg fixing the previous failed request or going on to the next step in the business process). 4. Would you prefer to give CVS committ access or to get new code/patches sent through you???? Or would you prefer I created a fork giving you credit for initial code base? Ultimately, the load generator is for internal use at the company I work for and all the changes from us would be funnelled through one person designated as the maintainer of the code internally. Clarification: location of next meeting

Computer 4 sale

Dual PIII 1ghz Case + power 512mb ram 2 Hard Drives - 16gig + 8gig (or about that size) Sony IDE CDRW (fast, I think 48x,24x,16x) Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI Ethernet card $400 There will be 2 big gaping holes in the front if I can't find the 5 1/4 drive bay covers. No video card. Also, nVidia geForce 3 and above cards don't work with this motherboard. nVidia blames it on Tyan, and Tyan blames it on nVidia. My Radeon 7550 works just fine (but you don't get that). If you want, I have an old voodoo3 card which was in this at one point, it worked then, you can have it for free with the computer. Under Windows, I was never able to get USB working well (keyboard was fine, camera + mouse weren't). Under linux, usb worked 100%, so I'm assuming it's just my luck with windows and not the hardware. I will be wiping the drives clean before selling it, so you're on your own for an OS. I think one of the drives may be mounted "creatively" so be forewarned. If anyone wants it, hopefully we can arrange a drop-off & pickup, perhaps at a wlug meeting to avoid any shipping. Please send replies to me, and not the list. -Marc

At this meeting, our guest speaker will be Vince McHugh. Vince will talk to WLUG about the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS). The second part of Vince's talk will be about imaging and scanning. In this context, Vince will talk about how his company, NECS, is making Canon scanning products work in the Linux environment. Vince is a member of GNHLUG and is also a Systems Support Manager for NECS/Canon (the largest independent Canon dealer in New England). Vince has been involved with Linux for the last 4-5 years, and also possesses a Novell CNE and a Windows MCP. Light refreshments will be served at the meeting. Yes, I've heard people claim that using the preemptive scheduler patch on 2.4 it "feels" faster. but results seem anecdotal. Anyone here try that patch? My guess would be that total CPU throughput decreases, but interactive feeling increases, just what you want on workstation, but not on most servers. I've notice that when going from redhat 7.x to 8 or 9 you need a minimum of 256M RAM. with 128M and running gnome there is way too much swap space in use. Gnome and KDE are very bulky GUI's.. twm or blackbox are the slimest and fastest. A friend of mine runs gentoo linux and it seems very fast compared to redhat on the same box. type the "free" command at the prompt and see your memory usage also "ps aumx" to see process memory usage. I would reccomend spending the roughly $40 to get a 256M upgrade for your box. More RAM almost always helps. The os can keep more things in memory and give you a faster response. Redhat GUI performance

I have a general question about Linux performance... I am running Redhat 8.0 on a Dell 400MHz, 128MB system (OptiPlex) with an 8MB ATI Rage Pro Video card. I have a fairly basic workstation installation, with SSHd, ftpd, telnetd, apached, and a couple other services running. Gnome seems to take forever to open windows/applications. It can be on the order of 10 seconds to a minute for some applications to come up. (Mozilla is one of the worst, even to just bring up a local file as the home page for the browser) Is Gnome just a very slow GUI, or is there something that I can do to speed up my system?? I know of several (5-6) people who have installed RedHat 7.2...8.0 on Dell and Sony systems (all CPU are 866MHz+) with Gnome or KDE and the performance has been very slow in the GUI. Good advice. The X window system amd font server create its unix domain sockets as files under /tmp along with other programs, which will not show up doing "fuser -u /tmp/*". Also do a "netstat -pA" to get a list of all the unix domain sockets and look for files in /tmp. Andy, Thanks for the tips. I've tried everything you suggested, and still no joy. However, I think that a newer version of sane is in order. I'm still using the version from RH 8.0: > rpm -qa|fgrep sane sane-backends-1.0.8-5 sane-frontends-1.0.8-4 xsane-0.84-8 I have the Red Hat 9 CD's, and I'll upgrade as soon as possible to see what happens. I'm running sane-backends-1.0.9 and sane-frontends-1.0.9 which I built from source in /usr/local. I'm running xsane 0.90. There are more recent versions available. I'm using a 2.4.20 kernel, but it worked on my 2.4.19 and I think also on 2.4.18. You didn't mention your kernel rev, but I assume 2.4.x since Redhat 8.0 is a relatively recent vintage. > > 5. xsane always fails. You might try something like this "find / -name "*sane*" | less". Also, try this: rm -rf ~/.sane/xsane If all else fails, try running strace on xsane. It might shed some clues. scanner help

I have a new Epson 1660 scanner, and I'm having difficulty getting it working with the sane drivers. Here's what I have thus far... 1. lsusb worked immediately. There is some weirdness with GPL'ness of the project.. Lawmeme got dinged by phpnuke a while back... unfortunatly I can't seem to connect to them right now. here's an article that references it ... http://news.postnuke.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=… Basically phpnuke has a copyright notice it outputs to every single request. The phpNuke author says you MUST keep this in. The GPL has a provision that hints at this, but doesn't really seem to fit to me. Basically, it looks as though none of the "free" CMS software applications are actually turn-key out-of-the-box. Some offer a better base to work from than others, but everyhting I have seen in the last week or so has convinced me that you have to get under the hood in some way for some reason. Not that I'm done digging, but it looks like no matter which way you choose to go, you will have to do two things: 1. Write some of your own code, and 2: Gain some pretty intimate understanding of how the chosen system actually works so you can accomplish #1. If my guess is correct, I'll end up using Perl, PhP, mySQL, and probably WML on running on Linux/Apache. ;-) I am hoping to start with a project already out there and go from there...
