rpm problems

when i do rpm --rebuilddb it hangs. I have to do a kill -9 to fix it. I can't install any rpm's If i reboot my box I can use RPM again. however only to install one rpm. After that, i must reboot again to use another rpm. 2 admin questions.

OS: Red Hat 9 Q1: sendmail... I have my sendmail configured to masquerade my outgoing email with my cable ISP's domain (charter.net) However, I have not found out how to convert my local username to the username I have at my ISP. Any ideas? BTW, I've configured Pine just fine for this. I'd just like take the extra step and have sendmail take care of all mailer utilities. Q2: CUPS... What's the best/right way to upgrade from LPRng to CUPS? I understand that HP printers work better under CUPS. True or False? TIA, Bill

My experience doing drive swaps between machines has been very good. It almost always works, a possible pitfall is if you have a custome kernel with hardware spefic stuff compiled in. I would reccomend runing badblocks check on the drive to make sure there are no bad sectors. Old drive - new machine?

I have a RedHat 7.3 server that is sick. It would appear that there are all kinds of hard disk errors but I don't think its the hard drive because its done it with two new hard drives. I'm guessing its the on-motherboard disk controller. It will boot up okay, but after a (steadily decreasing) amount of time the errors begin again and the hard drive light stays on. The question is: the motherboard is an old Socket-7 AT Epox which I can't replace exactly -- what are the issues involved with swapping the drive (which I believe is okay) into a new machine with a different motherboard, without reloading RH 7.3 or my data?

NEW Pioneer DVD-RW A05 for sale

Folks, Ever made a mistake? I did. I purchased a new DVD-RW drive to replace the unit I thought was defective. After the unit arrived (Thursday) I subsequently trace the problem to an intermittent IDE cable. I'd like to sell the new one if anyone's in the market. I have heard similar RedHat upgrade stories from others. However, I've yet to see a completely successful upgrade from any distribution. Perhaps I'm just hearing the vocal folks. The version of xsane in the upgrade did the trick. BTW, I did have one glitch in the upgrade -- it did a poor job of modifying modules.conf, so a bunch of stuff (printers, network, etc.) stopped working until I fixed it. Bill

cd-writer problem

Hi I have a problem with my cd-writer. On windows, I have no problem (dommage). But with my redhat 8.0 kernel 2.4.18-24.8.0.
