They have both a 50 pin and a 68 pin internal connector, and a 68 pin external. You can hook everything up to the 68 pin connector, but you need 68 to 50 pin dongles, or you can hook some to each as long as the IDs are unique. --Skip

Flaky disks or controller?

by Andy Stewart

HI Everybody, Having recently rebuilt my "good" computer, I'm now seeing a bunch of disk I/O errors in my system log. I have 3 SCSI disks connected to a Symbios controller using the sym53c8xx module and a 2.4.20 kernel. At first, I suspected an individual drive, as it is nearly 4 years old, and all of the errors were there. I have since physically removed that drive, and now the other drives are logging errors rather sporatically. Typically, I see an error message from reiserfs about how it couldn't write to the drive, and a disk I/O error in the log. The system is then wedged and requires a reboot. With the problem showing up on all 3 SCSI drives, I'm now suspicious of the (used) controller which I received as a "present" from a guy at work. If it should be the controller, do you folks have recommendations about reasonably priced SCSI controllers? I have 6 SCSI devices in my system and I need 68-pin as well as 50-pin capabilities. One of my disks is U160, and I think the others are slower, but with disks always getting faster, I'd probably want a U160 controller. I don't think I want to pay the premium for a U320 controller. Upcoming WLUG meeting - topics?

by Andy Stewart

Hi Everybody, We have a WLUG meeting coming up on Wednesday, June 18th, and I have neither a topic nor a speaker lined up for this meeting. While I'm at it, we should probably plan for the July and August meetings as well. The July meeting will be the 6th(!) anniversary of the formation of WLUG, and we should probably celebrate in some way. I'm looking for volunteer speakers for the next few meetings. Please let me know if you would be interested in this opportunity. (That's the cue for everyone to raise their hands!). Re: [Wlug] Linux and wireless 802.11b

Actually I did get it working. The problem was I had some undefined symbols after I built the kernel. The symbols appeared to be related to SMP. So I compiled SMP support into the kernel (strange since this is a laptop...). The undefined symbols went away and the pcmcia card started to work. -Chuck On Sat, 01 Jan 2000 04:14:55 -0500, donald vitkus <devitk(a)comcast.net> wrote: > Chuck Noyes wrote: > >> >> I haven't had any luck getting a Netgear MA401 802.11b PCMCIA card >> working. IP Chains on RH. 7.3 to disable YM, ICQ, and MSN Messanger.

by aramico＠duahati.com

Hi all, I'm using masqueride for my client's internet connection. Here I defined only on port 21, 22, 80, 53, 25, 110, and 443. By this chains rule, all my client can get the access of the internet for ftp, ssh, Web handling, mail (pop3 and smtp) and https. That something I hate, I could not disable the access for Yahoo Messanger : (. YM has its personal proxy managing that can use defined common port as 80 (http port). How can I disable the connection for Yahoo Messanger using IPchains ? It's a good thing too if I can do the same thing for MSN Messanger, and ICQ. Note : - ICQ and MSN could use defined port opened. - This is my simple Chains. ipchains -F ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 80 -j MASQ -p tcp ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 80 -j MASQ -p udp ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 53 -j MASQ -p tcp ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 53 -j MASQ -p udp ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 25 -j MASQ -p tcp ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 25 -j MASQ -p udp ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 110 -j MASQ -p tcp ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 110 -j MASQ -p udp ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 443 -j MASQ -p tcp ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 443 -j MASQ -p udp ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 21 -j MASQ -p tcp ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 21 -j MASQ -p udp ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 22 -j MASQ -p tcp ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.21.0/24 -d 0/0 22 -j MASQ -p udp

CD/DVD-ROM question

by Gregory Avedissian

I just noticed that my boot message tells me that my CD-ROM and CDRW drives are also DVD-ROM. I wasn't aware that either of them had that capability when I bought them. All those spam messages about reading DVD from my CD-ROM went in the trash without being read, so now I'm wondering. Is it possible to read a DVD on a CD drive? If so, how? If not, why does the boot message say that? Thanks. Greg

Linux and wireless 802.11b

by Chuck Noyes

I haven't had any luck getting a Netgear MA401 802.11b PCMCIA card working. I'm using RH 7.3 (2.4.18 kernel). I rebuilt the kernel to turn on support for the card, but I can't get a connection to my access point (a Netgear WG602). The kernel boots and tries to start the eth0 interface, which doesn't exist, since there's no CAT5 cable pluggeg into the ethernet port. The output of ifconfig shows the only interface that's up is the loopback (lo) interface. I have an HP Pavilion zt1180 laptop. Is there anything else I need to do? My experience doing drive swaps between machines has been very good. It almost always works, a possible pitfall is if you have a custome kernel with hardware spefic stuff compiled in. I would reccomend runing badblocks check on the drive to make sure there are no bad sectors. Old drive - new machine?

by Richard Goodman

I have a RedHat 7.3 server that is sick. It would appear that there are all kinds of hard disk errors but I don't think its the hard drive because its done it with two new hard drives. I'm guessing its the on-motherboard disk controller. It will boot up okay, but after a (steadily decreasing) amount of time the errors begin again and the hard drive light stays on. The question is: the motherboard is an old Socket-7 AT Epox which I can't replace exactly -- what are the issues involved with swapping the drive (which I believe is okay) into a new machine with a different motherboard, without reloading RH 7.3 or my data?

NEW Pioneer DVD-RW A05 for sale

by Skip Gaede

Folks, Ever made a mistake? I did. I purchased a new DVD-RW drive to replace the unit I thought was defective. After the unit arrived (Thursday) I subsequently trace the problem to an intermittent IDE cable. I'd like to sell the new one if anyone's in the market. The A05 is a 4X drive, and I paid $225.00. for it. I'd be happy to sell it for a reduced price of $200.00 if anyone's interested. Thanks, Skip

Woops. Sorry, I didn't see this message before. First, let me admit that I don't understand most of what is here, but I'll try. It says that some drives don't like fixation in dummy mode, so have you tried burning for real without dummy mode? And why does it list the average write speed as 191.3x? I still don't see any attachments. I think you have to send it as inline text. Greg Stéphane Purnelle wrote: > Le sam 24/05/2003 à 06:46, Gregory Avedissian a écrit : > >>Where's your output file?
