CD/DVD-ROM question

I just noticed that my boot message tells me that my CD-ROM and CDRW drives are also DVD-ROM. I wasn't aware that either of them had that capability when I bought them. All those spam messages about reading DVD from my CD-ROM went in the trash without being read, so now I'm wondering. Is it possible to read a DVD on a CD drive? If so, how? If not, why does the boot message say that? Thanks. Greg

Linux and wireless 802.11b

I haven't had any luck getting a Netgear MA401 802.11b PCMCIA card working. I'm using RH 7.3 (2.4.18 kernel). I rebuilt the kernel to turn on support for the card, but I can't get a connection to my access point (a Netgear WG602). The kernel boots and tries to start the eth0 interface, which doesn't exist, since there's no CAT5 cable pluggeg into the ethernet port. The output of ifconfig shows the only interface that's up is the loopback (lo) interface. I have an HP Pavilion zt1180 laptop. Is there anything else I need to do? thanks removing the __db files seemd to do the trick but now i have rpm --rebuilddb error: db4 error(16) from dbenv->remove: Device or resource busy reading on google gave me: http://lists.freshrpms.net/pipermail/rpm-list/2003-April/003973.html so supposdly there is nothing to worry about. rpm problems

when i do rpm --rebuilddb it hangs. I have to do a kill -9 to fix it. I can't install any rpm's If i reboot my box I can use RPM again. however only to install one rpm. After that, i must reboot again to use another rpm. 2 admin questions.

OS: Red Hat 9 Q1: sendmail... I have my sendmail configured to masquerade my outgoing email with my cable ISP's domain (charter.net) However, I have not found out how to convert my local username to the username I have at my ISP. Any ideas? BTW, I've configured Pine just fine for this. I'd just like take the extra step and have sendmail take care of all mailer utilities. Q2: CUPS... What's the best/right way to upgrade from LPRng to CUPS? I understand that HP printers work better under CUPS. True or False? TIA, Bill

My experience doing drive swaps between machines has been very good. It almost always works, a possible pitfall is if you have a custome kernel with hardware spefic stuff compiled in. I would reccomend runing badblocks check on the drive to make sure there are no bad sectors. Old drive - new machine?

I have a RedHat 7.3 server that is sick. It would appear that there are all kinds of hard disk errors but I don't think its the hard drive because its done it with two new hard drives. I'm guessing its the on-motherboard disk controller. It will boot up okay, but after a (steadily decreasing) amount of time the errors begin again and the hard drive light stays on. The question is: the motherboard is an old Socket-7 AT Epox which I can't replace exactly -- what are the issues involved with swapping the drive (which I believe is okay) into a new machine with a different motherboard, without reloading RH 7.3 or my data?

NEW Pioneer DVD-RW A05 for sale

Folks, Ever made a mistake? I did. I purchased a new DVD-RW drive to replace the unit I thought was defective. After the unit arrived (Thursday) I subsequently trace the problem to an intermittent IDE cable. I'd like to sell the new one if anyone's in the market. The A05 is a 4X drive, and I paid $225.00. for it. I'd be happy to sell it for a reduced price of $200.00 if anyone's interested. Thanks, Skip

Where's your output file? Maybe attachments don't work on this list. Did you identify the drive as scsi at boot up and load module ide-scsi? What's the output of cdrecord -scanbus look like?
