When messing around with the filesystem allways a good idea to make backups, just incase. I would continue to expore the reiserfsck option. possibly one or more of the options: --rebuild-tree --rebuild-sb --fix-fixable What does reiserfsck --check do? have you run a badblocks check on the device? I have 2 disks in my system. Disk 1(hda) has windows and SuSE7.3 installed on it. Disk 2(hdb) has SuSE 8.0. When booting SuSE8.0 it mounts the partition hdb7 ("/") as readonly. This was not the case until the system was rebooted last week. Prior to the reboot I could read and write to the partition. I was out of town when I started having connectivity issues and had the wife reboot the machine. I had ownly been accessing the machine for email and file storage and don't know what has changed. When booting into SuSE 7.3 I can mount hdb7 as rw. I believe the problem has something to do with the boot process but am not sure. I have now been able to boot the system using another drive. The original boot drive (hda7) can be mounted successfully with the following fstab configuration: /dev/hda7 /data2 reiserfs noauto, user 0 0 When reiserfsck /data2 is run I get the following messages: reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 16 reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 2 reiserfs_open: neither new nor old reiserfs format found on /data2 reiserfsck: --rebuild-sb may restore reiserfs super block What are the ramifications of running this? Is this something that can cause the data on the disk to be lost? Thanks for any help, Mike

Help! System booting as readonly

by Michael Long

While away on business I lost the ability to ssh into my computer. I had my wife ping it from within the home network and she was unable to. After walking her through some ifconfig diagnostics (she is a technically challanged individual) I next had her reboot the box in the hope that it would "fix" the problem. It did not solve the problem. Now that I am home I see that it is mounting the drives as readonly. The following is a partial listing of the dmesg: kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno = 2 VFS: Mounted root (reiserfs filesystem) readonly Trying to move old root to /initrd ... failed Unmounting old root clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6005: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6005: writing inode 927 on readonly FS How do I go about diagnosing and fixing this problem? Assuming you're talking about the one based on the dxr3 chipset, then yes, it exists, but the last time I tried it - it wasn't entirely reliable - though it did work in most circumstances. REMINDER: Meeting on Wednesday, June 18th

by Andy Stewart

Hi everybody, The next WLUG meeting will be on Wednesday, June 18th in a different place. This time, we're in Olin Hall room 107 (the big lecture hall on the left on the first floor of Olin Hall). More detailed directions are available on the WLUG website. The meeting time is the usual 7:00 PM. A couple of people had mentioned an interest in addressing WLUG, but I currently don't have a definite commitment for a speaker for this meeting. I would therefore llke to use this as a planning meeting to decide what activities the group would like to pursue over the next few months. Perhaps these folks would like to make a commitment for a future WLUG meeting (if so, please contact me directly). I'll bring some light refreshments. If there are enough of us, we'll go to the Boynton Restaurant afterwards for pizza/beer. See ya later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

The Hollywood Plus has the same driver as the Creative Labs dxr3, there's a project page at http://dxr3.sourceforge.net/ I've tried the drivers on my dxr3, which worked OK, but I never got the VGA-overlay working properly.
