Re: [Wlug] More SCSI hard drive woes

by Gregory Avedissian

Andy, I'm pretty sure I don't know the answer to your question, but I want to say that in my limited experience, blaming the power supply is overrated. I got a new power supply to correct lockups and seg faults on the advice of my neighbor, and it didn't help at all. So I'm wondering if I bought a bad one. Are you getting the same errors with the new drive that you got with the old one? Now, my neighbor is suggesting that it's the power company, screwing around with the waveform, so that the meter doesn't show the power loss from everyone's a/c units running in this weather. Sounds reasonable to me, especially since I've had a few lockups when I was running windows, and it seems to be worse when the weather is hotter. More SCSI hard drive woes

by Andy Stewart

HI everybody, I recently sent a SCSI drive back to Hitachi for warranty replacement. In the interim, I purchased a Maxtor replacement drive. It has been working fine for about 2 weeks, and now this new drive is tossing read errors at me(!). Did I just get (un)lucky, or could something in my system be causing this? Some have suggested checking the power supply. I've run memtest and it passed for a 12 hour test. I've swapped ports on the 2-port SCSI card. I'm at a loss as to why this continues to occur. Any thoughts? Thanks, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

LTSP training video online

by Andy Stewart

HI everybody, This link might prove interesting for folks with very fast Internet connections: http://www.lpbn.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=50&mo… If that doesn't work, try this: http://www.lpbn.org Click "The Mandrake Hour" (left side) Click the second video "The Linux Terminal Server Installation" It works for me with the Linux verison of RealPlay. I remember a brain storming session many of us had in the WPI Library parking lot after a WLUG meeting where we thought about making Linux training videos. We'll, somebody is doing it! On the Linux Public Broadcasting Network, there are many other videos. RE: [Wlug] AMD systems

by Simoncini, Matthew

Mike, Just called 1-877-4-turing and they said there are no more "system 3.0" systems left and the "system 4.0" systems only come with 256MB RAM. The guy I spoke to wasn't willing to come down on the price at all, but agreed to give me the 512MB RAM for an additional $25. Just wanted to let everyone know what they were willing to offer me. Ugh, a quick apology to anyone who tried to respond to this e-mail. I recently setup a new server at my house and this was the first time I actually sent e-mail on it using pine instead of from evolution. The sending domain in pine is fixed now, and my server should accept e-mail address to that domain just in case. If the load won't kill the machine, an easy way to do this is by setting up a transparent squid proxy. http://www.squid-cache.org/ Then the squid logs will tell you who accessed what fairly easily. Also ... you'll easilly be able to get the full URL's and get an added bonus of some local caching. -Marc On Wed, 20 Aug 2003, Malcolm H. I have a few machines connected to the internet via a linux box that runs NAT. I need to know which websites are being accessed by the internal machines. IPTraf is installed, so I have the information, my question is if there is a utility already out there to format it into something more easily readable? I want to be able to see that machine A accessed site XYZ.com and how often they did so. I know that ipchains will print out the current masq'd connections, but has anybody played with the logging feature? Unfortunately, this machine is highly used, and I can not just start randomly modifying the ruleset. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanx! -Malcolm

Speaking of VPNs... I just noticed that the September 2003 issue of SysAdmin Magazine, which just showed up in my mail box, has and article titled "Build IPSec VPNs Using the Linux Kernel 2.6". The author talks about a native IPsec Stack being part of the new 2.6 kernel. The article is not online as far as I know, but here is a link to a web page describing the issue. http://www.samag.com/articles/2003/0309/ And for those wondering what other goodies might be in the 2.6 Kernel: http://www.kniggit.net/wwol26.html > -----Original Message----- > From: wlug-admin(a)mail.wlug.org [mailto:wlug-admin@mail.wlug.org] On Behalf > Of Andy Stewart > Sent: Monday, August 18, 2003 7:27 PM > To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org > Subject: Re: [Wlug] LTSP meeting slides > > On Sunday 17 August 2003 11:51 pm, Michael Long wrote: > > Andy, thank you for the excellent talk and demo. Re: [Wlug] LTSP meeting slides

Andy, thank you for the excellent talk and demo. The tools available to the linux community are top notch. The LTSP project is a prime example of that fact. I would like to suggest a talk on the OpenVPN project for the next meeting. I think it would be really cool if WLUG could sponser a project this winter that involved setting up a network w/ VPN, securing it and then attempting to hack it to find its vulnerabilities. This is probably a naive idea for many reasons...but I think many of us would be interested in learning the proper way of installing, securing, and maintaining our networks. Cheers, Mike > > Hi Everybody, > > I've just posted the slides from the previous WLUG meeting on the website. > There are in StarOffice format as well as HTML. LTSP meeting slides

by Andy Stewart

Hi Everybody, I've just posted the slides from the previous WLUG meeting on the website. There are in StarOffice format as well as HTML. From the WLUG home page, scroll down and click the link for "Past Meeting Information". For those of you who were unable to attend, I dare say you missed a good meeting. There were alot of questions and people really seemed interested in the topic. Fortunately, my client computer booted off of my laptop server just like it did when I left home. I even went out on a limb and attempted to get Doug Waud's computer working as a client, since the "live demo" concept seems to be a popular feature of WLUG meetings. I hadn't seen Doug's computer previously, but he did bring the proper network boot floppy. I "got Doug-ed" the first time (you've got to watch your cables and power cords around Doug) by a network cable that wasn't entirely plugged in. By the third attempt, his client booted with minor video artifacts, probably due to not using the correct XFree86 software. I'm soliciting ideas for the next meeting, which will be the first meeting of the year with the new crop of WPI students. I hope to have a great meeting planned so that the WPI students will continue to attend, as they constitute a sizeable percentage of the WLUG membership. Reminder: WLUG Meeting, Thurs Aug 14 - 7:00 PM

by Andy Stewart

Hi Everybody, This is a friendly reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting on Thursday, August 14, 2003, at 7:00 PM in Olin Hall on the WPI campus. Go into Olin Hall's front door, to the top of the stairs, and we'll be in the big lecture hall on the left. I'll be addressing the group at this meeting, and the topic will be the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP). Come and learn how to use your old, potentially obsolete hardware as a graphics terminal connected to a more powerful server. I'll demonstrate (live!) how a Pentium 90 with 48 MB of memory and a 10 Mbps ethernet connection could be used effectively as an LTSP client, running any Linux program that is installed on the server. I've also got a couple of those Linux Format magazines for raffle (one with a CD, the other with a DVD). I'll have sodas and cookies also for refreshments. After the meeting, we'll make our monthly pilgrimage to the Boynton Restaurant for pizza and beers. All are welcome to attend. There is no admission fee for admittance to a WLUG meeting. Donations are always welcome but not required. See ya later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

Reply-To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org HI everybody, I've been out of touch all week due to a catastrophic hard drive failure. My hard drive is only 1.5 years old and its an IBM Ultrastar 18 GB SCSI drive with a 5 year warranty. IBM/Hitachi will be getting it back assuming it fails their diags, which I have to run as a prerequisite to getting an RMA. Naturally, they are DOS based diags. They have incredibly fussy rules about packing the drive for shipment, lest one voids one's warranty (say that three times fast). Believe it or not, it died while I was doing the tape backup!! I lost about 1 weeks worth of Quicken transactions and the photos from my sister's wedding (which I can recover from CDs previously burned for other family members). I got lucky. The moral of the story is: Make sure you do your backups! This is the 2nd hard drive that I've lost in the last 12 months (the first one was over 5 years old).
