Hi all I was somewhat surprised not to see mention of this article on this list so I thought I'd pass it on. On Monday the T&G had an article "Tech Policy Changes --- Mass going open source". The gist was that Finance secretary, Erik Kriss instructed the state's chief technology officer to adopt a policy of "open standards, open source" for all future spending on information technology. Interesting. It will be interesting to see what comes of this. doug

Hi! Since my job is in the TV field, I have been watching this thread. Before you can even look at a studio, there are several things that need to be acomplished. The Producer (someone has to take the reins and make decisions, studio reservations, find crew, etc.) needs to set up some production meetings and decide how the show will be formatted (is it a series of shows, is it a one time show, talking heads show, magazine type, etc.). Then, a script has to be written. What will happen when, what needs to be edited, how long the final production will be, etc. Then a crew has to be chosen: director, camera operators, editors, etc. Then studio time, if needed, could be reserved. If someone has a digital video camera, I believe there is some editing software out there that runs on Linux. Doug, you are right, but your numbers are off a tad; for every second of finished video, approx. 1 minute of post production are required. Pre-production time is even more than that, sometimes. Don't let the numbers scare you...it's still quite do-able, just remember, a good product takes some time and work. Again, more investigation and I found the problem. Need to set the root: alias to a non-root user in the aliases file. Postfix won't deliver mail to the root account. Also, I set the domain info to bellatlantic.net. Seems to do the right things so far. ( I figure if I post what I've found, it may help someone else, right?) I think this sounds like it's turning into an interesting idea. I would be willing to help out as a cameraman or something behind the scenes, and I do have a laptop with video out, but I would need a ride from campus to the studio. In my eyes, a well configured box is one where every daemon that doesn't need to be run, is turned off. Sane firewalling rules are in place for the services that do need to be run. Something like redhat network is configured in cron to run once a day and pull updated patches and apply them automagically. You can't expect regular Joe User to become a sysadmin over night. domain settings on dsl with dynamic IP and NAT (and postfix issue)

One thing I've never been sure of is what to set the domain to on my Linux box. I'm on verizon dsl with a dynamic IP and PPPOE. I just got a dyndns.org domain with a different hostname than what I have for the machine. I set up the machine to run spamassassin (and to experiment). Machine name = grizzy Dyndns.org address = dibb.homelinux.net Email = jntdibb(a)bellatlantic.net What should I be using for the domain name? Specifically I'm having trouble with some part of postfix or spamc/d. I believe an hourly cron job is trying to send mail to 'root' which causes the following in maillog. I can send my postfix/main.cf file if anyone is interested. The error given here "Media region code is mismatched to logical unit" sounds like the drive believes that it's not allowed to read content of that type. Are you trying to view a non-US/Canada movie in the drive? problem hardware?

Hello all, Today I received my slot loading pioneer dvd rom drive from newegg.com. But linux tells me there are problems with it. The problem is my new hardware right? Or should I upgrade my kernel? Yury, You can count me in. I also know my way around a TV production studio. We had talked about doing an introduction to linux. As an aside to that I was thinking that possibly we could do a show on equivalent pieces of software on the linux side of things that could replace (perceived) missing functionality. This would include stuff like Evolution, Mozilla, GnuCash, OpenOffice, mplayer, xmms, etc. What do people think?
