Re: [Wlug] Repartitioning for Installfest

by Ryan Caron

Thanks for offering to loan your copy of PQMagic for the Installfest. I think we'll give the Open Source options a run through before the event; if they cause problems we'll revert to PQMagic. Concerning your server, I would move to another distro. I personally use Gentoo, but for your applications you may want to go with Debian. I like Gentoo since its so customizable, and the fact that everything is compiled from the source code speeds up the computer a fair amount. For Apache file permissions, directories should be 755 and files should be 644 as I understand it. I've always had a hard time with Samba and file permissions, so I would leave that to someone else. Apache and Samba config files can be very unique to what you are trying to accomplish with both - the only thing I can really suggest is to copy the config files onto a disk before your wipe out so you don't have to start from scratch! If you're looking to stick with Redhat (or something very similiar), you might want to look at Whitebox linux. (http://www.whiteboxlinux.org) In order to follow the GPL, Redhat provides source RPMs for all of the packages that they distribute with Redhat enterprise. Whitebox is Redhat enterprise rebuilt from those source RPMs. If you don't care if it's close to redhat or not, then you have a number of choices ahead of you. Debian is nice for a server assuming you don't want the latest and greatest. Gentoo is good if you want the latest and greatest, but don't care as much about stability and you want to get really in depth knowledge on how your system works. Mandrake and SuSE are both good choices if you're looking for systems back by companies complete with paid support when necessary.

Pete, Consider ClarkConnect Home Edition V2.1. It is a RH based (V8 I think) server that inlcudes most of the functionallity you list. Very simple install. Easy modifications once running via a web browser. Updates are simple and free over the web from ClarkConnect. A few quick notes: 1) Clark includes the option of a multi-homed ethernet firewall also, which I never install. How can one box be both securing your network and a server for everything and the kitchen sink? It is best to keep the firewall separate. 2) They offer service packages also if support is needed. I have not tried this. 3) On any server, it is best to only install/run/configure the applications and services that are needed. http://www.clarkconnect.org/info/home.current.html Also contact me off list for either further questions on the above or discussing the possibility of networking/Linux help. Setting up postfix and mailman

I've followed the instructions for setting up postfix to use both /etc/mail/aliases and /usr/local/mailman/data/aliases for alias maps. I've configured mailman so it know it's using postfix for the MTA. I've created the mailman list and another list to test. However when I try and send mail to the list, I get the following error: Mar 3 14:35:55 carnation postfix/local[6154]: C39852E25C: to=<officers(a)tkezm.org>, relay=local, delay=0, status=bounced (unknown user: "officers") Now I know that receiving and sending mail works on this box because I've tested it for local users. As far as distros go, I use gentoo (www.gentoo.org) I switched when redhat8.0 wouldn't load on a server of mine. The forums on their website are amazing, and I haven't even had a problem that somebody couldn't fix. My suggestion is gentoo. I'm still a bit of a novice myself when it comes to Apache and Samba, so I'm prob not the guy for the job. If you had a bit of time maybe, but I'm still learning. What ver of windows are your running on your laptop? And just so you know, default installs of windows are horribly insecure. There's prob an account with a blank password somewhere, or you could be running 9x and they didn't even care about security then. Yeah, your http port will prob be getting hit daily with people trying to pull funny stuff, worms trying to hurt you, etc.. Sorry I can't be of anymore help...a decent samba referece is on O'Reilly's openbooks site, www.oreilly.com/opnebook; Using Samba, 2ed. Repartitioning for Installfest

by Ryan Caron

As I mentioned in an earlier email, the Worcester Area Association for Computing Machinery will be having a Linux Installfest on March 27th. We are working under the assumption that many of the people that will attend will want to keep their Windows installations as well. Therefore, we need a nondestructive repartitioning software package. It would also be nice if we could make an image of their hard drive before we do anything so we can ensure the integrity of the data if something were to go wrong. Unfortunately, the IT departments does not have copies of Partition Magic or Ghost that we could use for the event. Does anybody have an appropriately licensed copy of the software that we could use , or know of Open Source / Freeware alternatives that are as reliable as their commercial counterparts? Does someone's place of work have such software that they would be willing for the ACM to use for the event? Is anybody aware of Open Source / Freeware alternatives that are just as reliable as these software packages (these systems will probably be using NTFS, which is much more fickle than FAT32 when it comes to these things) Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated, and the ACM welcomes the WLUG to the Installfest on the 27th. Sincerely, Ryan Caron ACM Secretary

This virus is sufficiently new that the campus mail filter didn't have the appropriate signature. I've contacted one of the people who administers it, and he's updated the signatures. No more of this virus should make it through any WPI campus mail. -- Frank Sweetser fs at wpi.edu WPI Network Engineer

Hmm... even more interesting that bitdefender (BDC/Linux-Console v7.0 (build 2492) under debian), updated a few minutes ago, doesn't seem to detect it. Fortunately, ClamAV (clamdscan / ClamAV version 0.60+BugFixesFromCVS-20030916) does after forcing an update. I think I'll update my clamav update cycle "just a bit." - Bob (Testing linux-based AV under procmail)
