Re: [Wlug] Trolling for topics for the June meeting

by frank p

Here are a few ideas I've been mulling over, some applicable for now, some for later. If I had a vote for this month, I'd say the first one would be an interesting experiment in organized anarchy ;+) -frank p ---Distro roundup:--- We could have a discussion about the strengths _and_ weaknesses of the popular distro's. My idea with this one is that your selection of a distro should be dependent on what you're looking for... stability and security vs. usability, ave-joe vs. IT / programmer, general vs. specific use (desktop vs. server) Of course there would be at least a little distro-evangelism, but as long as everyone is civil / respectable then it def would be "fun", and maybe even educational. ---Gaming / Relaxing with Linux:--- This might be good for the fall, when there's an influx of new students to the surrounding schools. We could go over some of the simple games on a default install of the common distro's / desktops. Touch on simple stuff like solitaire and also more complex like FreeCIV and even UT2k2. This would be a good lead-in to a LAN party at some point, too :+) ---How to effectively use the OpenOffice suite:--- I've personally always wanted to use it more often, but haven't taken the plunge, yet. It'd be neat to hear from a few people who use it on a regular basis and some stories about (in)compatibilities with the MS equivalent apps. ---Setting up a Content Management System for your website:--- A really nice way to setup something for non-programmers to edit web content, especially for volunteer organizations (oh yes, I'm talking from experience here). This could either be an intro to them in general with a focus / example of one in particular, or maybe a round-up of a few different ones and their strengths / weaknesses. Trolling for topics for the June meeting

by Andy Stewart

HI everybody, The summer months always make it tough to draw people to a WLUG meeting, and announcing a meeting without sufficient notice makes it worse. Thus, I'll start the monthly troll for topics now in the hope that we can nail down this month's topic and advertise the meeting so that we'll have a pretty good turnout. If you have topics on which you would like to address WLUG, please let me know. FYI: I'm fabricating the schedule for upcoming meetings. It should be posted shortly. FYI: I'm currently negotiating the time and place for the annual WLUG BBQ to be held in July. More news coming soon. Stay tuned! brad> Our school uses commercial library automation software. We would brad> like to convert the database to open source. Anyone have brad> experience doing so? My wife works at a library which has been working on switching from one DB and vendor to another for their data. It's not easy in general, though if you can get the old DB to export data in a known and stardard format (such as MARC, see another reply to this thread for details) then you're closer. You should also take a look at the Koha open source library software. It includes all the various modules you need to run a library. http://www.koha.org Also, it's not clear what you're really trying to do here. Are you trying to move from Oracle to MySQL (for example), while keeping the same commercial library automation software? Or are you looking to replace the entire software stack you're using? My experience, exporting a commercial database can be tough.. Find out if your lucky enough to have a ODBC interface or something. or try and find where the database stores it's files and try to decipher :). Keller, Tim wrote: > Nope. Nope. However, I can envision how you might go about it. No sense reinventing the wheel... When you say "open source" I'm taking a broad shot in the dark that you want to setup some sort of linux based web front end with a mysql or postgres backend? Which database are you currently using. Their are some tools available to port from MS SQL Server to MySQL or Postgres. I prefer Postgres because it has the functionality of a "real" database (referential integrety, functions, triggers, etc.) although with MySQL version 5 some of these features are being added. Both databases have nice GUI's to help with administering the database. hth, Mike > Our school uses commercial library automation software. We would like to convert > the database to open source.
