Or am I out in the weeds? Here's the MDA story. By default, fetchmail delivers (outputs) messages to your local sendmail process. You can have fetchmail do something different if you like. (For a while, I just had it deliver to a file. [Yes, I managed locking.]) For this test, I wanted to eliminate sendmail as the cause of the problem, so I told fetchmail to use "cat" as the mail delivery agent (MDA). This would output the message directly to my interactive process, which I redirect to a file. I could look at that file several ways to confirm that the color codes had been stripped. If you are using HTML to specify fonts then I don't see how the loss of them can have anything to do with 8-bit encoding, because HTML is just Ascii with extra structure. Could you be sending MIME Content-Type: multipart/alternative, with Mutt set to read the Ascii alternative? If you are trying to send DOS screen colors in the high order bytes---I don't know what to say---you aren't doing that right? I didn't understand what you meant by using 'cat' as a MDA. Unix 'cat' copies a file. Do you mean you copied a file from your local disk into fetchmail thus bypassing IMAP but using Mutt, or do you mean you copied incoming mail directly to the screen, thus bypassing Mutt but using IMAP? I'm having troubles retaining special (8 bit?) encoding in email messages from the MS Exchange server where I work. Here's the normal path of my data: MS Exchange -> MS(?) IMAP -> fetchmail -> linux sendmail -> procmail -> mutt By the time an email with color fonts gets to mutt, the color is gone. As a test, I modified my .fetchmailrc to specify "cat" as my MDA so eliminated sendmail, procmail and mutt as offenders. I've also added "pass8bits" to my .fetchmailrc -- no improvement. Thus, I've narrowed the suspects to MS IMAP and fetchmail. Does anyone have experience with this problem? Charles, Thanks, that's very interesting. Seems like they should have put the screws on the ps2 connectors instead of on the serial connectors. They're shallow plugs that come out very easily. I'm familiar with that keystroke trick with switching screens. I used to have to do that every time I started KDE until I went into the power management section, checked the box for Enable display power management, and then set Standby, Suspend and Power off to disabled. Now, I only have to do the key trick when I start mplayer. Greg Charles R. I use my mouse left-handed, and it never occurred to me to switch the buttons. Just switch your fingers. I just went into kde control center (suse 8.2), and there's a choice for left-handed mouse. After trying it with the buttons reversed, I retract my initial suggestion and recommend that you get it to work the way you're used to. Maybe a USB to PS2 adapter plug would do the trick. I'm using the one that came with my new mouse. Can anyone tell me if there's an advantage to plugging the mouse or the keyboard into usb rather than ps2? USB mouse - left handed ?

OK, I found a discussion about uninterruptible sleep, and I'm sure the problem is with the usb flash device. It did the same thing in the new installation. Killing my bash shell and logging in again allowed me to unmount the device. I think I might have toasted it a few days ago when I accidentally unplugged the ps2 mouse instead of the usb. It's got a bunch of files with unintelligible names on it now, so I guess I'll try formatting it again. Are they in 'D' or 'Z' state? Does "dmesg" show any kernel errors?

Thanks. The root partition (including /tmp) is only 80% full. I know I've had it higher than that in the past with no problems. invincible processes

I just had some strange stuff happen to my SuSE 8.2 installation - it's stalling when I try to copy files and run some programs. If I try to kill the process, it doesn't go away (kill -9 pid, as root), and the machine won't shut down because stuff is still running. This coincidentally happened the same day that I started to prepare a replacement hard drive, so it's not on a critical installation (in fact, it's going to be wiped), but I'd still like to know what's going on. Note that I totally disconnected this drive when I was installing on the new one, just to make sure I didn't do anything to hurt it. Any ideas on what this could be or where to look would be appreciated. Greg

Yea but open office draw doesn't have the flowchart "stencils," which means I'd have to create all the basic flowchart types myself. Xfig kinda falls under the same category. I'm really looking for something that does flowcharting out of the box and I've yet to find it. This is one of the few things that keeps me rebooting into my windows partition. Yea, I ended up following the loop-aes and it work beautifully. The only problem is that the mount it root:root and can't be changed. However I was able to create a directory that is owned by my user and use that directory underneath just fine. It's actually really neat to have and was easier than I thought with Fedora Core 2. What about looking at /proc/scsi/scsi? You can probably parse out the Vendor/Model to decide what ID you are. That is just off the top of my head tho. [OT] Introduction

Hi all. I wanted to quickly introduce myself. I just recently subscribed to the list and wanted to do a bit more than lurk. I hope to make a LUG meeting in the near future also. I don't want to waste too much bandwidth so I'll keep this short. If anyone is going up to the Ottawa Linux Symposium this month, maybe we can catch up and make some introductions, for everyone else, I look forward to meeting you all the LUG meeting. As I side note, I read the archives and wanted to second the idea for a "distro debate" LUG meeting. I think that would be really interesting to see what everyone runs and why.
