I am assuming that everyone has heard of Windows XP "Media Center Edition". Although this is a great idea, it comes with a price. I am proposing using all open-source applications and OS to build the same functions (video, audio, and photo). I wasn't thinking quite so formal a process. Fir example if there are others in the world with old PCs looking to install Linux on, an install fest is a good way to get them installed and a quick primer. The other part would be just kind of showing, on personal machines maybe what a particular distro really works well for someone. As far as CDs, I'd be happy to make a bunch of CDs if we need them. Also, if you install the personal edition, and you point to the Suse ftp site for updates, it will allow you to install the packages from the pro version. I know that I have read somewhere that Fedora or Redhat is not a good distribution for beginners. That could have been true in the past.....but Fedora core 1, 2 and even 3test1 along with Redhat V3 WS have evolved a lot lately. I have gotten a lot going on my boxes with little initial knowledge and a lot of documentations. Therefore, I would recommend using a Redhat based OS. It will make it easier to transition to other Redhat-based Linux like Mandrake, Asianux and such. Thus giving you more play room and easier growth. Sonny Nguyen

Definitly going to pitch choices; after all, that's what linux and Free Software is all about. I'm prob going to go with OpenOffice, seeing as how that's what I'm comfortable with (and I know its capabilities). Def looking for a graphic install (at least to start off with), I don't want to scare people away. As far as KDE v. Gnome, I'm not quite sure. I'm not big on the newest version of MetaCity, and I just installed KDE 3.2.3 on a new box and it looks / feels awesome. I'm probably going to lean more towards KDE but show gnome as well. Also covering Firefox, Gaim, and gnuCash. I'm trying to do an intro to computers class with linux. Don't know how it's going to work out but its worth a shot. I've done a Stage3 with GRP (all you do is the kernel with stage3, and GRP is precompilied Oo.O, KDE, gnome). It's quick, it works, but I prefer to use Stage1 and distcc for speed. I like the fact that I can rip kerberos support out, etc. I'm gonna d/l SuSe and Slackware tonight, see what I can see. If you want a good beginners distro, go with Gentoo (though it still has a little learning curve for installation and setup) or get one of the distro's that does more for you like Fedora Core 2 (which I'm running and like a lot), Mandrake or Suse. They make much better beginner friendly distro's. Remember, you want to make the switchover easier on users, otherwise they won't make it.
