I would suspect the motherboard, they tend to go bad most often. You can try lowering the memory speed in the BIOS setup too. memtest hangs

I'm testing some DDR ram (one pc2100 and one pc2700) in a dell 4500s (1.8GHz Intel) and memtest hangs on the second test - Address Test, Own Address, No Cache. I've tested the sticks together and separately, and the same thing happens. The test just stops after a minute or two, with no error messages and loss of keyboard control. Tested one stick in a different computer, and it tests fine. It's a brand new memory chip. The Dell seems to run slower than I'd expect for a 1.8GHz with 384MB RAM. I especially noticed it when I was installing software from source packages - it went a lot slower than on my 1.2GHz Athlon with 500MB of pc133. Other than that, it seems to run ok. Here are my questions: Is it obviously the cpu? Is there any linux software that will test the cpu similar to what memtest does with memory? Any suggestions for diagnosing this problem? Thanks, Greg

There was a period of history where it was pretty difficult to set up correctly but it has been pretty solid for the last couple of years. On the other hand, if you want conversion to something your printer (whichever one you pick) will actually print, remote printing, printer pools, print job scheduling, and many other modern pieces of functionality... CUPS is probably something you want to look into... And I'd recommend it to the original poster. LPRng is not that bad for a print server. In the ECE dept at WPI, we use LPRng beause CUPS IMHO is still rather buggy. We've tried switching over to CUPS on many occasions however have always ran into a bug that prevents us from performing the switch over. We've also used CUPS on our other servers to connet to the printer server running LPRng and have run into some troubles with that, which we have not using LPRng. Don, I would recommend not using LPRng. It is too old. I understand that CUPS seems difficult, but once you understand it, it is the next best thing. In my office, I have setup my kickstart to install 300+ printers on all of my Redhat Linux V3 Workstation machines (100+). You can configure it via console, applet, or even web. Fedora and Redhat has gone that route and I believe that others have too. It is much better than LPRng can every be. printers

Hello there, I am new here, and new to Linux. My company is in the middle of a platform migration for our Oracle ERP system. We are moving away from Solaris towards a Intel/Linux solution. I've got a quick question about printers. Is there a printers.conf file in Red Hat like there is in Solaris (I couldn't find one). Here's my issue: I have 5 servers in a 9i RAC array and I don't want to set up my 50 printers on each server. Can anyone suggest a way to "copy" the printers I set up on one server to the other 4? I could get into this type of meeting. In fact, watching the time it takes to do a Gentoo install vs say Knoppix is prat of the fun. I can also provide some Yellow Dog Linux 3.0.1 Cds for anyone interested in trying to run Linux on a PPC. I'd like to see how Fedora Core install is progressing these days. I have SUSE 9.1 Pro sitting here that I'd also like to see run, if anyone has some guts and a machine. :) I can even see about bringing along a PC that can use a new install. Also, can the gentoo build work via distcc? I'm wondering if we can leech some cycles opff idle laptops to speed the Gentoo build up. how far into the gentoo install can you get? Is the last step the long process? I can volunteer a fast machine if we could get most of the way thru at the meeting and I can just kill it at the end. Or is every step along the way very time consuming? For Linux use, I would recommend the 2200 over the 960 hands down, if you can use Gimp-Print 5.0 (which is currently in beta). I have both of them. I consider myself qualified on this subject, as the Gimp-Print project lead. These printers are not the same; the 2200 uses UltraChrome inks (which are pigment-based) while the 960 uses conventional dye-based inks. Somewhat surprisingly, the 2200 has a wider gamut than the 960 (usually pigment inks have narrow gamut). However, it's not hard to get a good grayscale out of that printer. The 960, despite its tiny smallest drop size of 2 pl (vs. 4 pl for the 2200) does not produce as good output in my opinion. You really need to use the highest resolution (2880x1440) to get smooth texture, since printing with the 960 requires use of a lot of black ink. The 2200 has a "light black" (gray) ink that helps a lot, and in my experience you can get quite good quality even at 720 DPI and seldom need to go above 1440x720 DPI. There's a big performance difference right there! The problem with the 2200 is that Gimp-Print 4.2 doesn't drive it well, since the internal architecture doesn't cope very well with the fact that the gray (and photo black) inks aren't neutral. Running approx $9.95@ mailorder. A full box of 50 sheets 8.5x11 glossy paper (~$23 from Amazon) seems to use up a full ink set, maybe a little more depending on coverage. You'd think that roll paper might be cheaper, but I haven't found that to be the case. (Maybe supply and demand at work here.) I'm on my 3rd box of paper since January. Also, generic printing in less that "High Quality Photo" mode seems to much less ink. -Peter

In Search for Unix / Linux Career

Folks, I need some help here. I am a Linux / Unix newbie and I am wondering how I can painlessly (although I realize that i must put in a lot of hard work) get a carrer in the Unix / Linux world. I am a CCNA, MCSE, CCSA, N+ and A+ and I am comfortable in the networking field. I am comfortable with the Cisco IOS, Checkpoint as well as the microsoft shit. But after realizing that Microsoft is not my very friendly area, I am leaning towards going into the Linux / Unix world. Where should I start? I dont want to spend time going to school and I am confortable with self study. What certifications would you recommend and what books do I need? Thanks, John
