Internet service for newbies

This is in regards to the install fest that will be happening Saturday at the Worcester Computer Coop. These machines will be given to people with little computer experience / money. All they need for an Internet service is a very simple dial up. Has anyone tried Net zero for Lindows(linspire) and got it running under Linux? If not can someone recommend a good ISP. I just wanted to give a quick thanks to the folks that helped me diagnose my hardware issues a week or two ago. I took the advice of a few people, picked up an ATX power supply tester at New Egg ($12 shipped) and found out that my power supply was toast. I looked into RMAing it (and the case) back to New Egg but found a better (450W vs 400W) supply for a little less than what it would cost to send the old one back to New Egg via FedEx. After getting it installed and fired up, everything seems to be working fine. Again, I just wanted to say thanks to all that helped/offered advice. SuSE Watcher

Hi All, I just installed SuSE Server version 9 (my first SuSE installation) and I'd like to use the "Watcher" to get updates automatically, but I can't figure out what the "autorization" window wants. I know it's looking for a username/password pair, but what username/password?? I don't recall creating one, other than the usual 'root' and various users. Is there a "special" username & password that I should've created? Thanks, Chuck

Another thing I just thought of is to check the seperation rollers. They are little blue rollers that make sure you only get one sheet at a time. They should have ridges on them (like treads on a tire) they almost look like veins. If it is relatively smooth, there's your problem. Once should do the trick. There are pickup rollers / d rollers, get a damp cloth (water) and wipe it down...process takes not even a minute. (The only rollers you have to get are the ones that pickup the paper) Also unplug printer first. Portmapper using incorrect ports - how to prevent?

After suffering a power outage, I noticed spamassassin wouldn't start. I'd get: # /etc/init.d/spamassassin restart Restarting SpamAssassin Mail Filter Daemon: No spamd found running; none killed. Could not create INET socket: Address already in use IO::Socket::INET: Address already in use After a bit of checking my configuration, and googling for spamassassin problems, I tried: # lsof -i :783 COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME ypserv 1025 root 5u IPv4 2855 TCP *:spamd (LISTEN) Apparently ypserv grabbed the spamassassin tcp port 783 before spamd started. I fixed the problem by re-arranging the startup sequences in /etc/rc5.d and restarting everything: # lsof -i | egrep "(ypserv|spamd)" spamd 10626 spamd 5u IPv4 44885 TCP localhost:spamd (LISTEN) ypserv 10641 root 4u IPv4 45184 UDP *:643 ypserv 10641 root 5u IPv4 45244 TCP *:646 (LISTEN) I'm wondering if there's a better fix? I've dealt with HP laserjets experiencing the same problem... they sell a kit to replace the rollers and it's fixed the problem for me 3 out of 3 times. They run around $80. USB -> Parellel

Hi, all... I inherited a HP Laserjet 1100 from work, recently. (This model's failure mode is that you have to feed it one page at a time, since if you put multiple sheets in the tray, it will grab anywhere from 5 to 20 at a time.) Anywho, it's a nice sweet printer, especially for the price. I'm using it at work with my WinXP box. However, I'd like to bring it home to use with my laptop. It has a parallel interface, and my slick, modern laptop is lacking this. (And I really don't feel like kicking up my 486 each time I want to print something!) Does anyone have any experience with one of those USB to parallel converter dealies? They seem pretty cheap, but I wonder about driver support and whatnot. (Either 3:2, 7:5, or 5:4 are the most common, for 4x6, 7x5, or 8x10 prints.) You can rotate and scale the printed region, but the aspect ratio stays locked, so that no matter what you do, you don't get any letterboxing on your printed photo. I don't know if that's what y'all were talking about, but that's what I need more than anything. -Chuck

Proxy closes connection

Hi All, I am using openssh on cygwin along with ssh-tunnel (a pearl script that uses IO and IO::Select) to tunnel through a firewall in order to gain access to my desktop at home. I have noticed that recently the behavior has changed and my connection is broken after 3 seconds of inactivity. How do I, a) find out what is causing the connection to be broken and/or b) keep the connection alive. As long as I am actively feeding commands at the shell prompt the connection stays alive.
