SuSE Watcher

Hi All, I just installed SuSE Server version 9 (my first SuSE installation) and I'd like to use the "Watcher" to get updates automatically, but I can't figure out what the "autorization" window wants. I know it's looking for a username/password pair, but what username/password?? I don't recall creating one, other than the usual 'root' and various users. Is there a "special" username & password that I should've created? Thanks, Chuck

(I don't think there were more than a couple of machines which were this slow). The event will take place from noon - 4 PM. I'll update the WLUG website shortly with directions and such. I'm looking for volunteers who will be able to attend and who wish to burn a few Knoppix V3.6 CDs. Please contact me before your burn anything or we'll likely end up with way too many CDs. The room where this event will be held is a pretty good size. There will be ample opportunity for unnamed WLUG members to trip on power cords and pull them out mid-installation. :-) Many folks have asked when we'd be having our next install fest - well, this is it! Another thing I just thought of is to check the seperation rollers. They are little blue rollers that make sure you only get one sheet at a time. They should have ridges on them (like treads on a tire) they almost look like veins. If it is relatively smooth, there's your problem. Once should do the trick. There are pickup rollers / d rollers, get a damp cloth (water) and wipe it down...process takes not even a minute. (The only rollers you have to get are the ones that pickup the paper) Also unplug printer first. Portmapper using incorrect ports - how to prevent?

After suffering a power outage, I noticed spamassassin wouldn't start. I'd get: # /etc/init.d/spamassassin restart Restarting SpamAssassin Mail Filter Daemon: No spamd found running; none killed. Could not create INET socket: Address already in use IO::Socket::INET: Address already in use After a bit of checking my configuration, and googling for spamassassin problems, I tried: # lsof -i :783 COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME ypserv 1025 root 5u IPv4 2855 TCP *:spamd (LISTEN) Apparently ypserv grabbed the spamassassin tcp port 783 before spamd started. I fixed the problem by re-arranging the startup sequences in /etc/rc5.d and restarting everything: # lsof -i | egrep "(ypserv|spamd)" spamd 10626 spamd 5u IPv4 44885 TCP localhost:spamd (LISTEN) ypserv 10641 root 4u IPv4 45184 UDP *:643 ypserv 10641 root 5u IPv4 45244 TCP *:646 (LISTEN) I'm wondering if there's a better fix? Is there a way to restrict which ports are used by portmapper? Should I simply change portmap and dependent services to start later/last in the init sequence? - Bob

I've dealt with HP laserjets experiencing the same problem... they sell a kit to replace the rollers and it's fixed the problem for me 3 out of 3 times. They run around $80. USB -> Parellel

Hi, all... I inherited a HP Laserjet 1100 from work, recently. (This model's failure mode is that you have to feed it one page at a time, since if you put multiple sheets in the tray, it will grab anywhere from 5 to 20 at a time.) Anywho, it's a nice sweet printer, especially for the price. I'm using it at work with my WinXP box. However, I'd like to bring it home to use with my laptop. It has a parallel interface, and my slick, modern laptop is lacking this. (And I really don't feel like kicking up my 486 each time I want to print something!) Does anyone have any experience with one of those USB to parallel converter dealies? They seem pretty cheap, but I wonder about driver support and whatnot. Have you ever used one of those Kodak/Fuji Photo Maker dealies in WalMart? That's totally what I want. Basically the tool locks the aspect ratio to what can be photo printed. (Either 3:2, 7:5, or 5:4 are the most common, for 4x6, 7x5, or 8x10 prints.) You can rotate and scale the printed region, but the aspect ratio stays locked, so that no matter what you do, you don't get any letterboxing on your printed photo. I don't know if that's what y'all were talking about, but that's what I need more than anything. -Chuck

Proxy closes connection

I have noticed that recently the behavior has changed and my connection is broken after 3 seconds of inactivity. How do I, a) find out what is causing the connection to be broken and/or b) keep the connection alive. As long as I am actively feeding commands at the shell prompt the connection stays alive. WLUG Group event: Sat Oct 9th in Worcester

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI everybody, I was recently contacted by Patrick Sawyer, who represents the Worcester Computer Co-op (http://www.worcestercoop.org) He asked me if we would be interested in getting Linux installed on some computers, as well as building up some working computers out of existing parts. I thought this would be a great group event. This event will be on Saturday, October 9th, from noon to 4 PM (http://www.worcestercoop.org/directions.html) This location is 1.6 miles from WPI. It should be accessible via the File...Print menu from Gimp. It shows a rather rough thumbnail image within boarders to give you a feel for where the image will be printed. This is actually something folks have been requesting, but we (Gimp-Print project) don't have anyone to implement. The plugin really needs to be rewritten anyway, since it's such a mess, but that's another matter. Printing Photos - cropping in gimp 2.0

Hi All, Thanks for the input I recieved here, I've bought an Epson R300 color printer for making photos. Once I figured out that the debian package for libcupsys has the permissions borked for the files in /usr/lib/cups/backend so that they aren't executable, all is well. I've been happily browsing images in 'gqview', then loading them into gimp 2.0, then printing them. But I'm having issues with scaling images. I have to guess how/where to crop the images so that I can get the maximum amount of the picture onto the paper. It's a real pain, with lots of back and forth. Is there a tool out there, or a gimp plugin, which allows me to take a picture, select a paper size and gives me a template to crop/scale the image to fit that paper size nicely? Any hints on what tools/packages I should be looking at for this type of work? For example, I've got a picture of my nephew and son which I wanted to print out. I also wanted to zoom in a bit (or crop the image down to get closer to them) so that when it printed, I maximized the use of the 4x6 stock. A real pain in gimp 2.0, but since I'm just using the standard Debian install, maybe there is a plugin to help with this? Thanks, John
