I would recommend getting a Small Business server Dell PowerEdge 400SC instead. Those are Hyperthreading Pentium 4's, they work with Linux (you can get it preinstalled if you like) and you are not paying any MS-tax. In addition, they have an AGP slot (unadvertised) so you can use them as a nice Linux desktop if you want. Dell has deals every once in a while for these systems in the range of $300-400 in their minimum configurations. Check slickdeals.net for the coupon codes.

cheap Compaq at Staples

by Bill Mills-Curran

Staples has a low-priced machine advertised in the Globe: $199.94 for a Compaq Presario with an AMD Sempron processor. Any idea how this might work with Linux? I picked up a cheap Compaq at Walmart a year ago, and I returned it because it was such a dog. TIA, Bill

We shall be meeting not in the Access Grid room (aka the usual place), but in Olin Hall room 107. Olin Hall is across campus from where we normally meet. We have had a few meetings there in the past. Please excuse the slightly off-topic comment from this AMD fan-boy... But *if* Sun gains any traction selling these machines the stock could appeciate nicely...maybe even spectacularly. Yea, I installed KDE. Just to test the system compiling, we did various -jXX to see what would happen. At -j100 to gcc the system load avg was about 50, however the system was as responsive as if there was no load average, it was awesome. Printing problems

by Don Peterson

Hi All, I am having trouble when printing big batches of documents, these are over 20 pages. Everything starts off fine, but then printing stops usually around page 18 to page 22. If I reprint the batch a different number of pages will print, but never all of them. Like I said I usually get anywhere between 18 to 22 pages. I've noticed if I restart the lpd service I can get the batch to reprint fully once. But then when the next batch prints I start having trouble again. Does anyone know if there is a spool limit with lpd? I know you are going to say use CUPS, but I don't want to mess around with my production servers if I don't have to. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanx, Don

Most of the support for PCI-X is relegated to the specific platform support areas. For example I use PowerPC 74xx processors on Marvell bridges and it works. You might need to do some research on your specific combinations, but being x86 based you'll probably have support. I can't say I've tested any Nvidea cards though so I can be of limited success. Thanks Brian

PCI-X under Linux

by Carlton C. Stedman II

I was just wondering if anyone had any success using PCI-X/PCI-Express cards under linux. I was looking through the kernel and don't see any specific settings strictly for PCI-X bus. I wonder if they *just work* with PCI support enabled, as AGP does. I'm specifically interested if anyone has got hardware 3D acceleration working with a PCI-X video card. I'm looking at getting a mid-range NVidia card, since their drivers are at least useable under linux, compared to the atrocious performance and glitches the ATI proprietary drivers have (and the open drivers being worked on are not overly worried with the card I have, and the R300 driver doesn't have any sort of 3D acceleration right now). As far as I can understand from the docs on nvidia's website, it seems like it'll just work, but was interested if anyone had any success. In particular I'm looking at the nvidia 6600gt series. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks. CCS -- Carlton C. Stedman II, sageman(a)wpi.edu "To iterate is human, to recurse, divine." -- L. Peter Deutch

Any help with this would be much appreciated. > > Chuck HI Chuck, I am using an Orinoco Silver wireless card with SuSE 9.1 on my laptop. I am using WEP, so I hope my comments will be helpful even though my card is not the same as yours. First, is it feasible to temporarily turn off WEP on the card and on the home network and make your card work with your network that way? This will insure that you have the proper kernel modules installed, the card isn't broken, etc. Note that the range of this card is IMHO rather poor, so stay close to the wireless access point. When you configure the card via YaST, you should see your config info in the /etc/sysconfig/network directory. For my system, the file is ifcfg-wlan-bus-pcmcia. In that file, note that WIRELESS_KEY_n (0<=n<=3) should be equal to the null string for disabled WEP. I also have STARTMODE='hotplug' to ease my life. The WIRELESS_MODE is 'Ad-hoc'. There should be a value for WIRELESS_ESSID specific to your network. If that works (and please let me know if it does), then I was able to enable WEP by the following settings: WIRELESS_KEY_0="A1B2C3D4E5" where you would put the 5 hex bytes of your key between the double quotes. For some reason, I have WIRELESS_KEY_LENGTH='128', but 5 hex bytes is only 40 bits, so go figure. I did have a WPC11 card at one time, and I could not get > 40 bit WEP to work at all. I don't know if this is (was) a 'feature' of the WPC11, some limitation of Linux, or my own ineptitude. - -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFBmVP2Hl0iXDssISsRAn6AAJ9lqNApXvHYtA4527Qep67ui02fkACfTh6m QK/YCIBHRc5VsSZ1tlFViY0= =fsBv -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

REMINDER: WLUG Meeting - Thursday!

by Andy Stewart

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi Everyone, We'll be having our next WLUG meeting on Thursday, November 11th at 7:00 PM in the usual place. Chuck Anderson is going to talk to us rather informally (a la the Gentoo meeting) about what is new and different in Fedora Core 3. He'll also have a PC or two for a live demo. Coming in December: Our guest speaker at the December 15th meeting will be Jon 'maddog' Hall. If you never come to another WLUG meeting, be sure you make it to this meeting! maddog is a fantastic speaker that you don't want to miss. He has spoken at several WLUG meetings in the past and the feedback has been universally positive. Please see the WLUG website for more details about maddog's talk. Starting in January 2005: It looks like our meeting location will be used for a class on Wednesday evening. It may be possible for us to find another location on campus for our Wednesday meetings. Another possibility is to have occasional meetings on Monday evening. Right now, we alternate between Wednesday and Thursday evening. I know that if we changed to Mon/Thurs meeting nights, some folks would like it and others would not. There's really no way to make everybody happy here, except perhaps to find another campus location for Wednesday evening meetings. Stay tuned...nothing is definite yet. SSH stops working?

by Skip Gaede

Hi Folks, I have both Linux and WXP on my home machine and do remote maintenance on a Linux gateway. The linux gateway is configured for doing IPSEC as well as SSH. Some time in the past few months, SSH has ceased to work between both WXP and Linux on my system and the remote gateway. I have not changed anything on either end, as far as I can remember. What's strange is that I can setup an IPSEC tunnel to the gateway, and do SSH to the gateway from the local subnet (my IPSEC IP is 168.192.1.128 and I can SSH to 192.168.1.1). If anyone has any suggestions on how to debug this, I'm all ears. Thanks, Skip
