Installing ubuntu on a mac..

So funny enough another Mac fell into my lap and our success with Matt's mac encouraged me to get U22.04 installed on a 2014 macbook pro.. I tried to install using Ventoy only to hit this issue: https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy/issues/52 I ended up writing the ISO directly to my scratch stick and installing from there. Lab bench giveaway

Ron, I hope you find the videos helpful! I think they summarize the issue better than I ever could. Jon, I look forward to seeing your write-up on this issue! I think a lot of the responses I've seen so far are understandable -- Red Hat has an image of being a pioneer in open source development, and closing up source code publication to anyone who isn't a customer is unprecedented and seemingly comes in direct conflict with Red Hat's goals. This is such a controversial development that there's an ongoing Wikipedia discussion on whether RHEL is even considered open-source or is violating the GPL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux#RfC_about_the_s… That being said, I think the community at large may be having a knee-jerk reaction to this news, which isn't helped at all by Red Hat's fairly poor PR handling. We might just need time to come to an understanding. My wife's work in Worcester has two buildings on either side of Salisbury ave and at one point they used a point to point link between them since they couldn't get a cost effective solution using wires. Now I will say that using wires and running a trench would be a great solution if you can do it. I would follow the Ars article, they do a good job (when they do them) on giving you various pros/cons of solutions. I use TP-Link EAP-225 wireless APs both at home and at my church and they do a good job. But the real key is to just get antennas which focus the signal where you want it. Most APs try for symetrical singal to cover an area, which isn't what you want. The next step is to do some judicious tree trimming to keep a good line of sight, and ideally putting it high enough so that people and objects don't get in the way and disrupt things. Good luck! I read the article and while I disagree on the advantage of 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz (because of the absorption of 2.4GHz by the water in the leaves of the trees) I had a thought about where your outbuilding gets its power. Do the power lines run from your house, and if they do why not try Ethernet-over-power? I had originally used Powerline unites to bridge Ethernet from one end of my house to the other instead of running Cat. You just have to make sure that there are no transformers in the way, that it is a straight piece of copper wire from your circuit box to the outbuilding. Hi, I have been writing up a response to this that goes much deeper into the discussion than most articles I have read have done. Because I have been busy doing other things (Board Chair of the Linux Professional Institute, defending the Linux Trademark AGAIN, doing virtual presentations and preparing for a long trip to Latin America) I have not had time to finish it, but I should be able to finish it this weekend. I have given drafts to other LPI board members, many of whom have been in the FOSS space almost as long as I have and some have been in the computer space....no...few people have been in that space as long as I have. So far the comments have been good, some saying it was "great". When it is finished I will post it to the LPI blog (free for everyone to read) and let you guys know. Thoughts or experience with long range (350ft) wifi

Hello W-luggers — I have an out-building where I’d like to have wifi. The distance is about 350ft. There are some trees in the way, but not a thick forest. I’m curious to know if anyone here has recommendations on outdoor, long range wifi equipment. Perhaps something with a parabolic antenna or otherwise directional antenna. Awesome meeting last night!

Hey Gang, We had an amazing meeting last night, I'd like to thank Kevin from Technocopia for providing us the space, we will be back!! We had a number of random interlopers just show up and the discussion quickly pivoted from keyboards to linux drivers and the unix philosophy. The conversation then shifted to analog control devices and a guy named Rick gave us all a great education on analog process and control technologies. Then to cap things off, a maker named Matt showed up with an iMac and asked if we could help him get Linux Mint installed, in classic WLUG fashion we jumped at the opportunity and in no time flat we got him sorted out. It turns out that machine is slightly too old to run DeVinci Resolve, but I believe it'll be a great machine for him to get some basic linux knowledge. I believe we've found a new space to hold meetings, it's going to get interesting and weird! I would like to also suggest Technocopia! http://technocopia.org/ We would love to have the WLUG, and the only reason i haven't attended in a while is because Thursday at 7 is our open house night. I would take responsibility for "booking" the space, as a member I am allowed to host club event's in the space with non-menbers so long as I am there to let everyone in and close up on the way out. I still may not be able to attend every meeting, as I give tours of Technocopia, I do look forward to finally being able to at least pop in and out between tours! Hi Tim, I think the issue with WPI has been inconsistent room bookings, especially in May due to the number of large events taking place. Now that those are over it should be relatively* easy to get a recurring reservation in for one of the campus center meeting rooms on a monthly basis. Happy to work with the events office and see what'll work. I can finagle most any night except Wednesdays. Thursday is easiest here. So a vote to stay Thursdays. I will second the vote for closer to Worcester or South. Leominster requires 50+ minutes of farm lands tour each way and logistics to leave earlier. Leaving earlier is harder with sport after school pickup and other commitments.
