Kevin, Thanks much for the info. I don't usually bring a laptop, but figure it's a nice option. Good to know that you have such good battery support. Re: WLUG Meeting next week! July 13th 2023.. Tentative topic is keyboards, RedHat.

by Jon "maddog" Hall

Hello, Re: Red Hat and IBM Several weeks ago IBM and Red Hat announced a change to their business licenses for RHEL. Several pundits wrote their opinions about these changes. I carefully read most of them, but I felt some concepts were missing. So I took my time and wrote my thoughts on it. I wrote to you in the middle of writing this article that I would share it with you when it was finished. I will warn you that the article is long. Very long. It is not the article of the TicTok generation, or even the Instagram generation. It is not an article for the faint of heart, but I think it does give a lot of insight into the development of software as an industry, binary-only code and why it happened, Open Source and Free Software. I have shared this with several people who, like me, have been around a "long time", and now I share it with you. Don't look for finger wagging here. Customers will decide what direction they want to go. https://www.lpi.org/blog/2023/07/30/ibm-red-hat-and-free-software-an-old-ma… Regards, md On Thu, Jul 6, 2023 at 1:22 PM Tim Keller via WLUG <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> wrote: > While not entirely linux related, keyboard preference is something that we > all have opinions on. > I'll bring along a couple interesting keyboards that play nicely with > linux. > > I know we'll definitely talk about the the RedHat decision as well. Installing ubuntu on a mac..

So funny enough another Mac fell into my lap and our success with Matt's mac encouraged me to get U22.04 installed on a 2014 macbook pro.. I tried to install using Ventoy only to hit this issue: https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy/issues/52 I ended up writing the ISO directly to my scratch stick and installing from there. Just a heads up if you end up tripping on this. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Re: Red Hat controversy

by Joshua Stone

Ron, I hope you find the videos helpful! I think they summarize the issue better than I ever could. Jon, I look forward to seeing your write-up on this issue! I think a lot of the responses I've seen so far are understandable -- Red Hat has an image of being a pioneer in open source development, and closing up source code publication to anyone who isn't a customer is unprecedented and seemingly comes in direct conflict with Red Hat's goals. This is such a controversial development that there's an ongoing Wikipedia discussion on whether RHEL is even considered open-source or is violating the GPL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux#RfC_about_the_s… That being said, I think the community at large may be having a knee-jerk reaction to this news, which isn't helped at all by Red Hat's fairly poor PR handling. We might just need time to come to an understanding. Red Hat is continuing to contribute engineering resources and infrastructure hosting to open source projects as usual, but it'll be shifting focus toward CentOS Stream development instead of facilitating the proliferation of RHEL clones that inevitably end up directly competing with RHEL. - Josh On Fri, Jul 21, 2023 at 12:29 PM Jon "maddog" Hall < jon.maddog.hall(a)gmail.com> wrote: > Hi, > > I have been writing up a response to this that goes much deeper into the > discussion than most articles I have read have done. My wife's work in Worcester has two buildings on either side of Salisbury ave and at one point they used a point to point link between them since they couldn't get a cost effective solution using wires. Now I will say that using wires and running a trench would be a great solution if you can do it. It might also be part of the solution, maybe where you trench ffrom either end to a location with better line of sight. > The following article ( > https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/08/point-to-point-wi-fi-bridging-betwe… > ) recommends some TP-Link wifi routers, which is likely the route I’ll try. > Any one willing to share thoughts or experiences would helpful. I would follow the Ars article, they do a good job (when they do them) on giving you various pros/cons of solutions. I use TP-Link EAP-225 wireless APs both at home and at my church and they do a good job. But the real key is to just get antennas which focus the signal where you want it. Most APs try for symetrical singal to cover an area, which isn't what you want. The next step is to do some judicious tree trimming to keep a good line of sight, and ideally putting it high enough so that people and objects don't get in the way and disrupt things. Good luck! Re: Thoughts or experience with long range (350ft) wifi

by Jon "maddog" Hall

I read the article and while I disagree on the advantage of 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz (because of the absorption of 2.4GHz by the water in the leaves of the trees) I had a thought about where your outbuilding gets its power. Do the power lines run from your house, and if they do why not try Ethernet-over-power? I had originally used Powerline unites to bridge Ethernet from one end of my house to the other instead of running Cat. You just have to make sure that there are no transformers in the way, that it is a straight piece of copper wire from your circuit box to the outbuilding. You should get 1-2 Gbit/second out of it. https://www.amazon.com/Powerline-Computer-Network-Adapters/b?ie=UTF8&node=1… md On Fri, Jul 21, 2023 at 10:47 AM Bradley Noyes via WLUG <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> wrote: > Hello W-luggers — I have an out-building where I’d like to have wifi. Awesome meeting last night!

by Tim Keller

Hey Gang, We had an amazing meeting last night, I'd like to thank Kevin from Technocopia for providing us the space, we will be back!! We had a number of random interlopers just show up and the discussion quickly pivoted from keyboards to linux drivers and the unix philosophy. The conversation then shifted to analog control devices and a guy named Rick gave us all a great education on analog process and control technologies. Then to cap things off, a maker named Matt showed up with an iMac and asked if we could help him get Linux Mint installed, in classic WLUG fashion we jumped at the opportunity and in no time flat we got him sorted out. It turns out that machine is slightly too old to run DeVinci Resolve, but I believe it'll be a great machine for him to get some basic linux knowledge. I believe we've found a new space to hold meetings, it's going to get interesting and weird! Re: Where to hold meetings..

I would like to also suggest Technocopia! http://technocopia.org/ We would love to have the WLUG, and the only reason i haven't attended in a while is because Thursday at 7 is our open house night. I would take responsibility for "booking" the space, as a member I am allowed to host club event's in the space with non-menbers so long as I am there to let everyone in and close up on the way out. I still may not be able to attend every meeting, as I give tours of Technocopia, I do look forward to finally being able to at least pop in and out between tours!
