On a similar note, how does one change the default mail client from Evolution to Kmail? I am using Firefox 1.0.1 as the default browser. The reason I want it to change over is because I have synced my palm to Kontact and want to use Kmail as the mail client, so I can share the contacts lis. Opera - tie-ins to thunderbird

Hi Everyone, Last question for awhile. I swear. Anyway, has anyone had luck configuring Opera to use an alternate mail client than the native M2? I am trying to get it to call Thunderbird but I've had mixed results. Hi everyone, I 'm contemplating installing the new Sun Looking Glass 3D desktop on Fedora Core 3. Has anyone had any experience doing this? The instructions located at https://lg3d-core.dev.java.net/lg3d-getting-started.html seem pretty straight forward but I was wondering if there were any gotcha's. You can only upgrade SLES9 if you have the upgrade key from SuSE Themselves I recommend downloading SUSE 9.2 DVD or FTP install if this is only for a personal use OS ~Tom "Hi All, I just installed the SuSE SLES 9 (kernel 2.6.5-7.97). I have this set up to run automatically every day at 5:00AM, but it fails with an error message "Unable to check for updates". If I run the YOU GUI by hand, a box pops up asking for authentication data (a username and password). During the installation of the O/S, it actually ran YOU successfully and downloaded some updates. I've looked at the /etc/sysconfig/onlineupdate file and I can't see anything obviously wrong. There is a password file in /var/lib/YaST2/you. Have you configured yum at all? I think the http://fedorafaq.org wesite has a good yum.conf file that you can just apply to your system. I was able to find many packages through yum with this config. There is also a way to install apt on redhat/fedora, which adds the deps checking automatically. Unsuccessful installation of gDesklets

by Ken Jones

You've piqued my interest in gDesklets. I am trying to install it with no success. I am running Fedora Core 3. The README warns me not to attempt to compile this package, but it offers me no alternative. I downloaded, unzipped and tar'd gDesklets-0.34.2.tar.bz2. I ran the configure file. It failed for lack of pygtk-2.0. (see below) I downloaded, unzipped and tar'd pygtk-2.4.1.tar.bz2. This successfully compiled and installed. I even helped by modifying and exporting environmental PKG_CONFIG_PATH But still gDesklets did not. Any ideas? -----snip of command [kjones@kjones-fedora gDesklets-0.34.2]$ ./configure . . checking for pygtk-2.0 >= 2.4.0 pyorbit-2 >= 2.0.1 gnome-python-2.0 >= 2.6.0... Package pygtk-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `pygtk-2.0.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable No package 'pygtk-2.0' found configure: error: Library requirements (pygtk-2.0 >= 2.4.0 pyorbit-2 >= 2.0.1 gnome-python-2.0 >= 2.6.0) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them. --------------------- I successfully installed pgytk-2.4.1. Problem starting gdesklets on login

by Andrew Robert

Good morning everyone, I recently installed gdesklets on FC3 and it works fine except it does not start automatically on login. I've tried saving the gnome session but the gdesklets are not captured. I've also tried automatinng the start by adding the call to my .bash_profile file but that doesn't do the trick either. Does anyone know how to overcome this issue? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. -- Thank you, Andrew Robert Systems Architect Information Technologies - OpenVMS Massachusetts Financial Services Phone: (617) 954-5882 Pager: (781) 945-1742 E-mail: arobert(a)mfs.com

It's a great tool which works wonders, but can be a pain to get going right sometimes. Of course, that's all the various protocols fault, not fetchmails. John

Surely you log in as just "foobar", no? You have to have gotten through the domain name system and be connected to a definite port on a definite IP address before you even get the login prompt. > Fetchmail allows you to specify the > username of foobar to which it adds @mail.domain.com. > This fails because the login account doesn't include > "mail.". The POP server knows who you are because you tell it USER <name>. The RFC (rfc 1939) doesn't say much about how you spell your name, but in my experience it's just the part before the "@". If the server has mail for you, it should give it to you, no matter what the name or alias of the machine that accepted it from the SMTP server. To get mail for me (kwright on this machine) from mail.speakeasy.net (kawright on that machine, which belongs to the ISP), I put the following in .fetchmailrc. It does not matter if that mail came to me via speakeasy.net or an alias like free-comp-shop.com. skip spk via mail.speakeasy.net protocol pop3 username "kawright" password "****", is "kwright" here limit 20000 The "skip" means it is not automatic, I have to ask for it by name. I do this because I have accounts on more than one machine and like to control which one I fetch from. Thus: /usr/bin/fetchmail -v gis spk -- Keith

Turns out that ther verbose information shows that it is sending the appropriate information despite what the prompt shows. It also now succeeds so I must need to wait a little bit after creating the email account through the web administration. Thanks for the help. (Should have checked for a verbose option myself.) Nope. I'm not talking about one account that collects a bunch of emails and dropping them in the appropriate mailbox. The POP3 server is mail.domain.com. The login account is foobar(a)domain.com. Fetchmail allows you to specify the username of foobar to which it adds @mail.domain.com. This fails because the login account doesn't include "mail.". (Or at least that is my read of the document they provide for grabbing the email.) So I want to stop or change what it adds to the username. Dennis Payne dulsi(a)identicalsoftware.com
