REMINDER: Upcoming meeting

This meeting is open to anybody with an interest in Linux. I'm still looking for a speaker for this meeting. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact me ASAP. If we don't have a speaker, we'll have to find a way to amuse ourselves. :-) Volunteer speakers get free food after the meeting. I recently received a large package from the Netherlands. It contains 100 Ubuntu Linux CD sets (version 4.10 from November 2004) to give away. Bring home 5 - 10 of them for your friends - I'm not kidding! Check out http://www.ubuntulinux.org for more information. Each set contains 2 CDs - one is a live eval CD similar to Knoppix, while the other one is used to install Ubuntu on your system. Feel free to stop in just to get some CDs (but I hope you'll stay for the meeting!). Ubuntu is Debian based with Gnome as the default desktop. Hi, First a hearty thank you to all that replied to my conundrum. Here is how I got past the problem of my (FreeBSD 5.3 Release) OpenSSH's "sshd" key errors, not loading at startup: 1) I had an incorrect line in /etc/rc.conf. One problem for me was an incorrect path to the program. The correct lines that mattered were: sshd_program=/usr/sbin/sshd sshd_enable="YES" 2) I also did not have correct keys generated for the sshd aplication. Based upon your helpful e-mails and the man pages I found the following worked just fine to create the SSHV2 dsa host key: ssh-keygen -t dsa -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key 3) Also, based upon recommendations I turned off DNS lookup by my sshd server in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file. UseDNS no All is well here and my adventure helps someone else some day. Correcting these problems got my Putty and WinSCP connections down to around 2-3 seconds (from around 80-90 seconds). Joel, The sshd conf looks fine to my eye, but I'd try and bump up the loglevel in there and restart the daemon completely. Then look in the log file on startup and see what it says. It might give more details. Unfortunately, I'm leaving for the weekend soon, so I won't be able to help much for a while... Good luck! John

A OpenSSH question.

Hi, I am running into a problem trying to setup OpenSSH 3.6.1 on FreeBSD 5.3 release. I am connecting via clients (both ssh on BSD and WinSCP on Windows). When I test the server with "sshd -ddd", I get an error back from the server which reads: debug3: Not a RSA1 key file /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key I have tried creating the above server key many times with no apparent luck. The clients connect to the server but the connect time is way over 60 seconds so I am bummed out. I have looked on the OpenSSH site and googled for it but have not found a workable solution. Communication between "HiTech" and anyone not in the club.

WLUG members: There is one HiTech issue about which I am passionate and frustrated. It is the lack of understanding in the Fitchburg Public School District of the management efficiencies that are now "best practices"in the commercial world. I am sure that the Fitchburg case is typical of most Massachusetts public school districts. Our School Committee beats up on the Superintendent over the cost of multiple Administrators. No one sees that this cost could be contained if improvements were to be made in the architecture of their internal network, the structures of their data bases and the training of their administrators. Part of the problem is that the voting public does not understand either. This is perfect opportunity for the commercial LINUX community to garner some very good press. If Red Hat, for example, were to team with the Fitchburg Public School District to implement places where LINUX is a better answer than M$, it could get general media coverage as well as Education publication notice. My observation is that little trust worthy technical information passes between HiTech and those who manage our public schools. I would like to work at bridging that communication gap. It's actually really neat and incredibly easy to use. I'm in the process of refinining it a bit now and if anyone is interested in it, I'd be more than happy to send it your way. It uses snmp to query the pages from the printer so it actually determines the number of pages printer and not just how many should have printed. So you have a network printer that can report that kind of thing. I guess I'm used to thinking of cheap, dumb inkjet printers. Since there seems to be a decent bit of interest in this script, I'll post when my release version 0.2 today. For anyone who is interested check out http://gforge.maxslack.com/projects/cupsacct/. It's my personal project site and I have put up the first release. I'll be releasing the files here so it's the best way to get them. Not all the components of the project site are working yet (mostly web based CVS) but you can download the release tarball if you are interested. Also note that this script is still heavily modified for specific use in the ECE databases. I'm working on changing it so that it will be more universal and include sql to create the database and tables. Short of rebuilding the kernel without the usb-storage support... Isn't there a script that runs vmware? Can't you just put the rmmod command in there? Permanently unloading the usb-storage kernel module under FC3

Hi Everyone, I have a 160G NTFS partitioned USB external disk drive that I would like to use in my VMware instance. I tried to get VMware to recognize the drive but it failed to do so because the Linux USB driver had it locked. Removing and re-attaching the drive did not release the driver lock. What resolved the problem was to unload the usb-storage kernel module using the command: /sbin/rmmod usb-storage This works great but the module reappears the next time I boot the beast. Does anyone know of a way to make this permanently go away? Any help you can provide on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Andy

Topic idea

Is there any interest in a linux fundamentals talk? It seems like I am the noobi'est member of the lug and don't want to bore everyone, but a discussion around basic installs (partitioning, swap size, boot loaders, etc), upgrades (apt, yum, emerge), application installs (rpm's, source) and kernel patching and upgrades would be a good nights discussion.
