Are you talking about on the Windows side, or the Linux side?? The one virus that you should be concerned with on the Linux side is a particularly insideous virus called the "Good Times" virus. This has been around since the early 90s and can target any e-mail system. It continues its resurgence despite repeated efforts to put it down. You can find out more about it and how to protect against it at: http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/notes/Notes09.shtml or google Goodtimes virus. Consider this my public service for the year. Hi All, I just installed a caching DNS server at work on a SuSE 9.2 server. It works great. My question is how can I view the contents of the cache? I've "googled" around and looked at the HOWTO docs, but no joy. Thanks, -Chuck

RE: [Wlug] New problem! FC3 install

by Jerome Walczak

I edited the boot prompt to go into runlevel 3 then edited the xorg.conf file with NoAccel after the information for the video card. Turns out it was the card that was causing the problems - the information for the monitor was fine. The card's an Intel 810 and there are refresh rate issues between it & Fedora apparently. So the systems up and running and looking very pretty BUT I'm still having that issue with the network card & editing the tulip driver doesn't seem to be working - is there a way to get another driver in there? i say you boot normally and hit ctl-alt-f2 to get to the "other" console. Then edit xorg.conf by hand, or do the system-config-xfree86 as suggested. Editing grub is a good idea too, but ctl-alt-f2 is good to know too. --- "Chuck R. New problem! FC3 install

by Jerome Walczak

Jared & everyone - thanks for all your help & advice, I'm going to try Ubuntu I think if I can't get FC 3 to work out. The problem I'm having now is with the FC 3 install. I burned the four cd's and upgraded my old box & everything went fine, a bit slow but fine (install took about an hour). Now I boot up for the first time and as soon as it hits kudzu and checks for newly installed equipment the monitor goes to vertical colored lines. I read that this can be fixed by editing the xorg.conf (or something like that) file & setting everything to defaults & that the issue is basically with the monitor being set at too high a resolution but how do I do that? Anger Is A Gift. -----Original Message----- From: Jared Greenwald [mailto:greenwaldjared@gmail.com] Sent: Saturday, April 23, 2005 2:43 AM To: Jerome Walczak Subject: Re: [Wlug] FW: MN-130? That depends on how you characterize "easier to work with"... If you mean - easier to install - you might want to try ubuntu linux (http://ubuntulinux.org) If you mean - easier package management - you might want Gentoo. I have to say that I'm rather biased towards Gentoo - purely because I used it in most of my systems that don't have to be Redhat/Fedora/Suse. (I work for a major software house and our main product is supported on the various Redhat and Suse streams so I have to have some systems running those OSes.) All of my home network servers, and both my home and office desktops are both Gentoo (I'm also currently building a mythtv box - http://mythtv.org - and that's Gentoo also). The biggest thing with Gentoo is that you compile everything - so when a new version of KDE comes out - you compile the whole thing - but you don't actually sit there and run make. The thing that I like the most is that the package management is really good. Everything is designed to pull the source kits (and any patches) directly from the project webpage for a given project. You just tell the install tools that you want to install or upgrade a package and it figures out all of the appropriate dependencies for your system (depending on what you already have installed and some configuration params) then it starts downloading source and building things automagically. Also, since you are building the system up from scratch (there is no gui installer or anything - all command-line) you get to decide exactly what is on your system and exactly how it gets setup. There's about 100 core packages (including kernel source, system logger, cron, etc...) but that doesn't include X or any of those things - which is nice for server installations. I've found that the Fedora installer hides too much for installing servers - for desktops its not really all that clear either. Ubuntu hides everything, but you go into it knowing that and it actually figures out what type of installation its doing (laptop/desktop). I had that on my laptop for a while and it ran really well - there's not much package selection there - its more a pre-canned set of binaries depending on your system type (it even knew to download the gnome battery applet for monitoring my laptop battery). So, now that I've sufficiently confused you... did that help at all? Keep in mind that I wrote this at 2:45A - so it might be a little incoherent and rambling... SRPMS are source code. You don't need them unless you are going to develop Fedora. You need the 4 i386 .iso files, or you can get just the boot.iso and do a HTTP or FTP install off the internet.

Not just yet. I'm in the process of downloading & burning some cd's which (hopefully) will allow me to upgrade the current installation - I'm going to try to go from FC 1 to FC 3 - the cd's I burnt before didn't boot & didn't work ... If the new version doesn't work or I can't get it to install right I'll swap out the MN card for another one I have spare ... Can anyone give me a quick explanation of why the SRPMS cd's didn't boot? Uses the prism 2 chipset, or maybe just prism, but either way its a standard (to myknowledge) chipset found on linksys cards. So under normal circumstances you should be able to use the tulip module to get this to work. But of course microsoft had to go in and put in their 2 cents and screw it up for everyone. RE: [Wlug] FW: MN-130?

by Jerome Walczak

The kernel I have installed is 2.4 --- I'm currently downloading version 3 off the site & expect everything to be ready to burn in about, oh 3 hours or so. We'll see if it works. Or ... Is there any way to install a new kernel in Fedora 1? Forgive me if I'm not saying that right but that's what I think is possible? -----Original Message----- From: wlug-bounces(a)mail.wlug.org [mailto:wlug-bounces@mail.wlug.org] On Behalf Of Jared Greenwald Sent: Thursday, April 21, 2005 11:23 PM To: Worcester Linux Users Group Subject: Re: [Wlug] FW: MN-130? I would imagine that a newer release of Linux might have it. I don't even remember if Fedora 1 was in the 2.6 kernel stream... -Jared On 4/21/05, Jerome Walczak <vze4jtbs(a)verizon.net> wrote: > > > OK here we go - I'm a Linux newbie &'ve used Mandrake in the > past occasionally but that's about it. FW: MN-130?

by Jerome Walczak

OK here we go - I'm a Linux newbie &'ve used Mandrake in the past occasionally but that's about it. I've installed Fedora 1 on an old computer at work but it has an MN-130 network card & the system isn't recognizing that it's there. According to a couple articles I've checked I need to edit the Tulip driver (tulip_core.c) & add a line of code at line 201. I did this and then checked the dependencies & typed modules_install & restarted the system & STILL the network card didn't show up. What am I doing wrong? Does anyone have any advice to get me out of this frustration? I'm very close to swapping out the card for another one that's more likely to work but I'd like to avoid that if possible ... Can anybody help? -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.0.308 / Virus Database: 266.9.15 - Release Date: 4/16/2005

We covered kernel compiling, initrd, kernel modules, and grub/lilo as it pertains to pointing to the kernel image to boot. There was a discussion on frame buffers as well. I thought the meeting went well. I also gave away quite a few Ubuntu Linux CDs which were recently sent to me. I have many more left, so if you want some for yourself and/or your friends, let me know! If you came to the meeting and couldn't find us, I apologize. We moved to a different room at the very last minute due to a scheduling conflict. This new room worked out pretty well since there weren't that many of us, although we do like the Access Grid room much better due to its amenities and size. :-) Later, Andy - -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA, USA http://www.wlug.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.5 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFCZyTRHl0iXDssISsRAo14AJ4tLExjqSjKk6OamXOs9adyLAI2gwCfUt24 pYjRNk+qgS+YtBglkHJBpE4= =oE/f -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
