Partition Question

Hi all, I have a bunch of linux boxes that have the swap partitions that are not of type swap. They are type linux. The OS seems to be swapping just fine on this partition type. Some machines have swap partition that look like this from fdisk /dev/hda6 50810 52890 1048792+ 82 Linux swap Other machines have swap partitions that look like this. /dev/hda6 50810 52890 1048792+ 83 Linux Does anyone have experience with why it would or wouldn't cause issues? Does anyone know what it means to have a partition of type x or y? Is there a difference or is having a partition type mostly there for humans. I would have thought that the partition just defined the limits. Everything else depends on what you do with the partition as far as formatting and defining inodes/FATs and labels... Any ideas? I'm currently running Gentoo for AMD64 on a dual Opteron system. Everything works fine, and I'm really happy with it. I have been able to run binaries compiled on 32-bit x86 systems without any problems so far. It sounds like you need to do some cross-compiling for 32-bit x86. I've never done that, so I can't say how well that would work, but if you have the "cross" and "multilib" USE flags, you should have all of the components you need to do that. I have also run 32-bit Slackware on the Opteron box, and that worked fine. So if you don't want to deal with the AMD64 and cross-compiling issues, you could just install a 32-bit Linux distro on it with no performance hit. Keep in mind that there aren't anywhere near as many Gentoo packages in Portage that are marked stable for AMD64 as there are for x86, so that may be a problem for you if you can't live without some specific package. There are other possible issues if you intend to use your AMD64 box as a desktop system. For example, Flash doesn't seem to work on AMD64 yet, and I don't think you can play WMV files, even with the 32-bit libraries. AMD64 and 32-bit apps

Recently I've begun considering migrating over to the amd64 platform (my motherboard just died on my athlon xp system, much to my chagrin) and figure this is a good place to ask for users experiences. I'm not worried about my video card drivers, since NVIDIA has great amd64 support, at least, so I'm told. My main concern is that I need to install some 32-bit emulation libraries and kernel modules, so I've read, to compile 32-bit apps, and that some compiled 32-bit apps will only work under a 32-bit environment, requiring me to setup a seperate environment to chroot into. I'm running gentoo and I'm up to the task, just wondering if anyone has any experience in this specifically and anything I should be concerned about or not to worry too much about. SOHO LAN & Multiuser Desktops

I'm successfully using NIS+NFS for a small SOHO LAN serving 4 desktops, a server and printer, plus associated networking. I'm wondering, though, if there's an easier approach to configuring a "Windows replacement" multi-user setup. I do have printing, file sharing and "roaming profiles" working fine, but it's a bit cumbersome so far. Is anyone working with an approach that might be simpler... particularly one well integrated into an existing desktop distribution? - Bob

gnome-terminal/mutt question & solution

Ok, this is going to read more like a detective novel... :-) I'm using mutt in a gnome-terminal on fedora core 3, and I'm up to date (within a week) with updates. I find that, with the defaults, the terminal does not refresh when it needs to. A ctrl-L repaints the window just fine. I did (just now!) find a fix... Right clicking on the terminal -> Input methods and select "X input method"... Everything works fine, except this setting is not persistent. The setting affects all gnome terminals and new ones opened. However, if I first close all terminals and start a new one, the setting is lost. So, how to make the fix stick? I have no idea, but I did find this info on the subject: http://www.webservertalk.com/archive204-2004-9-379265.html This gives a link to a new terminfo file which you can use to fix the problem, and a nice way to install it without editing the distro-supplied file. Thus far it works fine. Bill

I just wanted to apologize for spamming the list (by spamming the list) with my attempt at humor ... I was just thinking about e-mail viruses, and I felt nostalgic about a time where e-mail viruses were a joke that could never happen because, quite simply (with exception of those people who used emacs) our mail reader was just a mail reader ... a method to display text on a text console. Some days I miss that. Other days, I just revel in gmail and get over it. So yeah, sorry 'bout that. I hope that at least three of you saw the humor ... Are you talking about on the Windows side, or the Linux side?? The one virus that you should be concerned with on the Linux side is a particularly insideous virus called the "Good Times" virus. This has been around since the early 90s and can target any e-mail system. It continues its resurgence despite repeated efforts to put it down. Fedora 1 - Realtek card (swapped out the MN-130) - dualboot with Win ME - and working like a charm:) It's so much faster cleaner and better than the old Windows that I wish I could get rid of Win entirely but I know if I do somebody'll complain so it stays. Now - what're good security measures for a public internet terminal (which is basically what it is)? I already have the firewall set at a high level, but what should I do beyond that? I edited the boot prompt to go into runlevel 3 then edited the xorg.conf file with NoAccel after the information for the video card. Turns out it was the card that was causing the problems - the information for the monitor was fine. The card's an Intel 810 and there are refresh rate issues between it & Fedora apparently. So the systems up and running and looking very pretty BUT I'm still having that issue with the network card & editing the tulip driver doesn't seem to be working - is there a way to get another driver in there? i say you boot normally and hit ctl-alt-f2 to get to the "other" console. Then edit xorg.conf by hand, or do the system-config-xfree86 as suggested. First you have to disable the graphical bootup, and boot into runlevel 3 which disables the gdm graphical login screen: At the bootup menu, hit any key to stop the auto-boot. New problem! FC3 install

Jared & everyone - thanks for all your help & advice, I'm going to try Ubuntu I think if I can't get FC 3 to work out. The problem I'm having now is with the FC 3 install. I burned the four cd's and upgraded my old box & everything went fine, a bit slow but fine (install took about an hour). Now I boot up for the first time and as soon as it hits kudzu and checks for newly installed equipment the monitor goes to vertical colored lines. I read that this can be fixed by editing the xorg.conf (or something like that) file & setting everything to defaults & that the issue is basically with the monitor being set at too high a resolution but how do I do that? I have to say that I'm rather biased towards Gentoo - purely because I used it in most of my systems that don't have to be Redhat/Fedora/Suse. (I work for a major software house and our main product is supported on the various Redhat and Suse streams so I have to have some systems running those OSes.) All of my home network servers, and both my home and office desktops are both Gentoo (I'm also currently building a mythtv box - http://mythtv.org - and that's Gentoo also). The biggest thing with Gentoo is that you compile everything - so when a new version of KDE comes out - you compile the whole thing - but you don't actually sit there and run make. The thing that I like the most is that the package management is really good. Everything is designed to pull the source kits (and any patches) directly from the project webpage for a given project. You just tell the install tools that you want to install or upgrade a package and it figures out all of the appropriate dependencies for your system (depending on what you already have installed and some configuration params) then it starts downloading source and building things automagically. Also, since you are building the system up from scratch (there is no gui installer or anything - all command-line) you get to decide exactly what is on your system and exactly how it gets setup. There's about 100 core packages (including kernel source, system logger, cron, etc...) but that doesn't include X or any of those things - which is nice for server installations. I've found that the Fedora installer hides too much for installing servers - for desktops its not really all that clear either. Ubuntu hides everything, but you go into it knowing that and it actually figures out what type of installation its doing (laptop/desktop). I had that on my laptop for a while and it ran really well - there's not much package selection there - its more a pre-canned set of binaries depending on your system type (it even knew to download the gnome battery applet for monitoring my laptop battery). So, now that I've sufficiently confused you... did that help at all? Keep in mind that I wrote this at 2:45A - so it might be a little incoherent and rambling... SRPMS are source code. You don't need them unless you are going to develop Fedora. You need the 4 i386 .iso files, or you can get just the boot.iso and do a HTTP or FTP install off the internet.
